-THE SILKEN -REIN,
THE SILKEN REIN, By NAT GOULD, Author of The Double Event." "Settling Day," "In Royal Colours," &c., &c. The true way a horse should be held fast in his running." i, This should be done as if you had a silken rein as fine as a hair, and that you were afraid of breaking it."—SAM CHIFNEY. SY-NOPSIS-Glademere, a beautiful country place, belongs to a gentleman of scholarly tastes, named Richard St. Ann. His son Eddie is a boy of very different tempera- ment to his father, being devoted to sport and outdoor exercises. The lad is of a most chivalrous disposition, and takes under his protection a little hunchback, named Willie Newhouse, son of the gamekeeper. Jack Newhouse. employed on the Glademere Estate. The latter's housekeeper is his sister Peggy, a pretty unmarried young woman. Francis IVrexham, tutor to young Eddie, exercises a very beneficial influence on the lad's character. Willie Nev,'house, during a visit to Eddie's "den," reads a book by a geat jockey, Sam Chifney. describing how a horse ought to be ridden in a race. "This should be done," according to Chifney. as if you had a silken rein as fine as a hair." The book fires Willie with the ambition to become a jockey, an ambition encouraged by Eddie St. Ann. Quite suddenly, Richard St. Ann dies, leaving his magnificent E.'state II and fortune to Eddie. In his will he appoints as the boy's guardian, Sir Harry Wallman, a baronet, member of Parlia- ment, and wealthy banker, who believes in using "the silken rein" in his management of men. Handsome beauests are also left to Francis Wrexham and the parish clergyman (the Rev. James Simcoe), the former to con- tinue to reside with Eddie; the latter con- trives to interest Sir Harry in his desire to make Willie Newhouse a jockey, the baronet approving of the young squire's ambition to own racehorses. The latter goes up to town to pay a visit to Sir Harry, where he meets Lila Goulston, the banker's step- daughter. Weston Goulston (Lila's brother) is a rake, who has been forbidden the house by Sir Harry. Eddie. during his visit, is much pleased by Lila's soGiety, and Lady Wallman makes no effort to disguise her desire for an alliance between her daughter and the young squire of Glademere. Eddie and Sir Harry go down to Newmarket, where the latter's trainer, Fred Helton. is pre- vailed upon to take Willie Newhouse into I his stable cn trial. Helton has a number of horsea which are for sale. Eddie falls in love with one of these-a splendid horse called Snowball. As Sir Harry and Eddie return to London the latter says. "I shall never forget my first glimpse of Snowball- what a great horse he is!"—"One of the very best over his distance." replied Sir Harry. "I think you said you would like to ow? him?"—"I should, indeed."—"There might be a way out of the difficulty. You could run him in my name, or, rather, I could run him for you."—"That would be splen- did," said Eddie. "Will you do it, Sir Harry?"—"I'll think it over, my boy; it does not do to rush at these things; we must take time to consider, but I do not see any great difficulties in the way.-Eddie returns home and his tutor believes that Lady Wall- man is the woman who. many years before, jilted him for a wealthier suitor. It was decided that Willie NewhouBe should go to Newmarket after Christmas, and meanwhile he practised riding. It was seen that he had "fine hands," and his success made the stable hands jealous, particularly one indi- vidual, Joel Mears, who lets his temper get the better of him, and is soundly thrashed by Jack Newhouse. Mears is suspected oi poaching, and is lectured by Eddie. CHAPTER XII-Continued. Visitors at Glademere i As they drove towards the vicarage. Eddie j saw the vicar in his garden, and said: "Would you like to see the vicar's garden? ) He is a great horticulturist, and, in addi- tion. an exceedingly nice man." Lila remembered there was a Miss Simcoe, and wondered what she was like. "Yes, please call." Eddie pulled up at the gate, and the vicar came to greet them. "We should like to see your garden." said Lady Wallman. We have heard so much of its many beauties from Mr. St. Ann." "I am afraid you will be disappointed." he replied, smiling. "The roses are almost over, but there is an abhndance of flowers of one ¡ kind and another. I shall be very pleased, indeed, to show you them." The vicarage was always worth seeing at almost any season of the year, for the Rev. James