IjX.OYI> (OF RHAGATT). AN APPRECIATION. I With profound regret we announce the II death, at the age of 57, of Mr. Edward Owen Vaughan Lloyd of Rhagatt, Merionethshire, and of Berth, Denbighshire, which, after a comparatively brief illness, took place at j Rhagatt, on Thursday afternoon last, to the 1 inexpressible grief of a wide circle of friends and admirers. Mr. Lloyd was the eldest son of the late Mr. Edward Lloyd who pre-deceased his brother. Mr J. Lloyd of Rhagatt, who was, in his day, well known and much este med in the town and district. From his earliest settlement at Berth, Rutbin, Mr. Lloyd took an interest and an active part in the life of the county. He qualified as a Justice of the Peace for Merion- ethshire on April 8th, 1890, and has served as High Sheriff of Denbighshire and Merioneth- shire. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant for the latter county. For many years he proved himself a valued member of Quarter Sessions and at the time of his decease was Chairman of the Corwen Bench of Magistrates. He was a member of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion and frequently attended the I gatherings in London. He was also a roem ber of the Gorsedd of the National Eisteddfod in which he was actively in teres ed he likewise took a keen interest in the Corwen Eisteddfod and contributed handsomely to the Building Fund of the Pavilion. He was a Trustee of the Corwen Female Friendly Society and a warm supporter of the District Nursing Association. In his early days Mr. Lloyd received his education at Eton, and graduated M.A. at Balliol College, Oxford. He was gen- 1 erous in the extreme and many are the instan- 1 ces of Lis boundless charity and solicitude for 1 those in distress. His memory and deeds will 1 long be cherished and kept green in the minds a of those who had the privilege of his acq uaint- I a ance. He bad given of his best to his fellow I men. | At the Corwen Petty Sessions on Friday, the Justices passed the following resolution That the Justices of the Peace of the Division of Edeyruion are deeply grieved by the announcement of the decease of 1 their Chairman, Colleague and Friend, I Mr. E. 0. V. Lloyd. His close associa- 1 tion with this county, and the ueighbour- ing county of Denbigh in all matters I connected with the administration of Justice as well as the deep interest he took m all public affairs educational, charitable and philanthropic,had left their record of citizenship which would long be remembered. The Justices further desire to respect- 1 fully tender to Mrs, Lloyd their heartfelt I sympathy in her preat bereavement." 1 Mr. Lloyd married his cousin, Miss Rose, I sibter of Major Rose, in March, 1898, and the I inhabitants of the district, on the occasion. presented him. with an address and Silver Plate. In polit:cs Mr. Lloyd was a Conservative, and took a prominent part in the formation of the new Conservative Club at Corwen, and was exceedingly tol-rant of those who differed from his views. He was a well-known Free- § mason. He was Past Master of Denbigh and Balas Lodges. P.G.S. W. of the Provincial Grand Lodge of North Wales. Deceased was a strong supporter of the 'Boy Scout' movement, and only recently entertained the members of the Corwen Corps at the Feathers Hotel. On the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of the late Queen Mr. Lloyd threw open his Park and provided hospitality for all comers. Shortly before his decease Mr. Lloyd wrote to the Mayor of Ruthin offering to place his residence, Berth, Ruthin, at the disposal of the Committee formed in the town to provide hospitality for homeless and destitute Belgians.
