WHERE HE JOINED THi, TRAIN…
WHERE HE JOINED THi, TRAIN I A charge of- defrauding the railway com- I paay by travelling witaovat a ticket was at the Ammanford Police Court on Mon- day preferred against Wm. Jamøs, Blaenau Lodge, Llandehie. Ho was found en the London and North Western Railway U.r>0 Sltrowsbury train by ticket collector Thomas Llan- dilo. He said he had joined the tram at Glanrhyd, but when reminded that the train had not stopped there, said he came from Llandovery. Wit?>es« rhen made out a ticket receipt for b. 4d. for him. but dr'f'eii-iant refuted to pay, then stating that it was ia Llangadock ho joined the train. Witness said he was positive de- fendant did not join the train at U'\8- gadock, as he himself joined the train at that station, and thero were onlv two ladies besides. Def dant tjld the Bench that it wa? N?,?.d?-k he came by train. n? had a l?t down as far as Llamnda, and walked t, Llangadoclt. Detective Iiunector I)arrall said the (de- fendant had iiiliiiif.ted to him that tie came from Llandovery. He added thai that class of offence was very much en the increase, and he was afraid advanta^: was being taken or the shortage of staff an the railway. A line ef tl imposed.
STAGE AND STALLS j
STAGE AND STALLS PMGBAMWS AT LBSAL THEATRES AM HALLS Grand Tneatre. During thit; wiwk aud next week tiiero ought to be large audiences ar, the Grand Theatre, Swansea, ior Mr. Byrne is offer- ing the ever-popular pantomime, 0.1.1- derella." It would take many ooiamnfi to trace out the nu.mertKij form« that the story had taken and the number ),? hun- dnxI6 of years that it Has been a faYourite among?; 'fairy tal?. .Neady every chap- ter of mythology contains something of it—Zani, tfeneganrbian, Malagasy. Zan- zibariaa, Maoagascar, ancient Greece, Slavonic, Scandinavian, Magyar, and Welsh—all have some reference, far back in the earliest days ef story telling, to the tale of two ugly si^tens who impose upon their youngest sister and are in turn 04," I l ions of .imposed upon, by th/p fate's. MilHons of cLihlren and grown-ups have been c/harroed and inix-rested in the legend, just as those of Swansea may be this week, ordy that whibt many of the forms in which the story has been told are repulsive, with tragic endings, the version now on view at the Grand Theatre is dressed iu. all the attractions of beautiful stage setting, with plenty of merry-making and with a happy ending. For a provincial touring company it would he hard to beat the show that Mr. Byrne is putting on. One could not de- sire to look upon a more charming couple than Miss'-Biilie Bell (" Cinderella ") and Mies Maud Diamond ("Princ.e CatmÚr n). They sing and act beautifully, and the hitter's rich contralto voice compares well with the soprano of the heroine. As for fun, there is a full feast of it, provided by a party of five that one w.ould go a long way to see. They are Miss Minnie Kayiier ("the Barouess "), whose contri- bution is not only good comedy but also very artistic acting, and her eupply of Malapropi.-nis T. enough to make Webster, Johnson, Murray, and all the reet of I the lexicographers corns ouc of the <kptlw armed with cud??; Mr. Hereram Noel (" the Baron "), whose toe and J?neo con- tort.i?ns are q'ute in keeping with the rest of the comedy; Mr. Bert CharLcs and M". Harry Harr(1t (the two ugly sLsterg), whose make-up i6 a? grotesque as their patter and husinews is hmny; amd Mr. Dan Kelsey Co Capers ■"), who is as I full of laughter-provoking tricks as an egg is full of meat. Miss Marie Gros is a clashing Dandini," Miss Edyth Muzteon is a beautiful fairy godmother, whilst a dozen other members of the company are caste well and play their parts to perfec- tion. Added to the success of the players, there are the attractions of a couple of very neat transformation scenes, a fairy coach with tasteful adornments of elec- tric lights and a couplo of pretty little t light, and a co4ti-- ponies, and a lot of sccttery that helps io make effective appeals to the eyes. The mui<: is eatchy." and the lyrics selected well, so that on Monday evening the gods were able to take part in the