SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE SATUEDAY, January 18th, 1896. (Cardiff Account Day: Jan. 30th). The principal feature to-day was the large lemand for Barry Stock. Quite a number tf parcels of the New Preference Stock changed hands at prices ranging from 1 to 1%, and deals were also reported in the Preferred at 124% and the Deferred at 140%. The former quotation fractionally advanced, while the Undivided moved up one point. Rhymney Ordinary declined one point, and was inquired for at 250, with rollers at 254. Another feature of the day was the itrength displayed in Bute Dry Dock Shares. No business in them was reported, but there were buyers in the market, and he quotations advanced two points. It appears that a large number of the commer- cial. community who are anxious to become holders have waited for some time to buy, And have now apparently reached con- fiction that value has touched bottom. The new manager commences his duties en Monday, and things generally are now in a j,uore settled state. Hill's Dry Dock Shares inctionally improved. The Mining Market opened dull and remained so until the afternoon, when a better tone was displayed. Chartereds rose to 3% bid. There is believed atill to be a large uncovered bear account in these shares. In fact it is an open secret that the call has been partly due to large bear sales. In spite of low quotations there is a very arm undertone, and large operators appear wishful to cover their commitments before the arrival of Mr Rhodes in this country. It is anticipated that when Mr Rhodes does -arrive some announcements will be made which will, it is said, put a different face upon the late sensational crisis. The quotations showed the following variations :—Rise—Barry Undivided Stock 1, to 264-266 in do. Preferred Ordinary, y2, to 124%—125% Rhymney Iron New 6d, to 12s 6d—13s 6d Bute Dry Dock 2, to 56-58; Hill's Dry Dock to 834—894. I Fall-Rhymney Ordinary 1, to 253-257. The following business was reported :— Barry Preferred Ordinary, 124%. Barry Deferred Ordinary, 140%. Barry New Preference, 1%, 1%, 1%, 1%, IB, 1X. There are sellers of Vale of Glamorgan Shares, at 9 Barry Deferred Stock do. Preferred Ordinary Cardiff Ice Shares Bland's Shares Cambrian Collieries Deben- tures, at 5 premium s.s. The Union Dry Docks, Limited, was registered on January 13th, with a capital I of £ 150,000, in 210 shares, to adopt a certain agreement, and to acquire, develop, turn to account, and work certain land, dock, engineering, and ship-repairing works and premises, situate at Newport (Mon.), Sharpness (Glos.), and Barry Dock (Glam.). LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Saturday. The Money Market retains its easy appearance, with every probability of continuing to do so for an indefinite period. There is a superabundance of cash, and the prospect of further additions being made, though the gradual dispersion of the Japanese funds renders the market very cautious. In loans scarcely anything has been doing the nominal charge for advances was per cent., but with the difficulty of employing money so great borrowers practically fixed cheir own terms. In the matter of discounts not many bills were available, and the competition for them was rather keen. For three months' Bank bills the charge was 1 to 1 per cent. four months. 1 ys and six months, 1% to 1 Trade bills Three months, 1 y, four months, 1% and six months, 1%. Very quiet markets have prevailed on the Stock Exchange to-day. There has been no special feature in the market, and the restriction of dealings has had the usual effect of causing a weak tendency to prevail, but with no special influence at work the movements have been slight, and the under- tone of the markets must be described as good. Consols rose A, and closed at 107% to 107% for delivery and account 2% per Cent. (Childers), 104% to 105% do. 2% per Cent., i04 to 104%. Local Loans I Stock, 109 to 110%. I' Foreign Bonds have been very quiet, the closing of the German Bourses further restricting the limited amount of business doing. The changes were few and mostly unimportant, but Internationals were generalfy steady. Spanish recovered 34, and closed at 60. and Italian were better. Turks and Egyptian were firm, the former rising to 1, and the latter to 7f. Hungarian, Russian, and Greeks were steady, and occasionally 34 to up. Home Railways, though quiet, were firm. Great Eastern was strong on the extremely favourable report, which shows an increase in gross revenue of 2157,817, whilst the increase in expenditure is only E17,557, the percentage of working expenses to receipts being 54'29, against 57'20 per cent. last year. In addition to paying the addi- tional 1% per cent, dividend-4 per cent., against 234 per cent.