ITHE L- I TE SCHOOL BOARD…
THE L- I TE SCHOOL BOARD CONTEST AT POA T.H. TO THE EDITOR OF THS WESTERN MAIL," SIR,-A subscription was opened during the late school boaid contest at Roath, in order to defray the necessary expenses incurred in printing, &c. 1 understand there is still a deficit of sever9.1 pounds. I theiefore think the suggestion made by you in a note to the letter of A Ratepayer," in to-day's issue, ought to be carried out, and the requisite sum made up at once. The heavy burden of a Bchool- board rate has been avoided, and if the majority who overthrew the political Dissenters and Secu- larists were to subscribe sixpence each, the object would be accomplished* I have forwarded my mite to the vicar, Kagian House, Koath, and hope others will do the same.—I am, &c July 6. I PARTIES IN THE CHURCH OF…
PARTIES IN THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND. TO THE EDITOR OF TEN WESTERN MAIR*" SIB,—The following uinerencea between fdgl Church and Low Church have just been published by the well known "Proverbial Philosopher," M&itin F. Tupper, and may, perhaps, interest some of the readeia of the IFc'stcm 1. High Church glorifies man,-the Priest, the Ecclesiastical polity, the body corporate, especially of clerics. Low Church exalts Christ, our only IMeat, and cares nothing fer heirarchs or sacardo- talism, but cbicfly regards individual religion clu- aUy in ministers aud laymen. 2, High Church belicve8 in Apostolicals:lcce3sion, ordinations, consecration, ceremonies, pea^ons, and fcuperstitioiis generally. Low Church considers those, in a great measure, mythical and delusive, limiting them to the reasonable idea of "decently and in order." 3. High Church exaggerates and multiplies the Sacraments, calling them" mysteries," and regard- ing them iciolatrously; and bows to bread and wine as present Deity in flesh and blood, created by the priest, worshipping It accordingly! Low Church has only two Sacraments, not seven; observes them as rites and ordinances, using them with fair rever- ence and believes rather in the real absence, than the real presence (He is not here, He is risen), taking the elements only as emblems. 1. High Church abounds in perfunctory repeti- 1i". 3?f d goes on griading oat ;ú::aje: ;ft: ttehinft:r tion of a Thibetan Llama. Low Church is, system- atically, more chary aa to stated public devotions; while habitually given to earnest spiritual oom- munion with God, disliking and abjuring too many formulated utterances. High Church indulges in sacred histrionigcs of all sorts, as processions, chomterl, flowers, inoensB, banners, vestments, postures-all set to music and made the mc.?t of as to picturesque effect; going as .e.? the I I use" as possible. Low Church d enounces all these as utterly mm?aand unspiritual, fan::la::alu:dIf(:i;d A.ti,h??t e,.d rlot the errig .ad ,I?.pi?es a. than puerile all kinds of Ritaal- istic millinery and criestcrafty theatricals. 0. High Church professes to scorn the laity, turn- ing its back upon the congregation continually; whilst it works upon weak consciences to drain from the insulted people perpetual offertories and indi- vidual confessions. Low Church claims to bo genial and sympathetic, obtrudes the money bag as little as it can help, denounces the Confessional, and sends its flock straight to the Throne of Grace. 7. High Church is zealously given to the proselyt- ing of us back to Rome, through so called priests with their fo-called sacrifices; is at present a fashionable folly of the rich; but little dreams how much it is abhorred by the honest heart of middle- claiB and working England, which is essentially, Protestant, and not Catholic. Low Church wins souls away from the Papal Babylon, through pastors feeding us by bible teaching, and is (where capably and earnestly exhibited) the really popular form of religion, and the power of God unto &aIYation. 8, In fine, Bish Church ia priestJy, patristic, formal, ceremonial, eacramentarian; given to Lonts, retreats, fasting and feasting, an d all manner of cut..r f::a: f:tinoernc aftb; hardening consciences, pampering lay self-right- eousness, and corrupting the clergy through ambi. tion and presumption; whereas Low Church is Scriptural, spiritual, pious, humble; making faith, graces, gifts, and g.dlie.? everything in Christ, and ceremonials and services as nearly nothing M t-ossible.—I am, &c,« J A CHURCHMAN.

