IFARM NOTES. I
FARM NOTES. I The Board of Agriculture in their note on last week's market prices state that at London, Peterborough and Ashford. prices for beet qua- lity cattle declined ju, and at Norwich id per lb., whilo at Fonla of the live weight markets prices were easier by la to 2s per iivo cwt. at the majority of markets. however, quotations remained unchanged, while at Bristol Carlisle, Northampton, Oswestry, &nd Sa'ford slight, rhet wre recorded. The average rate over all mar- keta this week is again about 16s Id per stone, or 13d por lib., for kSit quality shorthorns, while the hvo weight average for the same class of cattle is about 738 6d and for Herefords 763 6d per owt. Sheep continue to make very high pric2s. al- though the average rates returned last week of 15d per tb. for Downs and 14d for cross-breds were barely maintained. prices, if anything, be- iilg a easier. Good supplies of pigs have been forward at mwt markets; at Birmingham, where 5406 wero on oiler during the week, trade was easier, prices for the best quality bacons showing a fall of 6d per score, or 4d per stone, while at Manchester, where 1641 were on offer, against 863 the pre- vious week, trade wm; also quieter with a fall in prico of 7d per score, or 5d per stone. Tho average rales over all markets this week are 13s 7d per stone (19s 5d per score) for bacons and 14s 3d per stone (20s lid per score) for pork- ers, against 13s 8d and 14s 9d per stone respeo- tively last week. Store eattJa E how a further advance in price; at Shrewsbury special sale a large number of the lots made over 60s per live cwt., with a top quotation of 67ft, which was obtained for sorno 9 cwt. cross bullocks, as well as for eome 7f cwt. heifers. These prices are estimated to about 5s pep live cwt. higher than those ruling at t'he :a/!lt eale in December. At Northampton, where nearly 600 store catt!o were ottered trade is reported lie being steady at iaro rates. All classes of store pigs arc in rather better demand especially tho stronger sorts, which »v0 reported as being 2a to 4 per hoad dearer at some markets. According to the latest iist issued by the Agri- cultural Relief of Allien Fund (16, Bedford-square, London. W.C.), YYe.sh fr„imar3 are credited with a total contribution of £ 938 to this movement for giving practical aid to tho stricken farmers oi (w Allies. The- contributions of neighbouring English counties are as follows:—Cheshire (jointly with Lancaehi:e), £ 16,913; Shropshire. £ 2531;' Mon- mouthshire. £ 902, and Herefordshire. JE755. By means of the Fund English farmers arc .helping, rn a practical way. those jgrieulturists of our AGe;! whose lands have been devastated and whose etook has been destroyed in the war. There was a further fail in the price of po. tatoes at Liverpool wholesale market, on Satur- day fallowing the announcement that the Govern- ment are going to fix the price at L8 per ton. Saturday a price was down to 29. Before Fri- day's fall the price was 912 104 per ton. Lambing has already begun in Warwickshire, Mr J. Beasley, of Churchover. Rugby, having several arrivals last week. We arj all beiriig exhorted to keep pigs even city d'weilers with sensitive neighbours, bu!t i;o one serins to have made a very obviouji euigges- tion which would without difficulty increase the piT population enormous y. It is that tho War Office should fiJu-mselvee become pig-keepers on a big softlo by arranging for pigs to be kept on the. outskirts of the training camps Everyone efnicws that there is a prodigious amount of waste food thrown away round the I Brent tra?iin? f?ntre? encgh to ke?p endless f.d, of Bwin.. It would be quite ramble to arrange for army pi, g-keefyirig. The pigs could Jivo a healthy, open. afar life. end there womid be plenty of agricul- tural reot-uits to look after them There is rocm for development on these lines bv institutions such as hoepit4i,-s, which regularly iht'o^v away quantities qf good pig food.

BUNNY IN "THE LAND OF THE I LORD" I A PENMACHNO VETERAN AMUSES BETTWS JUSTICES. Before Messrs T. P. Osborn Yale, R. Parry, and John Hughes, on Saturday, at Bettwsycoed, Evan Evans, Fuches Goch, Penmachno, an elder- ly labourer, charged with killing a rabbit on Lord Justice Eldon Bankes' estate, on December 6th last, much amused the Court. During the 6th iaat, much ajmused the Court. During the hearing, P.C. Owen stood a.t the man'a æœ to render any assistance necessary as an inter- preter. When the gamekeeper, T. P. Thomas, Pandy Mills, entered the witness-box, the following dia- logue took place:— Mr Howet Jones (for the complainant): Are you J. D. Thomas? Witness: I am. Defcwdamt: That's quite right: I know him woll. P.C. Owen: Hush Mr Jones: And you reside at Pandy MiJIs? Defendant: Everybody knows that (laugh- ter). P.C. Owen (energetically): Hu—sh M" Jones: You act as gamekeeper to Lord Justice B<ankes? Defendant: I know that, too loud laughter). P.C. Owen (shaking the defendant): Hu-s- sh Mr Jones: Did you see the deieiidant catching the rabbit? Witness: No, my man, acting under my instruc- tions, caught them. I am sorry to see he has not turned up yet. Defeiaoip-nt (loudly): Aaoh—ha. P.C. Owen (shaking him v;okntlv) lHu-o eh 1 (loud laughter). In answer to the Chairman, Witness spid his man had started on his bicycle, but had evidently nu- t. with an accident. Mr Jones applied for art adjournment of the case until the iwxt court. j TW Btttch, however, decided to hear what the deff juiant had to say. The old man, speaking in the vernacular, pro- c £ <eded :—Well, you Fee, it was like this. Well, I was walking along the Benar footpath, followed by a stray dog. \YeJl, a rabbit suddenly popped up. Well, the dog raced aftor it through the "nrurrow gap" up to "Mount Wesley," in the land of the lo;d-(Ioud laughter),—where he accidentally killed the rabbit. Well, I refuse to be identified or associated with the nefarious poaching instincts of that dog. nor have I any jurisdiction or influence over his peregrinations. I addressed the dog in terms of reproach, and romoved the rabbit. so that it would not become a tn-int and a public nuisance. Well, that is-ail {laughter). Mr Jones: Where were you going to at the- time? Defendant: I had been to Bwlchmaenan. and [ was proceediinjr home along the public path to IVumaclmo when 'the dog, which was a bitch— (loud laughter}—flushed the rabbit. Mr Jones: You had a, ferret and nets? Defendant (g&zing in painful surprise at Mr Jor.ee): Ferret and nets Me? 1 would not trust mvself within va-rds of a ferret. )fr Jones: What do you do for your living? You verv seldom work. Defendant: I am workkig with Richard Jones, ooal merchant. The time thus employed varies, but averages three days a week. Mr Jonos: Did not Trefor Thomas see you on tho Benar land in the morning? Defendant: No; I was not on the land of the lord in the morning! Mr Jones: Which way did you go to Bwlch- I maenan in the morning? Defendant: I don't remember. Mr Jones: You retain a very vivid recollection of which way you returned? Defendant: Yes; the dog, the rabbit, anr Mount Wesley" are associated with the return journey. Mr Jones: What became of the dog? Defendant: The owner claimed it, and I fell it my duty to return the animal with a few wordi of friendly warning (laughter). The Bench decided to adjourn the further htor- I ing cf the casei to the next court.
