RF " - ? .- I ISTAGE AND STALLS.…
RF I STAGE AND STALLS. I interesting Pictures, Bright i Revue and Comedy. The programme at the Grand Theatre next week is an exceptionally interesting one. and should fill the house at each per- formance. The very amusing comedy in three acts from the London Playhouse, "A Seuvso of Humour," being staged. The comedy is a little gem in its way, and it is delightfully staged, and the acting throughout is superb. The company includes such bril- liant actors and actresses as Messrs. Henry Carter, Lionel Scott, C. H. Ker-I sley, Miss Vera Criehton, Miss Geadier Jetfson and Miss Nora Craigie. The comedy will be preceded each evening, by a one-act comedietta, A Misunderstan-I ding." in which Miss Janet Hodson and Mr. Henry Carter will appear. One of the most popular of the earlier revues was Irish, and Proud of it too," a production run by leading Irish artistes among themselves, and one which enjoyed a lengthy stay. A sequel has now been written by the versatile Wal Pink en- titled As h:.3h as ever." Heading the all Hibernian cast is Joe O'Gorman and his talented daughter Norah, supported by Hosio O'Connor, Mary Sweeney and Martyn Hagan, among others. It will provide the head-liner at the Erapire next week. One of the cleverest artistes in pure pantomime—action without speech—is Sam Barton, who keeps the house in roars of laughter over his at- tempts to mount a cycle. His eccentri- citics a-wheel are one of the funniest items in variety. A man who gets a laugh every second without speaking a word is not only a star, but among a group of 6tars what can be counted on one hand." Jessie Broughton and Denis Creedori will contribute their entertain- ing turn embracing voca lism, piano and violin playing. The latent news and war films will complete the programme. —w On Monday next at the Picture House "The Oath of Protea," the fourth adven- ture of this fearless woman, which excels all others, and should prove a great at- traction for all lovers of good pictures; The Agony of Fe-ar," a Slig Diamond S. feature of very exceptional merit in three parts; together with a trip to China with the Dorsey Expedition; The Ro- mance of David Lloyd George in cartoon by E. H. Mills; and Poor Papa," in which n. E. Wolf Hopper, the famoul, American actor, is the star in a clever comedy, completes an exceptionally strong pr€(;rammo. For the week-end, Cleo liidgley and Wallace Reid will appear in HcctDr Turnbull's story, The Selfish Wcman." It is a tale of exciting ad- venture in the Imperial Valley, Cali- fornia, during the building of a railroad line. Cleo Kidgloy, as the selfish wife, gives an intelligent performance of her role; also a Rex drama entitled His Brother's Pal"; tne Triangle Comedy, Ambrose's Cup of Love/ featuring Mack Swain as Ambrose, May Amory a's his wife, and Josy Jacobs, the clever child actor. These programmes are well se- lected and will give excellent entertain- ment to all who see these films. Programmes of more than ordinary merit will be presented at the Castle C. aeita next week, The feature picture for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday is a five-part Metro mystery drama, en- titled The Mystery at Cradelbaugh's." It is a detective story after the manner of Gaborian, with much of that writer's in- genuity. As regards teclmique and photo- graphy it is all that can be desired, and is best described as a strong and thrilling play of adventures, with plenty of big moments." It features that attractive actor, Hamilton Revelle, who has aptly called The gentleman adventurer of the pictures," and also that popular favourite, Miss Maguerite Snow, who are well supported by an excellent cast. Phantom Island," a story of stirring ad- venture?, shipwrecks, islands, etc., featur- ing 8ue,h a fine player as Francis Ford, is sure to be appreciated. The comedy scction includes Poor Papa," a two-part Triangle Keystone comedy, and Safe in the Safe," a two-part L-tiO comedy. The programme for Thursday, Friday and Saturday i3 an exceptionally strong one, containing two five-part dramas, and both star feature pictures. One a Metro production entitled A Cliild of Des- tiny," featuring