A FINE FUND. A striking illustration of what em- ployers and workmen can do wheJ? balWol together "for sweet charity's sake," is furnished by the recently published state- ment of accounts of the Richard Thomas and Co. Employers and Employees Joint War Relief Fund. It was jus't three years ago that this Fund was brought into existence thanks largely to the generous. initiative of the late Mr. Beaumont Thomas. At that time, em- ployes of the lirm were nockmg to the colours in hur h'cds, and it was felt that something should be done for the wives and families of the volunteers. This was the raison de existence of the Fund, and when the men expressed their willingness to make weekly contributions for this deserving cause, the Company came for- ward with an offer to subscribe an equal amount. This will explain the gratifying fact that during the three years, no less a sum than tl7,957 has been paid out to the dependents of enlisted employes. In addition to that, generous grants have been made to various war charities. The present position of the Fund is most satisfactory, and the work already accom- plished rejects the greatest credit on all concerned. THE CARNECtE OFFER. In our last issue we announced that the Carnegie Trustees had made an offer of t6,500 for the erection of a new Public Library in the town. This oifer follows upon a visit paid recently to Llanelly by a. representative of the Trust who was able to see for himself what the town hga already provided, unaided, in this direc- tion. The generous gift is contingent upon several conditions, some of which it will be easy to comply with. There are, however, others of a more onerous character calling for serious considera- tion. We hope, however, that when the who!c matter comes before the Corpor- ation, it will be dealt with in a broad and generous spirit, with due regard not merely to pounds, shilling and pence, but also to the growing needs of a- rapidly developing industrial community. The tendency in matters of this kind is to over-emphasize the importance of keep- ing down tho rates." We have no desire to add to the burden already borne by the ratepayers of Llanelly, but surely, a town of this importance ought to be able to carry a 3d. rate for Library pur- poses. Even as things are to-day, a penny rate is not F',Ifricient to maintain the Library in full emciency.