THE VOLUNTEER ENCAMPMENT AT UVEUNOCK POINT. IMTCnuN0 TUK TENTiS. I R ("'tB""No ot I" VlVETAUATlONS K?U (^ivim 01 lt Illy OUB tUWtAL \'ORIISb. There is now plenty of life and animh, ° RU^ ndahhour1w()¡.l of the fort at Livernock l*oln». the ordinarily deserted hwulland is bright with rly- of shimmering light refrauttfil from many touts which have already Iwn pitched. The dang of halUtntlrB ..Is,.dilturbø the wnnll,,1 silence of the "b'C, and its solitude baa botn invaded by busy carpenter* engaged in erecting tho canteen, hoa- intal, anl\ other bniUingi 11\<)' to ensure the couterieiiec of tho men. In the courso of yrstoriUy a worliug party, drawn from tho corps, arrived on the Rround, and pio. iwU'd forthwith in the task of forming the camp. These men Are to be (Mid ..t the rat" of ;is. a iUy, and they have selected to assist in carrying out the preli- linary arrangements in consequence of their ac- laintlU1(' with the duties they uro called upon to rform. In addition to their pay, rations will bo orved out to them, and they will sleep under I (''f&I during the week. The o-et from the I Cvi^menoemont has been very popular, and the m )h' l\l"iocw cflorta have been made by tfcf mentv'iW^ to maJce tb' Is, per? feet SIIS.' %•» and ms ""0 with eaoh other in t*h, Pi?it, an1 It is coni'douily jMPfod that the roU'O.tll will be answt. A lu«ge proportion of allranks- Swansea and Briton Farry will send up a sb.5tan tial contingent, and it is satisfactory to bear that emplon in those distrietl hayo oometoa detor- initiation tht auch of their men all are in the artillery corps shall havo the longest possible leave of absence granted to them, in order that the bit teries may be efficiently served, and that they miy have the most ample opportunity for drill. It is to be hoped that so salutary an example will be fol- lowed wherever practicable in Cardiff, and that the volunteers will receive ample encour- agement at the hands of the public whom they serve. The canteen bids fair to be a most commodious structure, and the comfort of tho men and visitors to the camp will be studiously considered in connec- tion with its internal arrangements. The establish- ment has been judiciously entrusted to the manage- ment of Sergeant Watson, who also has charge of the fort, and as the gallant artillerymanhashad con- siderable experience, and is most obliging and cour- tecus in his demeanour, the appointment cannot fail to give general satiefaction. Good beer will, I understand, be retailed at from threepenca to fourptnee a quart, and other refreshments may be procured at a moderate C08. No beer will be sold until noon, and spirits cannot be obtained until the evening. A committee of ottioers will keep a watchful eye on the place, and drllnkenuesa or undue levity will be promptly checked* The hcspital will also be carefully fitted up, and medical advice be readily available at any hour of the doy or night. The sanitary arrangements are excellent, and, when perfected, are likely to prove in e\ ery respect all that could be desired- Indeed, the most cnlightend efforts will be made to preserve the health of the men, and to protect them froTE the fleets of miasmath agencies and a polluted atmosphere. On Friday next packages of clothes and other camp necessaries enumerated iu the stand- ing ordeis, must ba deposi ed at the Drill- hall, Cardiff, from wheDC they will be transported to Live-nock, free of cmt, The necessity of making up these parcels as neatly as possible, ::ll of writing tho name and battery of the owner upon them in perfectly.legible charac- ten, will be obvious to all concerned, I rny licve mention that. gratuity will be prvid to each non commissioned officer and. gunner who is four successive days in camp, ex- clusive of Sundays. Battery sergeants-major will receive three shillings; sergeants and bandsmen, corporals and bombardiers, two shillings; and gunners and trumpeters, eighteen- pence a day, baciles rations, the nature of which, and the hours of issue, I fully set forth in my last letter. It has been resolved to obtain the best quality of meat and bread which the market can supply, and the whole of the food will be rigidly inspected on delivery, by the quartermaster, and on its issue by the subaltern of the day. The brigade, I am informed, will muster at the Drill-hall next Saturday afternoon, and march to the pier-head, where they will embark on board steam- boats and be conveyed to Lavernock. Small boats will be provided for the transport of the men from the larger vessels to the shore. On Sunday, divine service will either be celebrated in the camp, or the brigade will march to Penarth Church. So far as I can learn at present, however, no definite decision has been arrived at upon the point. The men will take with them two thirty-two pounder garrison guns, one sixty-four pounder field gun, and two forty-pounder Armstrong breech-loading ride guns. In addition to these tho corps will practice with the 1 i,; guns, mounted on MoncriefF carriages, in the fort, and carbine exercise will alSJ take place. The county prize will be shot for, and athletic sporh- iricltulii:^ running and walking matches, hurdle race., and other games have bsen arranged for. The band, under the accomplished band-master, lIlr. Davis, will play at various hours of the day, ar.d every evening at the officbre mess. On Thursday of n :xt week cay the inspec- tion will take place, and it is of the utmost moment that both voluuteers and employers ahould bear in mind the fact that if two thirds of the members are not present on the occasion, the Go- vernment capitation grant will be lost to the brigade, and the expenses for the year be thereby greatly augmented* It will be the paramount duty of every man, therefore, to make an effort to put in an appearance on that day. With a view to the accommodation of those who may be unable to reo main in camp during the whvle week, I understand that a steamboat willleavo the docks about five o'clock every evening for Lavernock, and return by nine o'clock the next morning. Volunteers, who cannot obtain leave of absence for tho seven days, > lay therefore attend morning and evening parade, 'vithout neleoting their business duties at Cardiff. it is, however, to be earnestly hoped that only a fw will be compelled to have recourse to this expe- tiient for keeping up the nominal efficiency of the orpS. In connection with this matter it may be wi«U to state that camp batteries will be formed, but that thfclr number must depend entirely uPm the strength of the muster. With fine weather, the health and happiness of our citizen-soldiers will doubtless be ensured. Captain Almond has been appointed Quarter-Master, and in tie circimstanoe a guarantee exists that nothing will be Uft undone whH, can contribute to the material welfare and comtort of the men. Large numbers of visitors from all parts of the locality,, may be expected during the week, and many officers of eminene3 and personages of rank will probably be present at tho inspection. cue will be taken to prevent the ohtfllsioll of undesirable persons into the camp, and admission can only be ohtaiced by tickets, which, as I mentioned in my lalt, will be issued at sixpence each. In the course of two or three days, the encampment will begin to sssame an orderly and regular appearance, and chaos will give place & harmony and method. In my next letter, therefore, I hope to glvu you some nation of tie aspect ot the camp, now growing ra- pidly into existence beneath the shadow 01 the fort at l avernock.
