LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Tuesday. Money was again very short and wanted, and borrowers had to pay 2 up to 3 per cent. for advances over the night, whilst tdl the loans due at the Bank were re- newed. The Discount Market remained firm, and brokers would not take fine three months' bills below 2* per cent. On the Stock Exchange fresh business was much restricted, partly owing to the approaching settlement, which begins on Saturday next in Mining Shares, and markets as a rule were without much feature. American Railroad Stocks opened generally dull, President McKinley's Mes- sage, though up to the expectations which had been formed regarding it, having to a. large extent been already discounted. The tone, however, became strong at the finish in respop..se to better opening prices from Wall-street. The chief feature was a sharp drop in Union Pacifics on the statement that the Government had been authorised to bid for the Kansas and Pacific Railroad. Home Railways were generally well sup- ported, the attention of operators being chiefly directed to the Underground lines in expectation of early electric traction. Grand Trunk lines gave way on realisations. Mexican Railway Stocks again advanced considerably during the early hours, but relapsed towards the finish on sales to take profits. L Foreign Bonds were generally weak in the absence of Continental support. Mining Shares were generally neglected, both South Africans and West Australians having a few fractional losses on the day. Tho market for Home Government Securities was dull, and Consols receded -fe, to 112%, for money, and 11378 for the account. Rupee Paper receded Colonial Inscribed Stocks were firm. A CHURCH THIEF CAUGHT. PRAYING BEFORE THE ALTAR. A well-known character named S. Cambridge was at Wednesbury on Tuesday charged with breaking into St. James's Church. Recently many robberies have been committed in churches, and prisoner, who has already suffered five years for sacrilege, was seen entering the church. A policeman found him in the act of prayer before the altar, but in his possession he found several articles which had been removed from the vestry. The rifkgistrates remanded the prisoner to enable the police to get further information.
HIGH HATS IN CHURCH.
HIGH HATS IN CHURCH. Irritating as is the matinee hat is in theatres, it need not, one would think, be a rock of offence in churches, where people may be supposed to go to hear rather than to see. Nevertheless, the Kev. C O Johnston, of the Bathurst-street Methodist Church, Toronto, Canada, has started a campaigu against the wearing by ladies of high and expansive hats. These hats," he says, with their mountain-high feathers, go bobbing mercilessly about. The unfortunate man who sits behind keeps his head going back and forth to keep in line with the speaker, and when he leaves the service he is as tired as if he had done a hard day's work."
A BLACKPOOL ELOPEMENT.
A BLACKPOOL ELOPEMENT. A man hailing from Manchester took lodging at Blackpool during the season. He was married, and had a wife and family living at Salford. An intimacy sprang up between himself and the lady where he lodged, and during the temporary absence of the husband the pair eloped. They had with them sufficient furniture to start house- keeping under new conditions. The truants were traced to Fleetwood, then to Belfast, and ulti mately to Liverpool, where they were appre- hended by Detective Park, and handed over to the Blackpool police.
MIDLAND IRON TRADE REVIVAL.
MIDLAND IRON TRADE REVIVAL. The revival in Midland pig iron continues, and prices are increasingly strong. The improvement is particularly gratifying since it is coming not from sheet iron makers, but makers of merchant iroa. These are always the greatest consumers of pigs, and their orders are always much more important than the sheet iron makers, the con- sumption per mill being fully double. Prospects afford expectation of continued advance. Derby- shire foundry pigs have risen to 483 6d, forge hematites to 58s and 60s, and foundry do. 61s 6d to 62s 6d.

__----_-----" A BAD YEAR."
A BAD YEAR." FROM THE UNDERTAKER'S STANDPOINT. The Undertakers' Revit10 is now in its Decem- ber number, and, mindful of the fact, it reviews the year from the mortuary standpoint. It has been a bad year. Business has gone on the even tenour of its disappointing way." There was but occasional demand for most of us, and that demand chiefly of an unremunerative order." The mortality tables, indeed, "responded generously in August to the heat wave," but the last return to hand comes a few short of the average of the past ten years. The result on the fortunes of the trade is just what might have been expected—" no new features," and a tendency iu funerals, as in politics, to reaction." Our own explanation of this is that the hope of further Liberal successes at the polls has given the population a new lease of life. The florists, as usual. set the lion's share of THE PROFITS OF LUNEKAL POMP. Flowers are of no use to undertakers, 41 nor have we yet heard," says our contemporary severely, of the benefit which they confer either upon the departed or the bereaved." The same thing might perhaps be said of plumes and velvet trap- pings, but in the circumstances it would be ungenerous to say it. Plumettes have shown a slight tendency to revival," but that little has never been much." We are not sur- prised to hear it, as there are no miracles in mathematics. Graves are at about the same price, and coffins are still of elm or of oak, mostly polished, and trimmed with brass furni- ture, too often simulated by the wretched German dipped-brass plate stuff." In short, it is not so much the review as the funeral sermon of the year. We would gladly echo our contemporary's wish of a merry Christmas to all," but for a disquieting uncertainty as to the significance attached to the words.-D.-tily News.
