THERE ARE TWO WAYS I of acquiring experience: :r The one to purchase it— i; to buy it dear, the other, and better, way to obtain it Gratis. 1 In these days of Free Education there is really no reason why you should pay 1 1.1, 11 the heavy penalty of ignorance. A sentence that in such a matter as House Furnishing often consigns the unhappy victim to a life-long existence in the company of common, „ badly-designed Furniture and incongruous surroundings. The reason is that Artistic Furnishing is a Fine Art, and one might as well expect to execute a Masterpiece in the 1 1 Painting or of Music without j preparation as to select I Fitting, Artistic,"and DurablepFurnishings without the knowledge born of experience and training. Such an error is the more to be deplored, since Buyers may easily insure themselves against all risks, because the result of long experience of careful training is placed at their disposal absolutely without charge, inlhis Beautifully Illustrated Furniture Catalogue, sent Gratisfand Post Free to any address by GANE, the well-known HOUE FURNISHER of NEWPORT, Cardiff, and Bristol; a firm that for nearly a century has been engaged solely in the Manufacture of Furniture in three grades of style, viz., for the Mansion, Villa, or Cottage Home. MONMOUTHSHIREJ :CHILDREN'S QUEEN VICTORIA MEMORIAL FUND. To the Editor of THE COUNTY OBSERVER. APPEAL BY THE RIGHT HONOURABLE, THE LADY LLANGATrOCK. TO ALL THE CHILDREN IN THE COUNTY OF MONMOUTH; The Hendre, Monmouth, May 14th, 1901. DEAR CHILDREN,—I hope you will agree with me in thinking what a charming way it would be to show your love and affection for our late beloved Queen. by subscribing towards a Memorial for the comfort and benefit of sick children, which would take the form of a Children's Cot in the County Hospital at Newport. I feel confident that every chdd in the County will be only too pleased to sub cribe towards this good object, and their parents or guardians would encourago them to do so. I propose that each child shall contribute a penny or more according to circumstances. A sum of X700 at least will be required to endow a Cot. Knowing what kindness and affection for children the Queen always showed, makes me feel assured that you will do your best to carry out this very desirable object. Believe me, yours faithfully, (Signed) GEORGIANS LLANGATTOCK. Donations should be sent to the Honorary Secretary of the Monmouthshire Children's Memorial Fund PERCY LAYBOURNE, Esq., Greenmeadow, Caerleou, Mon.

As is well known, it was on the direct initiative of the late lamented Empress Queen that King Edward's ambassador and Heir-Apparent- as the Duke of Cornwall himself told the Australasians—went over-seas to grace the opening function of the Conainotiwealtli legislative assembly. The imposing Ex- change buildings in Melbourne bore the motto the Commonwealth Queen Victoria s gift to Australia," and when we think of the many memorials which will ere long be reared in honour of her late Majesty, we are constrained to reflect that not the grandest of them, can rival this unique and lasting monument which she herself had so large a hand in setting up. At the inauguration 0 I EVERYTHING WENT AUSPICIOUSLY. The loyal Australians received the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York with sincerest welcome, and the King's gracious message—" My thoughts are with you on this auspicious occasion. I wish the Com- monwealth of Australia every happiness and prosperity," -were received witik genuine joy, and cheered to the echo. His Majesty trusts that the union now so happily achieved may prove an instrument for the further advancement and welfare of his Australian subjewts, and the consolida- tion of the Empire, and every true patriot will do his utmost to broaden and tighten the bond.

I NOTES BY OBSERVERtv [We do not necessarily endorse all our correspondent writes.—ED. "C.O."] PONTYPOOL'S FETE. The Pontypool Chamber of Trade has organized a record-breaking fète for Whit-Monday and Tuesday. They have engaged a galaxy of gymnasts and artistes of the first water, and they present a programme prolific of interest and full of excitement. To musicians, at least, to hear the performances of the Royal Artillery Band alone will be worth the charge for admission to- the beautiful grounds of Pontypool Park, kindly placed at the disposal of the Chamber by Mr. j. C. Hanbtiry, D.L. No doubt, Pontypool will be the centre of attraction for all in this district during the Whitsuntide Holidays. Certainly the promoters deserve success for their enterprise. THE WYE. At a recent meeting of the Wye Board of Conservators the scarcity of fish in the Wye was discussed, and, with a view of reducing the number of beating-nets in use so as to save stock and lead to more fish in the middle waters, it was resolved that the cost of licences for those nets be raised from J65 to £ 20. WATER FROM WALES. The present scheme of the Birmingham Corporation for bringing water from Mid-Wales to Birmingham is approaching completion, and the contractors will shortly carry huge mains into the heart of the city. The original estimate of the cost of the scheme was seven millions, of which four millions were for the first part ot the- scheme and the remainder for duplicating the mains when required. The estimates, however" have been enormously exceeded, and it is considered probable the first part will cost a million and a half more than was estimated. PICKINGS.
