The Areanan reported the works free from lao, and nothing wrong wa-i olaerved uuil about 915, when an explosion wia neard, and columns of smoke were been pouring alnngiheTwo Kootw.ys.Tlie manager, Mr. Uoodwin was down ia the pit at the time, and as soon a. possible a body ot men went towards the place wherll thll explosion had occurred. They were, however, unable to get within a considerable distance i.f ihe spot. There are two workings in the colliery (Ule Peacock and tlio Two Foot), and the uplosi .n occurred in the latter at a dis- tance of shout 1,800 yards from the pit's mouth. The pft i» stated lobe one of the beat van, ilated in the country, end the men have been accustomed to -and were at tlie time of the explosion-working with naked lights and lamps. The mine wns noi considered dangerous, although a few weoka ago a young man was Injured firing m shot. The pre- sence of gas was not apprehended, and the cause of the explosion ia difficult to conjecture, except on the theory that a fall of rock bad occurred in a disused potent of the pit and caused art unex- pected escape of gas. The explosion was accompanied by the custo- mary disturbance at the pit's mouth, which told too clearly to the whole neighbourhood that a Larrible disaster had occurred below. Met. women, and children rushed to the scene in wild alarm, and tbtir pitiful terror continued t IIrough the period of suspense which necessarily elapsed before the extent of the calamity could bo ascertained with any degree of certainly. The oKciata of the pit behaved with courageous promptitude, nnd a relief party was immediately orgam-ed, the owners, Mr. J, W. Sidebotl am, M.V. "11,1 Mr. 1. N 8id«botliam, being among 'he first to descend. The first party of rvsruers were ahno3t overpowered by the deidly choko-damp which seemed to pervade the wliole of the workings. The explorers, however, bravely persisted in their gailitnt cITo. to, Gild in the course of the morning managed to reach several groups of dead bodies. Tho poor fellows had evidently tnade desperate efforts to e.'fcipe, but the clioke-damp proved quicker than LIley, and they died as they fell by the way Meanwhile the exploring party had been rein- forced, and strenuous efforts were made to retch el,e remote works where the explosion had actually occurred, bnt the trematittoti. concussion had burled down groat masses of roof, which pi-ovid most formidable obsticles to the rvlier workers. Tlieir progress, therefore, wis ( ainfully I slow to ttietrselves, and mere so to tha hundreds of anxious wives and children waring at the pit's im u it for news of their dear ones. By half-past thr. e—more than four hours after the explosåon-ollly nioo bodies had been recovere I and sent up to the bank. Tlieir arrival gave rise to most lioattrending scc-nes,as,reverently covered over, tliey were taken to the atij, teent tool-house Hid ilicro laid out for identificaiion. Tlu re is not a man «hi lias paid more attention to the i.lmiiiisinlion of the affairs of tlie cuttnty than I Mr. Lleweljn, and a largo number of Liberals deprecated t.ie attempt to prevent liia return to tlio council. The tleaora of PtnUeriy and Loughor showed thtir apprfcintion of Mr. Llewellyn's ser- vices bv giving him a majority gieatii- than the number of votes polled for his opponent. In tin- Tyrdtunaw Division Sir Ilussey Vivlun scored a much easier victory tlmn was generally expected. In several of the Eastern divisions the Con- servative candidate* were returned by large majorities. In Penarth Messrs. H. O. Fislior "lid 1, 8. Corbett were elected by 1,034 votes, against 810 recorded for their Radical opponenU. In Dinas Powis Mr. O.
