------+-----------THE BURDEN…
-+- THE BURDEN OF PROOF. At Whitechapel County Court kbefore Judge Bacon) a monthly nurse claimed one guinea. from a, Mrs Galinski for two weeks' attendance. Plaintiff said she was engaged for a. fortnight at 10s 6d a week. Defendant It is not true. Judge B "on Why do not you women have 9 these engagements in writing ? That would save disputes. Defendant: I did not engage her. I already engaged my own nurse. .Plaintiff; Oh, she is a falsehood, an untruth, and not a lady. (Laughter.) Defendant: She called on me, and I told her that if by accident my nurse could not come I would send for her. Plaintiff: Oh, dear Ob, dear I You have a lovely little baby, and you dare say that after kissing the book. Are you not ashamed ? Are I you not afraid ? V\ hat if you were to lose your baby ? I too have a sick child. This afternoon they operate on him at the hospital. If I get in this box and tell lies I would not dare to see him. I Something dreadful v.ould happen. Now, I say yoa did engage me. Judge JUaeon Those may be very good reasons why you are speaking the truth, but they are not evidence. You say she engaged you she denies it. Neither of you have witnesses. The burden of proof is with you. and you fail. Judgment for defendant.

SOUTH WALES FINANCE.
SOUTH WALES FINANCE. ,Cardiff Account Days, Feb. 9th and 23rd.) Saturday, Jan. 27th, 1900. The local market has been abnormally "luiet to-day largely in sympathy with the unsettled tone in London as a result of the nublic unrest which prevails by reason of she bad news from the seat of war in South Africa. Then, again, the disappointing jharacter of the Barry dividend and the more serious outlook HI connection with the railway workmen's dispute is effectu- ally damping the spirits of local operators. As a last factor accounting for the sparsity ?f business may be mentioned the great International football match at Swansea, which drew off la.ge numbers of people. The market has nut made up its mind yet as to exactly how the Barry dividend is to be rated. Just at the moment nobody jares to buy or sell, but to await the de- velopment of events within the next day or two. The Khymney dividend seems to have given general satisfaction, being rully up to expectations After Barry, fears are entertained as to what the Tali may do. To-day very few people have cared to give a forecast of more than 3 per cent. This would compare with 3;2 per cent. for the first half of the year. However, all doubt on this point will be Bet at rest on Tuesday. Coal Shares have been quiet and for the most part un- changed in price to-day. Locket's Merthyr Preferences have improved ji, to 10, aDd Rhymney Iron Old Shares 3d, to 47s 3d. There has been an absolute dearth of busi- ness in the miscellaneous section of the market. The Mining section of the market has also been extremely quiet and slumpy. The only changes in value noted in the raficial list of the Cardiff Stock Exchange are a rise of *4, to 10 in Locket's Merthyr Preference, and 3d, to 473 3d in Khymney Iron Old Shares. National Provincial Banks are marked 5572Xd and 6472Xd respectively. ALBION STEAM COAL CO. The directors of the Albion Steam Coal Co., Limited, at their meeting on Saturday morning decided to recommend the usual dividend at the rate of 10 per cent. per annum for the past half- year, carrying forward a substantial balance. PROPERTY SALE. On Saturday, at Bridgend, Mr Michael Davies offered for sale the old-established commercial hotel kLown as the York Hotel, Bridgend, the Bala including the goodwill of the hotel and the business carried on thereat. The property was withdrawn at a bid of X975 made by Messrs K. H. Stiles and Co., Bridgend, but subse- quently sold to them for CI,OCO. BRISTOL SOUTH WALES WAGGON CO. The directors of the Bristol and South Wales Waggon Company have declared au interim divi- ) dend at the rate of 10 per cent. for the past half. year. RHYMNEY IRON COMPANY. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Referring to A Shareholder's letter in your issue of the 24th, I, in conjunction with him and others, shall look forward with keen interest to the next balance-sheet in the above company. Ours have not been seven years of plenty and seven years of lean, but instead it has been nearly all lean. I have before me the intecim report, lacking again, in vital statistics which are the life and marrow of the shareholders. Why, sir, it is a waste of printer's ink. With the bcom in coal and coke our profits should be quadrupled at least; this is my lowest expectation. Failing this, I would venture to suggest that a searching investigation be made into the contra.cts made this yeal.-I am, &-c., A SHAREHOLDER IN WEST WALES.

CA li UI h'ff r: KG HA NGE.
CA li UI h'ff r: KG HA NGE. BUTE DOOIItt, Saturday. There was a small attendance on 'Change to-day partly on account of the bad weatber and partly to tag attractions of the great inter national football match to bo played at Swansea. Business was on little more than it nominal scale. Taken as a whole the tone of the steam coal market is irregular with a somewhat desided tendency to lower prices. This is espec ally the case in regard to coal for prompt shipment. The accumulations at the dock and railway sidings in tb.o absence of expected tonnage are becoming rather awkward to deal with. For this reason both small niddle men d colliery owners are prepared to take materially lower prices for prompt shipment. The latter are standing out, however, for stiff quotations in regard to business well forward. The houso coal, c^Ke, patent fuel, pitwood; iron ore, and other branches of trade keep rSu';h aboat the same. The following we re* the closing quotations :-First-class steam coal, 26s to 27s second-class, from 24s best drys, 22s to 23,; 61; very beat steam smalls, 153 6d to 15s 9d; best ordinaries, 143 6d to 15s; seconds, from 13s 6d best iMonniouthshires, 223 to 233 seconds, 18s to 20s best honse coal, 18s to 20s No. 3 Khondda large, 23s to 25s through-and-through, 19s to 20s; and smalls, 16s to 16s 6d No. 2 llhondda large, 18? 6d to 19s 6d; aud small, 14s 6d to 15s. Patent fuel, 20s to 25s, according to braud. Coke; 25s to 32s, according to quality. Iron ore—best Rubio, 20s to 20s 6d per ton c.i.f., Cardiff or Newport. Pit- wood, 16s 3d to 16s 6d ex ship, Cardiff or Newport. The freight market was rather quiet to-da.y, as is usually the case on the last day of the week, but the tone reaiained steady to firm, especially for the chief Mediterranean porta. The following comprise the latest operations OUTWARD BOUND STEAMERS. Cardiff to Alexandria, 118 9d (Eptalofas). Colombo, 14s 6d (Croham). London, 5s (Sabrina). St. Miilo, 5s 6d (Greyfriara). SHIP FOR ORDERS. The steamer Silvio, of Bristol, arrived in Swansea Bay on Saturday, and received orders for Bristol.
----------'--IDEARTH OF SERVANTS.
I DEARTH OF SERVANTS. The dearth of servants-one hears it in all direc- tion and from Londoners of all cimses-is just now quite without parallel. Of course, it is the female servant, neat-handed Phyllis, not the male six-footer. The inconvenience is very great, and perhaps explains the complete collapse of hospitable social functions. And yet, if a Lon- doner has any patriotism in him, the explanation is as gratifying as it is surprising. One is accus. tomed to the complaint at this time of year, and to be told tb:>.t the theatres were competing with the householder, and that engagements were preferred to service. This, howe.er, is not the explanation of the present crisis. It is that in all the hrj¡c establishments numbers of shopmen have enli-ited as Volunteers and offered themselves for I the front. Of course, their vacancies have to be I filled up, and women fill them.
