! DRESSMAKING AT HOME.
DRESSMAKING AT HOME. By SYLVIA. BOY'S SCHOOL SUIT. Many mothers who, before the war had taught us so many lessons of economy, had never dreamt of such a thing are becoming most expert tailoresses where the garbing of the small son is concerned. To Cut Out. The suit sketched is arranged on the sim- plest of lines. The knicks, too, are also of a very easy type to make, and go with the coa\. If you make this suit out of an old garment, unpick and j- Pattern No. 2,115. Here is a real" wa r time economy design, which should 'liase the thrifty mother of a smail bey of 6 to 8 years of aj;e. It shows a simple V very- day suit, Which Will need li to 2yds. of 48-inch goods. clean this as far as possible before making up. Do not try to wrk in the edges, or any other tailored parts, unless they are unworn, other- wise the result is not satisfactory. If made of new material, place the coat fronts to the selvedges, and the centre back to the fold of material. The front facings must extend back to the shoulder, but may be joined more than once where necessary, also the sleeve, but at the under portion only. The knicks must be arranged with the sides to the selvedges, and may he joined at the top or waist edge if the length be a bit short, as the join will be hidden by the coat. The lining for the former must be cut a .trifle larger than the material, as the latter always stretches a bit. Chalk-mark, round the outline very carefully, and allow good turnings at the various edges. To Make Up. Having cut out, thread-mark the outline, or chalk the side not marked, in order to ensure that accuracy which is the essence of good tailoring. Make and put in the pockets, finish off firmly, and press well. Interline the coat fronts with French canvas (cut on the cross), join and press the seam of facing, tack and stitch this to coat front, holding .in a wee hit on the under side, and pare ofF the corners and superfluous edges before turning inside out, stitching, and pressing. Next tack shoulder and under-arm seams, snip, well, open, and press. Sew on the but- tons, then fell the lining in place, keeping it a bit loose, make, sew in the sleeves, and finish off. For the knickers, first of all strengthen the seat-part with corner pieces of stout linen, then join (if necessary and as suggested above), finish off the front?, tack seams to- gether. leaving openings for pockets, which make and stitch in place, then open and press seams, snipping where necessary to make them set quite ilat; arrange the knee- portions into the bands (these are cut sel- vedgev, ays of the material), stitch, press, and finish off, also the waist-part, which is faced with stout lining, and requires buttons firmly sewn on for the braces. A GIRL'S AUTUMN COAT. Though we have been favoured with bril- liant summer weather we have also had manv storms, and the season of year is ap- proaching when more may be expected, so that a protective coat is indispensable for the school or business girl. For the second sketch this week I have therefore selected a pattern which can easily be carried out by the home-worker. So far as materials are concerned, I must leave the choice of these to the maker. To Cut Out. The fronts must be placed to the selvedges and the centre-back to the fold of the material. The sleeves must have the centre-line on the Pattern No. 2,1 16. The coat sketched is quite easy to make, and is intended for the school or business girl from .12 to 15 years of age. Frem 3 to 4 yds. of double- width goods will be required, straight, as these are cut all in one. Collar and cuffs (the former of which is double) should be arranged selvedge-ways. The front facings may be placed in the most economical way to use up all the pieces, as if you cannot get them all in one length they may be joined more than once. To Make Up. A lining for this type of coat is not neces- sary unless thin cloth is used, when the same remarks as to its cutting apply as to the boy's coat.