that brilliant stage favourite, Irene Fenwick, as a waif of the woods. The othar is The Sorrows of Love," Triangle Italian drama, unique i t conception and strong in its treatment, iFeaturing- the emotional star, Bessie Barrkcak-. There is alco a two-part Key- stone comedy, Ambrosi's Cup of vVoe." The iilm version of Henry Arthur Jones and Wilson Barrett's famous old- time melodrama, Hoodman Blind, will be screened at the Carlton Cinema on Monday next. The part of Jack Hew- lett is taken by William Tarnum. His acting is the outstanding feature of the production. It is a magnificent piece of work, and Farnum was never soen to better advantage. An "Ideal" Picture comedy, Doing His Bit," starring George Robey, a picture showing the humorous side of war and Robey's im- personation of a woman, will cause end- less fun. "Tho Romance of David Lloyd George" in cartoon by B. H. will also be shown. For the week- end Ilayakawa, the Japanese, and Tsmo Aoki, in A ,len Souls. It is eom-ewhat of a novelty to see ap. Oriental fstar eupjxjrted by a leading woman who is alsn from the Land of Chrysanthe- mums in a purely Oriental photo-play. A Selig Diamond S. feature, "The Scarlet Lady," will also be shown; also a L.K.O. comedy, featuring Dan Russell, The Right Car, but the Wrong Berth," a high-speed eomcdv full of fun and end- less daring; episode N6. 5. 'The Laugh- ing Mask"; "The Intervention of Tito" will also be shown. All loving good pic- tures and inusic should visit th3 Carlton. A programme cf unusual interest will be presented at the Elysium, next week. On Monday, Tuesday, auid -Wednesday, | another Fox snper-productioti .will be screened, Tho Fires of Hate," in which T lJeda Ba ra will appear. n the taking of this film some twenty actors and several spectators were injured. A large plot of ground was mined, and the explosion was timed to take pJace just after a detach- ment of retreating soldiers had passed. Owing to a mistake in signalling the elee- tric coiiiKKjtion, the mechanic in charge opened the switch too soon. In the pre- mature explosion which followed actors, guns, ammunition waggons were hurled several feet into the air. Anothers film of interest is The Romance of David Lloyd George." This is one of the "Cartoon" variety. Liberty," the serial, will ap- pear ui its sixth episode entitled The. Desert of Souls," and a rousing comedy, Almost .Guilty," one of the Nestor H j variety. On Thursday, Friday, and Sat- urdav one of the famous Players" films i will be produced, Spsie Snowflake-or the girl who oould take care of herself," played by one of the most charming of American actresses, little Ann Penning- ton, and supported by a strong cast. The story gives a glimpse of the inner life of the stalling player. Mary Page will reach her fifth episode, in which occurs a sudden interruption of the trial, an in- criminating letter, and a new suspect., Afl. exclusive comedy of the Keystone brand, liard Cider." and one of the Ham ditto, Patented by Ham," will provide mirth. The usual Graphic and Interest films will add to the programme with their two changes. This house is running continu- ously from 2.30 till 10.30. Some very interesting photo-plays have been rc-ceivect for next week's programme at the Theatre Royal. On Monday, Tues- day and Wednesday, the main attraction will be The Night Stage," a powerful drama in four parts{ featuring, Mr. W. F. Hart and the cha.rming actress, Miss May Mitchell; also "Tubby's Tip3," a most amusing Hepworlh comedy; H In the Hands of the Enemy," a drama in two parts; Charlie Chaplin In the Pawn- shop," a Mutual comedy in two parts, a regular shrikeT "The Romance of David Lloyd George," by the eminent cartoonist, Ernest Mills; and Pathe'.s Gazette. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday an important feature will be the production a It's Always the Woman," in which the principal role will be sustained by the famous actor- vocalist, Mr. Haydn Coffin, and the charming actress, Miss Nora Chaplin, an interesting drama in fivs parts; alt-lo Charlie Cliapliu "In tho Pawnshop1"; Dad' Dollars." comedy in two parts; H Little Boy Blue," drama; and Pathe's Gazette.