Simcoe was an expert gardener, and managed to have flowers all the year round. After a thorough inspection and much praising of its beauty, which delighted the worthy vicar, they went indoors, and were welcomed by Mrs. Simcoe and Florrie. Needless to say, Florrie Simcoe had heard of the Wallmans arrival at the Hall, and she was as anxious to see Lila as that young lady was' to see her. Florrie Simcoe looked at her best. and was a picture of health and con- tentment. Lila recognised in her a for- midable rival if she meant to try and win the affections of Eddie St. Ann, a point upon which she had not yet quite decided. Florrie was not slow to grasp Lila's advantages, pro- vided she had designs in his direction, while Mrs. Simcoe and Lady Wallman were simi- la-rly occupied in summing up the situation. The gentlemen, as usual, were utterly ob- livious to thtis side play. and. as for Eddie, be had not the remotest idea that he was sneh an object of interest to the ladies present. With Florrie Simcoe he had always been on good terms, and they treated each other with a familiarity and lack of restraint that was hardly understandable to Lady Wallman and her daughter, who had lived in such a different sphere. There was no pretence about Florrie Simcoe. She was a sensible, outspoken girl, and per- haps her one failing, if it can be counted a failing, which is much to be doubted, was that she generally spoke as she thought. without regard to consequences. She had not the wiles of Lila, and would not have under- I stood that somewhat fashionable lady's manoeuvres. Lila had a way of expressing herself which often puzzled her hearers, and left them in considerable doubti ae to her real sentiments, or whether she really meant what she said. No such mistake was possible with Florrie Simcoe, and, after all, it was to her advantage, for it safeguarded her from the entanglements of insincerity. A judge of character would not have hesitated which to trust, although perhaps Lila, might exercise the greater fascination. "An ,exceedingly nice family." was Lady Wallman's comment. "Miss Simcoe is a most unaffected girl; no one could help liking her." "I thought you would be pleased with the Simooes," said Eddie. "The vicar is a down- right good sort, and a rare sportsman. We have had some grand days together with the rod and gun." He made no mention of Florrie Simcoe, and Lila said: "I suppose you see a good deal of them?" "Oh, yes, we do not stand upon ceremony." Then he added: "Do yon see that cottage? That is where my head keeper lives, and it his son that Sir Harry persuaded Helton to take into his stables. I am much interested in him, and he is a very bright little fellow." He stopped the horses at the cottage gate, and Peggy came out. She was somewhat taken aback when she saw the ladies, but Eddie quickly put her at ease. "Is Wiliie in?" he asked. "No, Master Eddie; he's out riding that big brown horse in the park. He's always on horseback now." I "I'm glad to hear it." he replied, smiling. J "Perhaps we sliall meet him." • I "The people seem uncommonly healthy about here," said Lady Wnllman, who had noted Peg:ry's robust figure and rosy cheek. "It would be surprising if they were not. said Sir Harry, smiling'. They have every- thing to keep them healthy; plenty of fresh air and wholesome food, and a good master who pays good wages." "I think they are all fairly contented," replied Eddie. "Of course. there are some grumblers. but that is only to be expected." They did not meet Willie, but Sir Harry expressed a desire to see him, and Eddie sent word for him to come up to the Hall in the evening. This he did, accompanied by his father, and Sir Harry grave the lad some useful hint-a about his future employer. "If yon ride well, and try and succeed in your work, Mr. Helton will, I am sure, do all he can for you. Let him see you always do your best, no matter how trivial the task. Everything worth doing at all is worth doing well; remember tha, Willie promised he would try and please the trainer in every respect. "And do not take any notice of rudo remarks, if the lads pass any." said Sir Harry. "They are a roughish lot, hut if yon treat them good humouredly. and laugh a thpr chaff, they will soon stop it. Above all filings, show them you can ride, and have plenty of pluck; they have the greatest respect ftir a. lad who can hold his own at exercise -oil :the. lleath," When Willie left. Sir Harry, much