proceedings with considerable vigour. Taken all through, whilst the panto, is not too old for tho youngsters, it is not too young for the growa-ups, and all who want an even- ing's merry relaxation will find it with ( Cinders" at the Grand. The panto. plays closely, and from the time the. car- tain goes 'up for the first scene until it comes down for tho National Anthem there are DO tedious moments. The Empire. I uevues come, and revues go-the majority of them never to return. For- tunately there are eome that will bear repetition, and with these The Radium (lid," presented to Swansea Empire audi- ences this week by Mr. Geo. Foster must ->e placed. Of plot thcr;> is none, but it possesses the rudimjep's of an idea, whinh is not overworked, a. great number 4-f vivaious girls in prtty dresses, tuneful music, and, best of all, principals with p?rsonalitiM. Mias Alva York and Mr. Syd Howard would make any "bow go. Mi?s York can siBg a eoug as few c?n, and she is an actress of unusual ability. The idea is that from a simple country maid she is transformed by the magic of one Zigani into the lively and fasci- nating Radium Girl." By a stroke of good luck, Z,.gani's" assistant at the moment is an Egyptian with a Lan- cashire accent, who in private life answers to tho name of Syd Howard, and what he doesn't know about the art of making people laugh isn't worth worry- ing about The show moves with so much speed and precision that it is Jiffi- cult to believe that ne-arly one hoar and half secarates the initial rise and final faR of the curtain. This may be be- cause people arc too busy laughing to notice the flight of time. Other princi- pals. who work hard and successfully aro Miss Aida Martine, Miss May Hallatt fwbo cauees all the trouble), Miss Mamie I/eslea, Mr. Victor King, and a troupe of clever dancers. Among the funniest incidents are the "Revue Artiste and tbe Sefio," the "Burlesque Beauties," and the Magic Flute." Altogether H The Radium Girl is to be classed with the best revTies Mr. Geo. Richardson has brought to Swansea. On the same bill are the U Six Ceylons," Happy Tom Parkei-, and the Bioscope, The Royal Theatre. I A repetition of the packed house scenes, witnessed since the opening of this hall on Boxing Day, took place at the Royal theatre on Monday, when the film master- piece, The Woman Who Did." was screened. It is an adaptation by the f"prard Film Co. of the banned novel bv Grant Allen. Around the picture hangs a story that cannot fail to impress. The management are certainly giving value for I money, as visitors get at least three and a-half hours' pictures, and the quality is without exception excellent. A number of other pictures complete the finest pro- gramme yet ataown since the opeaujog of the ball. We were informed by the maaaigeEnenfc j that shortly the Royal will undergo fur- the- cb?nf;-?. The spacioos ?ail?ry which is at prc?nt the cheap part of UK? hou&e, wiH be cc'?DpI?tply ovcrlMndf?i Mtd made into a grand ci rde; a Taew hoor will alt-c, be put in. 'l']}0 screen, has also been 1 altered and enlarged. j The Picture House. j The Picture House is "til1 going ) strong," and a large audience alsfcend-ed < 011 Monday evening to witness a ably good programme. "Jim—Just Jim," a. most touching Trans-Atlantic master- piece, was the feature film. The gripping story of how an ex-oonvidt lived down the past. and earns out trumps from the ordeal, held the audience spell-bouud. This film shatild certainly- not be rai-&,etl by Picture House patnoas. Blat,l, Bull's Great Raid." a roayni¢ Wes- tern drama delighted the audience. Tho &x-ne,s showing the defence of tha tara- i van, against the attacks of the Black Bull Tribe, and the subsequent rescue by II the United Staites troops were wonder- fully realistic. jCxc-ellent scenery, acided much to the realism of the picture, which is a Domino" f<?:ture. ?'n?n Old Atti," a drMim. was a very good picture. His Two Parents W as a clever me!