THE WAR,
THE WAR, (Continued from Page 3). CAPTURE OF SPION KOP. THE BOERS SURPRISED ON TUESDAY NIGHT. HEAVY FIGHTING ALL WEDNESDAY. GEN.WOODGATE DANGEROUSLY WOUNDED. The following despatch was issued by the War Office on Wednesday From General Buller to the Secretary of State for War. Jan. 25, 12.10 a.m. (midnight). Warren's troops last night occupied Spion Kop, surprising the small garrison, who fled. It has been held by us all day, although we were heavily attacked, and especially by a very annoying shell fire. I hear that our casualties are considerable, and have to inform you with regret that Gen. Woodgate is dangerously wounded. Warren is of opinion that he has rendered the enemy's position untenable. The men are splendid. [The words 'last night' in the above despatch evidently refer to Tuesday night. General Buller writes soon after Wednesday midnight, as if it were still Wednesday, al- though it will be noted that the despatch is dated Thursday. Further, the all day manifestly refers to Wednesday.]

CONNAH'S QUAY.
CONNAH'S QUAY. CHILDREN'S ENTERTAINMENTS. On Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday nights, the children St. Mark's School, Con- nah's Quay, gave entertainments. This was the fifth annual concert, and to accommodate the large number of people desirous of en. joying the treat that this entertainment un- doubtedly is, it had to be given on the four nights named. The first part of the programme consisted of songs and recitations by the In. fants, who had been trained for their parts by Miss Bartley, and the pupil teachers, songs by standard I boys, trained by Miss Jones, and by standard one girls, trained by Miss Carter, songs by standard II boys, and the girls of the same standard, trained by Miss Lawrie, finishing with the musical sketch, The Perse., cuted Policeman,' by the children in standard III under the direction of Miss Croft, and Mr. Baird. For the second part, the cafttata Bo peep's Picnic' was produced by standards IV- VII, in a manner that showed that considerable pains bad been taken by Mr. Coanel, the head master, Miss Croft and Miss Carter, who were responsible for the production. The choruses and games were rendered by the scholars in the standards named, and the solos by Mabel H. G. Amos, Joseph Kenchinaton, L. B. Parsons, Robert A Conway, Fred Jones, Robert Jones, Barbara IJones, Edward J. Humphreys, May Williams, John Latham, Violet H. Phillips, T. J. Hewitt, Elizabeth Bithell, and William J. Foulkes, all in characters representative of the several parts in the cast Of the cantata. The entertainment on each evening was mosk en- joyable, and declared by the audience to be the best yet given. Over one thousand people at- tended, and a snm of £ 33 was netted towards the building fund for an additional class room for the infants. DEATH OF OLD INHABITANTS. The links in the chain that binds the past to the present at Connah's Quay are getting fewer and fewer, and this week, we have to record the rending asunder of two more. On Friday last, Margaret Williams, the wife of Joseph Williams, Wepre Villa, departed this life at the age of 73. The deceased had had a long con- nection with the place, and her husband has for many years been in the employ of the Freme family, Wepre Hall. Another old inhabitant who passed away was Elizabeth (better known as Betsy), Bithel, who was verging on four score years.

COUNTY COURT.
ted, on the uncieistanding that the defendant was to conduct herself better towards him than in the past. Be remained under the new arrangement until May. After putting down the seed, he gave a second notice to leave. The defendant again begged of him to stay, and he agreed to do, if they gave him an extra pound for the hay, and another for the eorn harvest, making JE2 extra altogether. This the defen- dant agreed to pay. When he left the defen- dant's service, there were £20 due to him, but the detendant only offered him JE18, askiug him to sign a document for the amount. He refused at first, but subsequently did so, receiving £18, The defendant offered him a pound beside, but afterwards declined to give it. Mr. Lloyd Jones for the defence, contended that the plaint ff had failed entirely to make out his case. The man was engaged in Novem- ber 1898, but it was soon found that he was absolutely incapable 8 a matter of fact. he was a mo-it unsatisfactory servant. Nine shillings a week was more than he was worth. He was most insolent in his behaviour; he cursed and swore about the place, greatly up- setting the defendant and her daughter. He refused to place the pony in the trap, and to do other ordinary farm duties Be also went away two, three and four days at a time, so that the defendant was very anxious to get rid of him. There had been no agreement in refer- ence to the extra E2 claimed in respect of har- vest work. When the £ 18 was paid, it was understood to be in full settlement of the ac- count between the parties. Miss Evans, defendant's daughter, having given evidence, His Honour commented upon the fact that the plaintiff had several times given notice to leave, and had remained. He could not resist the claim, and there would be judgment for the plaintiff. [A report of the case Dr. Jenkins v. Dr. King will appear in our next. ED.]
