Assembly Hall (kindly lent gratis for the occasion). The proceeds are to be devoted towards purchasing cigarettes and"'useiVi presents for our local volunteers in their respective stations. Mr. Eustace Llew- ellyn occupied the chair, and the concert was a success. The heavy rainfall of last month has played havoc with some of the roads. Pc-ny?arn road has become a veritable ciay-pit, and last week it was the scone ¡ of many accidents. On Tuesday some amusement was caused by a horse, ridden ¡ by a young lad, sinking knee-deep in this quagmire. The rider on his motionlese steed cut a ludicrous figure. Help was soon forthcoming, and the horse extri- cated, rosrmed his weary way. A few minutes later a loaded coal cart ap- proached the treacherous spot and get into diiffculties. One of the wheels sunk • up to the axle in the day. The driver was staggered as he saw the wheel sinking: slowly deeper and deeper. Luckily, a number of colliers returning from work approached, and with their united effort, the cart was raised on terra iirma. The next victim was a motor van bslonging to Lyons" Tea Company. The cl-nnfreur, noticing a flaw in the road, steen e left in order to avert the mire, but the l wheels dived into the clay, and the car I smek. o eff oi-ts co-m- I stuck. No efforts could extricate it. A couple of hordes from a neighbouring farm were requisitioned, and, after a delay of two hours in a downpour of rain, the car was at length relieved, and resumed its jorney. The matter having been reported, the road was rapidly put in order. The Distress and Belgian Relief Com- mittee met at the Council School, under the presidency of Mr. William Llewellyn (Fairwater). The chairman and Mr. J. Bevan, Pantyffynon, who a:,t) uic-.iia,!)k-irs of tha Lniol) Committee, explained the pro- oeedings of that day in resjject to the Bel- gian refugees. The commodious mansion of Westfa, Felinioel, has been granted to tho committee as a suitable home by the owner, Mr. Evan Thomas. This offer has been cordially accepted. end it has been decided to fit up the mansion to accommo- date twenty Belgians, with the co-opera- tion and support of the s-u b-comraittees of the Union. A large number of subscrip- tion cards in support of this movement are sent to the various sub-comm: ttes ior distribution in their respective localities. It was resolved to divide tho Tycroes Ward into live collecting districts and 'I request the various places of worship to select to lady collectors in each district. Thus the church will appoint two for Pantyffynon road; Meriah Chapel selects two for Pcnygarn road; Bethesda Chapel for Pontardulais road. and Caersalem. Chapel for Ammanford road. Two col- lectors will also be appointed for Mill-tcrrace 'and Quay-terrace. Tpe col- lectors will solicit weekly subscriptions from one penny per week, according to tho circumstances and generosity of the sub- scriber, and will make fortnightly calls for the same. An earnest appeal is made for consistent support towards the fund.