<? drama. Charlie Chaplin, mirth-?ing. w?s well to the for? with a side-splitting comic, Those Love Pan:' In this ?Im almost <?r'ry one ai Charlie's litU eccentricities were eeen1. and watched with delight by the members of the audience. Castlo Cinema. I H Maré\() Covington," a tinsst-class story of American life in the eiarJy sixties, is the star pkture for the first three days at the above cinema this week, and a. really excellent production it is/ cleverly conceived, powerfully acted, and superbly photographed. The story is one of in- tense interest, and shows how two cun- ning fellows wreck the Ol\(e beautiful an d happy homo of an DId olonel and his grandchild, and lyr**ng them to (JiTe necessity, but in titrough the good offices of a young rolicator, all is made right again. Other picturer. of equal merit and interest are cliown-in fact, tho Castle programmes are always meri- (oriou.s-irwlndillg films featuring G. M. Anderson (Bronco Billy), the charming actress Miss Pauline Bush, and other favourite screen celebrities. Thero will 1m a complete change of programme on Thursday. The Carlton. -1 The premier position in the Canton pro- gramme for the commencement of this week is occupied by a film verfien of Char- lotte Bronte's famous novel u Jaaie Eyre." The American Biograph Co/e representa- tion of this masterpiece is remarktblo- for the manner in which the producers have adhered to the original. The var ious th ril- ling scenes^re vividly portrayed. The acting also is of the highest order, so that movie" lovers will certainly appreciate this masterpiece. The Eternnl Prob- Ic,ni," a clever, wel'-oonceivcd film, was g-rcatly appreciated, the acting of Francis X. Bushman being wonderfully realistic. Animated Gazette was, as usual, highly interesting. Chas. Chaplin was in Zt'nt form. in Those Love Pangs," when both his hands and feet were in constant requisition. He was well supported by Ch?t&r ConMin. who was also very droll. A reallv gocd Nestor comedy wa? W))f,n I the Monkey Strayed," in which <m ill -I telligent mnk0y plays a pNmÍDent part. The Elysium. I Mary 1 ickford, the idol of the screen, I the noted Famous' Players artiste, was again featured at the Elysium on Monday I evening, this time in >hø role of a, half- breed Indian maiden. The Little Pal is indeed a picture in which she should not be missed. The full cowboy excite- ment attends the film, and the plot is exceptionally clever, and well conceived. Black Brand, a camp bully, shows nn- welcome attentions, but Mary is eventu- ally rescued by an Easterner, who, being afterwards taken ill. finds a gOûd. friend in the little pal. Black Brand is later shot and ull end* well.. Gaumont's Graphic" was also shown. A four-part iamoag Players comedy, entitled, iVvobe/' will be the order at the latter half of tlie v. eok. Oxford Cinema. The great picture a t the Oxford Cinema this week is an emotional Italian photo- play, entitled, Loved and Lost," which tragically presents episodes in the life of the heir apparent of Luaitania and a beautiful girl. It features Signoriiia Lyda Borelli and other leading Italia a artistes, the principal scenes being in Milan. This picture is exclusive for Swansea, and no one should fail to eeo it. It is, however, but one of a number of beautiful films, I humourous and puthetic. One is a par- ticularly ÚmuJ" cowboy tale, in which Pimple tells of how he captured an out- law who stopped a mail cart and stole the baby's milk! There's plenty of all sorts at the Oxford Uplands Cinema. I -_ft-, t I a. poweriui drama, is oemg shown in pictures at the Uplands Cinema the first part of this wrok, It is entitled, The Hard Road," and represents the lives of two sisters, one going tho way of the transgressor while the other leads a use- ful life, and it has the inevitable end- ing. It is splendidly produced. Another fino film is entitled Deliver the Goods," and ehows how men in France suffer a the trenches through strikes among workers at home. The German spy ele- ment enters largely into tho picture. There is a good' series of comic pictures, and amongst others, included in a very fine programme are "Their One Love," One who Serves," Little Herman," Putting on the Fluence," IIow Heroes are made," and the Eclair Journal, which gives the latest war scones. r-