FATHER IGNATIUS.
FATHER IGNATIUS. SCENE IN A PARISH CHURCH. The Central News says:—There was a scene of some excitement at the parish church of Bishopsgate on Tuesday, when a protest was made to the rector, the Bishop of Marlborough, against Father Ignatius officiating there. The building was thronged at the time, and much confusion and some hissing occurred as the protest was tendered. The Bishop over- ruled the protest, and said he would apply for the Bishop of London's sanction.

ANOTHER WORK OF A POPULAR CHARACTER BY AN EXPERIENCED AND FAVOURITE WRITER^ A STORY OF LOVE MYSTERY .INTRIGUE. WE ARE NOW PUBLISHING IN THE CARDIFF TIMES AND gOUTH -^Y^ES-^EEKLY-EWa THE OPENING CHAPTERS OF A. SENSATIONAL AND DRAMATIC WORK FROM THE PEN OF MISS DORA JJUSSELL, -i.N-. -iLJ' .J-t; The Author of more than a Score of Very Well. known Novels, including:- "FOOTPRINTS IN THE SNOW," "THE BROKEN SEAL," A BITTER BIRTHRIGHT," "A GREAT TEMPTATION," "A FATAL PAST," "THE LAST SIGNAL," THE DRIFT OF FATE, &c., &c.. Miss RUSSELL is an old ami long-triea avourite with newspaper readers, and we believe our New Story from her Pen will receive as cordial a welcome as its predecessors. It is of a Typical and Interesting Character, and is entitled:— A T ORN QUT pAGE." OUTLINE OF OPENING CHAPTERS OF "A TORN-OUT PAGE." The story opens at a country ball, where the central characters became acquainted with each other. George Fairfax, who has just succeeded to his uncle's baronetcy and estates, is introduced to Admiral Dundas, the late baronet's intimate friend, and to his daughter Isabel, who impresses George very favourably. When Isabel returns home she is speedily confronted with the shadows of the past by the perusal of a short note, in which the writer demands an interview, and threatens unpleasant revelations if this is denied. To anticipate a little, it may be said that Isabel is of semi-Spanish origin. When six- teen years of age she was inveigled into a marriage with Pedro Lopez, a scapegrace, who quickly deserted her for a woman more suited to his amorous propensities. Admiral Dundas had always been taken for a bachelor until he settled down in England and announced Isabel to be his motherless daughter. In the meantime fickle Dame Fortune treated Pedro Lopez rather sum. marily, and that ardent swain left his beloved sunny land to seek hush money from his wife. Hence the note which awakens a train of painful memories in the young lady's mind. Isabel is naturally of a frank and honest disposition, but she now resorts to secret meetings, and adopts various expedients for raising the money necessary to silence her unscrupulous husband. Sir George Fairfax pays marked attentions to her, and she is goaded to despair by her impotence. Her husband's demands become more and more intolerable, and in a fit of recklessness she resolves to kill him at their next meeting. For this purpose she procures a Spanish dagger, but when she arrives at the spot agreed upon is horrified-and withal relieved —to find him dead with a stiletto in his breast. After the subsidence of the excitement con- sequent on the discovery of the body of the man (who is quite unknown to all save Isabel) Sir George Fairfax renews his attentions to Miss Dundas, who, feeling herself free, accepts his proposal. The marriage gives general satisfaction, and they have settled down to the usual life of a country squire and his lady, when all Isabel's old fears are revived in an alarming manner by the appearance of Sebastian Lopez, the brother of Pedro. He is marvellously like his deceased brother in appearance; indeed, so close is the resem- blance that Isabel fears there has been a resurrection of the dead. She is soon sneer- ingly disillusioned on the point by Sebastian, who reveals his identity and declares his intention to profit by her secrets, insinuating that she has murdered her husband. He is of a less scrupulous character than his brother, and his importunity becomes so un- bearable that Isabel resolves to leave her husband (who is ignorant of all this) and to bury herself in London, hoping thus to escape the persecution of the Spaniard. She leaves a token of her love for her husband, and sends him a letter by the first post after her departure, after which she is as com- pletely lost to him as if she had dis- appeared from off the face of the earth. She becomes acquainted with a kind artist named Robert FavaJ, who teaches her to paint. Afterwards she forms a habit of visiting a certain spot daily for fresh air. Sebastian learns this, and having laid his plans for her capture secures and carries her off to Spain. Robert Faval learns that Madame de Vere (as Isabel now calls herself) has disappeared, and informs Sir George Fairfax, who reveals the story of his wife's departure. Together they set to work to unravel the mystery. Meanwhile Isabel is a prisoner on a sloop in Spanish waters. The above will give only an idea of the earlier portion of the story. The subsequent developments of the plot are very interest- ing, and the story will be eagerly perused by admirers of Miss Russell's work. 0 R N I-t UT -1-1 A G E A JIORN-QUT pAGE. BY ORA R USSELL.
