THE BATH AND WEST SHOW fevransea. lias started well. Yester- day's attendance at tho Bath and W&st Show was well in advance of what has I been registered on the first day else- where in recent years., and there, are in- dications that as the days proceed the town will maintain its place in the j Annals as holding the records for | everywhere outside the immediate hom-e of the Bath and West Society. It is quite possible that, amid all the entini- siasan and attraction of the occasion, "crne people might be tempted to ask: tV hat is the real use of such institu- [tiaiis? One answer is quite clear up-ern tho surface. Such an exhibition is an occasion wlwm breeders of various kinds of farming stock can put their possessions to the test of the competi- tive element. Men's fancier and liking have a wide rango of diversity over which to wander. Tito sporting ele- ment enters into many of them. The. cattle breeder on the one hand finds! pride in owning an animal that' wins a prixe just as much ais does the owner of a famous racing yacht. But there is this difference, 'apparent as one looks around such a scene as that in the Jiath and Wost Showground this we*?k—that the result of the latter is found in the benefit that it bestows upon the agriculturist. The. more perfectly cattle can be reared, the greater the chance of success to agriculture as a Witole. This the judges of such exhi- bitions have in mind. In s-hire horses they look for the graxrefully sloping patterns that denote <jar;y action and greater pulling power. In tJieep they leak for the even growth of coating and the well rounded limbs that indicate the best results in wool and mutton. In cattle they look for the evidences that prove capacity for milk-giving and beef- giving. All over th4 country fanners and fanciers arc busy all the yurc round, fostering the multiplication of ilwks and herds, selecting the most promising prodnœ, and maintaining their stocks in tho best- possible condi- tion. Suœœs or. failure can be ascer- ?t,ain,o(f by but one test, and that is the test of collective comparison in places where all gathered come into competi- tion for the favours of accredited e)&-i perts. As one walks amongst the varied ranks of. stalls at, the Swansea ground this week ho finds manifold in- dications of differences of idotil and of opinion, but the end is the same, in that I it encourages the necessarily constant struggle for the atinment of perfec- tion.

THE FREE CHURCHES AND AI LITURGY. The expression. of opinion which came from the Moderator of the GenBral; Assembly at Liverpool this week to the I, effectthat the Free Churches of Wales might well consider the question of re- vising their form of service, does not fall upon unprepared ears. Among the younger men the advisability of I some form of liturgy has been discuss-cd for a long time, and the balance weighs over in favour of a variation in the I system under which the Sunday gather-^ ings are, from start to finish, in the I hands of one man. There is) of course., a school which will give. any proposal to introduce even the briefest liturgy their most strenuous opposition. This is the school in direct line. of d«scent to that which was shocked when musical instruments wero broug11 t into use in the froo churches, the school which re- gards.a liturgy as tending to sacerdotal- ism. But another generation has come to the iront, which would give the wor- shipper ;i more- intimate part in the service and would accord him sumethin-g to do besides joining in the singing of hymns. "We? only outline the position here, 10- oarse its discussion in detail is not a matter for the lay press. But we would emphasise the significance of the tnovement as betokening that, when disestablishment- has become law of the land, the relations between A liturgical and Free Church of Waies, and the other churches now known as Noncon- formists, will be nearer., AY-o do not think that the present bitterness of feol- i fig will last. It will gradually disap- pear; and wo arc s-anguiue eawjugh. to believe that, in the course of years, the younger nwi in the Free Chuirohes of Wale." will bo working togetlier heartily m their common purpose. Definite re- union is a drea.ji). A union wliioli wiil altow all parts in x-1k> tHx-desiaisticai body 3, considerable amount of la I it vie in thøir doctrinal aad admini&fci'si.tiyo views, is quite pcssible within our time. Non- conformity in Walc,6 is moving towards it now. The Free Church of Wales cam- not keep out of that movement.

The. needs of Brynhyfryd are being carefully watched on the Council by Mr. Councillor Evan Jones, who has just se- cured. a promise that the electric light- ing of E-tlon-r(-,ad,- as far as the present tram terminus, shall be considered. At present the lighting leaves much to bo desired in effectiveness, and the exten- sion of the electric light well into Rryn- hyfryd will be a boon keenly appre- ciated by the inhabitants. Councillor W. G. Lloyd is also interesting himself in a similar question with regard to Neath-road. It's dogged as does it, and we do not doubt that these two excel- lent ward representatives will secure the reforms in lighting for which they ape now agitating.

VALLEY RAILWAY AND THE SHOW To the Editor, Sir,—I would thank you for drawing the attention of your readers in the Swamea V alley t the unfairness of the Midland Railway towards t-heill JJ1 regard to the issuing of cheap tickets to the Bath and West Show this week. Handbills have been freely distributed by the company stating that tickets will be issued to Swansea (to tho show) from all parts within a radius of 200 miles, Swansea Vale excepted," at a fare aud-a-third, minimum Is. Whv don't they allow the same privilege to the inhabitants of Swansea Valley- especially the upper part? WELbH BIBLE IN BRAILLE -To the Editor. Sir,—Many of your readers will doubt- less be interested to read the enclosed letter which I received from Mr. C. When this becomes an ae- complished fact, I trust that all blind j persons able to read Welsh will at least do all they can to procure some volumes-of the Bible.—Yours, etc., David T. Rees. H lT DEPA ULT OF PA. YMENTr To the Editor. Sir.—Nearly 80,000 persons were, ac-' cording to the latest annual report of H.M. It is needless to dilate upon the suffering so caused, not only to the actual otienders, but to tiieir families. I There is a Bill now before Parliament which, should it become Law, will, it is hoped, have the effect of reducing this enormous number of commitments. 1 Meanwhile the Church Army is pro-! Spared, to give faaLtK- in ]) L-, C-'i w, oj we have a Labour Home, to men sen- tenced to payment of a. fine, and im- prisonment in default and willing to work, to earn the auiount of the xiiiv, by working at our Labour Home, by ar- rangement with the oiffcer-in-charge, a.t such hours as will not interfere with their ordinary employment. We trust; that magistrates will avail themselves freely, of this opportunity, and will al- low time for payment of finos on con- dLtion of the offender working at the Houio. in his spare time until tho amount of the tir.e is earned. The ex- periment' hay already been successful in certain cases. We have brought this plan to the notice of the Home Secretary, and it has his full approval. We trust that the result may bo to do away with a very great number of instances of the prison stigi^a, being placed upon men who are oiten little (kEernng or it, and /rith a vast amount of sniftering to de- pendents.—Yours, etc., W. Cartile, I Hon. chief secretary. I