—the company have added £ 18,000 to the contingent fund. The stock rose and closed at 93. The Scotch stocks were again strengthened by the favour- abfenew3 from the strike districts. Caledonian Deferred rose to 55, and North British Deferred was better, at 47%. Bombay and Calcutta Transfers, Is 2d Yokohama, 2s l/gd Singapore Four Months, 2s lrid. Rupee Paper, 61% to 61 The Hannan's Sir John Forrest Mine seems likely to be one of the richest and most successful on the famous Hannan's Field, in the very heart of which the pro- perty is situated. The latest report from the manager states that a number of the most experienced mining men in the neighbourhood have been to look at the property, and the unanimous opinion appears to be that it will turn out infinitely richer than was ever anticipated. The Australian shareholders are said to be refusing £2 each for their shares, and in the London Market several thousands of shares have been quietly picked up by those in the know, by which operation weak holders have been cleared out, and a substantial rise appaars to be imminent. Indeed, from all that we hear there is no reason whatever why the shares of this very moderately- capitalised company should not go to S2 or 23 very soon, as have many similar under- takings with no better properties and much larger capittls.-ilfining World, Jan. 18th. The important developments on the New Chums (Bendigo) property have combined to give these shares something of their old buoyancy. That they should only stand at 10. to lis when payable stone is being mined at the preseni moment is surprising, especially bearing ill mind that last summer the shares were a strong market at 17s. The opinion seems to be that results will in the near future carry quotations to a much higher level than any yet reached, ol which the 2s advance during the last few days may be taken as an earnest.—Mining World, January 18. 7940

LONDON MINING MARKET.
LONDON MINING MARKET. Saturday Night. Dalziel'a Agency saysFor a Saturday the markets were not more dull than usual, yet as regards tho Kaffir division prices are mostly down. Matters are still in an unsettied condi- tion since confidence is by no means restored. The gold ontpnt from the Rand for December was not so bad as had been expected, but fears are general that the figur for January will be decidedly worse, and although we can duly regard this as a temporary matter, the most will be made of it by those influential people who an still heads of llund shares. Communication being to a great extent stoppsd between Johannesburg and London, it is not quite possible to say what is really happening, but we gather from private sources that one effect of the recent troubles is a total upset in regard to native labour. Most of the bciys come from British territory—Swazis, Bechuanana*, or what not-and as they have no interest whatever cosmopolitans or Boers run the Transvaal. To say nothiua: of their hating the Boer Govsrniucnt, they have, to a great extent, retired to their kraals and there await a more settled order of things. From this ib will be seen that the January output will be feeble. But it may be asked whether whatever the result may be they have not been anticipated and discounted as regards prices. So far as the changes go in Kaffir Shares there is really little to record. If Knights are quoted lower, and Rand Mines and Durban Roodepoort are rather stronger, other shares are marked down, although I only to a fraction. In the meantime the revenue returns from the mines are not so bad as they might have been, bub we have a suspicion that the figures are a good deal estimated. Dealing with the entire list, there is. indeed, very little to note. Crown Reef and Bantjes have recovered 1/4, but in others, although the move- ment is it, nearly every case downwards, the differences do not exceed I/s. Rand Mines being quoted at better. In Land and Exploration Shares there is really no change at all, but quotations are a trifle off, as in Potchefstroom and Bechuanas. But whatever changes may be made in quotation they indicate nothing beyond an easing off in the business done. Diamonds are also lower, De Beers being down and Jagersfontein those prices, however, being rather nominal. In other departments there is nothing worth notice doing. Tintos are fractionally lower, as also Johannesburg Consolidated, but the amount of business transacted afforded no real test as to whether the market was strong or weak. Though the tone as regards Kaffirs is for the mombnb feeble, Australian descriptions continue firm. but the changes during the day being merely fractional there is no call for further remark.

LONDON, Saturday.—Though not exactly an overdue, the arrival of the barque Nereus at Maaslius is worthy of note. She left Iquique on October 2nd, with a cargo of nitrate, for Ham- burg, and after a quick passage to the Channel, .collided with and sunk, on January 6th, off the Galloper lightship, the steamer Ciacar, bound from Hamburg for Vigo. The Nereus was severely damaged, and was abandoned by her crew, ultimately drifting ashore near Noordwyk. Previous to her abandonment she had been taken in tow by the steamer Harwich, which had to cast her off owing to stormy weather. Eventually she was towed off by a salvage steamer and brought safely into Msaslius. The Morgengry, which left Montrose on August 23rd for Freemantle, and upon which a few small orders had been accepted at lOgs, is to-day reported as arrived, after a very long passage of five months. Very little, if anything, has been done with other risks, which are stationary at late figures.