to Eddie's delight, said: "I think he will do. I raiher fancy Helton will have a pleasant surprise." I CHAPTER XIII, I Willie at Newmarket. -in tne gpiTng of the year Willio went to Newmarket, accompanied by his kind patron Eddie St. Ann. It was a wrench parting- with his father and Peggy, but he bore it well. and Jack Newhouse took care to conceal the feel- ing of desolation which came over him the week before he left Glademere. When Eddie left him at Newmarket Willie felt lonely, but Mrs. Heltgn took care to mako him comfortable, and encouraged him to regard the house as a home, and Heppie Helton was not slow to show her partiality for him. When the trainer saw the lad for the firsb time he was not quite so disappointed in him as he had expected. True, he was deformed, but otherwise he had a rare figuro for a light weight. His bright, intelligent face appealed to Helton, who was accus- tomed to lads of a very different cast of features. With two snch powerful friends as Sir Harry Wallman and Eddie. Helton waa inclined to do aU he conic}..for the ù<)Y.. and reflected that if Willie turned out a success it would redound to his credit. There were many things in the new arrival s favour. He was small and very light, and there was iii danrrer of him grow- ing tall and heavy, and becoming practically useless when he ought to he most useful. Fred Helton often grumbled because when he had taught lads to ride well they suddenly commenced to grow fast and put on flesh, and thus ho found all his time and trouble com- paratively wasted. It was, he had found from experience, very difficult to get appren- tices of the right stamp. He received scores of applications for iads to enter the stable, but the bulk of them were declined as un- suitable. What I require." said Helton, "is a boy who will not develop into a full-grown man in a, few years' tirr.,e; most of the lads sent to me look like making young giants." There was no fear of 'Willie doing this. On the contrary, it seemed doubtful whether he would grow big enough and have strength sufficient to ride severe races. An apprentice who can ride well, and has the offer of numerous mounts, is a source of profit to his master, and Helton always had an eye to the main chance. He took Willie with him to the lads' room, and told them he was a new apprentice, and that he hoped they would all get on with him. You see. he is only a -little fellow, quite young, the youngest here, and I hope you will treat him with some consideration. I do not want any complaint, and I think you know me well enough to be satisfied I shall not favour him at the expense of anyone else. He can ride, I am told, and ride well. for such a youngster, and in the morning ho will he given a trial, and we shall see how he shapes. Make i-oiirself quite at home, my lad," he said to Willie, and you will soon be accustomed to them." He left Willie in the room, and the lads came refund him to make a closer inspection. "Rum little chap, ain't he?" said one. Hasn't enough strength to hold Fire- brand, I reckon. said another, at which there was a laugh. "What's the matter with your back? asked a coarse-looking lad. who was too clumsy ever to develop into a jockey, and, consequentlsT. was disappointed and sullen. Let his back alone, Bill Mole." said a. slightlsT-built youth, who looked superior to some of the .others. His back's not half as ugly as your face." There was a general laugh at this, for Mole was no favourite, and someone s,-Lid:i "You're right there, Dick; there is liot much of a fortune in Mole's face." No, nor in his riding, either," said Dick Barber. "You shut up." growled Mole. "Because you happen to be built as thin as a rail you fancy you can ride, but you'll not get many more mounts after the way you threw that race away on Sunburn at Hurst Park." "Who says I threw it away?" "I do. Any fool could see it. The borps ought to have won easily." Did you ride him ? No. but if I couldn't have finished better than you did I'd eat my hat -k "Not a very wholesome meal," was the retort. Sunburn finished badly. I told Mr. Helton, and he accepted my explana- tion." r More fool him," growled Mole. Then, turning to Willie, he said: "Where do you come from?" Glademere." "Where's that? Never heard of the place." Willie explained, and added: My father is head gamekeeper for Mr. St. Ann. who owns the estate. He brought me down here." (To be continued.—Commenced February 21).
