CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible fot tli* opinions of our correspondents. To the Editor. Sir,— "Are not two sparrows sold for a far- thing ? and one of them sbiil i-iot fall on the ground without your Patl)er. (St. M lithew), 10, 29). May I draw your attention to the pro- posed wholesale destruction of sparrows, in which children are to take part. Such a persecution would be iniquitous for its inhumanity, and really contrary to the interests nf ff)-,rl Tn every country and every district where birds have been systematically de- stroyed, the result has been the same. 3. Insect and vennlf) plaqu B. 2. Serious losses to crops of all kinds. 3. Failure of man to, deal with the plaques. 4. Efforts to bring back the birds. The natural enemy of the insect is the insect-eating bird. Nearly all the small birds of Great Britain are engaged in this work of destruction from March to August, and in a lesser degree all the year through. No one spelics but destroys some pest. The sparrow eats crane flies, small caterpillars, and wire- worms, and feeds its nestlings mainly on harmful insects. Farmers, market gardeners, and ethers should therefore on no account destroy birds. All experience shows that the preser- vation and protection of iqsecfe-eating birds is not only essential ia the in- terests of the grower, but is of vital importance in the interests ol food pro- duction in Great Britain. Believe me, Sir, Youre faithfully, LUCY E. LLOYD THEAKSTON.
