I JEWISH MEAT.,
I JEWISH MEAT., Heated Incident in Swansea Committee. At the Swansea Health Committee on Tuesday, Mr. Gladstone Davies, the vete- rinary inspector, expressed the view that there was not sufficient: material in Swan- sea to justify the setting up of classes in meat inspection for inspectors. Dr. Stephens suggested that the know- ledge of that phrase would be an addi- tional qualification. Mr. Gladstone Davies: A little know, ledge is a dangerous thing. Dr. Stephens replied that this was a re- flection on the body which granted the diploma, and asked what became of" the meat that the Jewish rabbi condemned as tubercular. Mr. Gladstone Davies: I don't think be knows it. Dr. Stephens: Come now, I cannot ac- cept that. *I am told that the meat the Jewish Kabbi condemns is bought by the Gentiles. Mr. Gladstone Davies; That is abso- lutely untrue. Replying to Ald. Owen, Mr. Gladstone Davies said he -;vo.,s quite satisfied with the care taken in meat at the slaughter- house. It was explained that no obstacle was put in the way of inspectors gaining further knowledge. The matter then dropped.
I IDIPHTHERIA.
I DIPHTHERIA. II Mere Prevalent Than Ten Years Ago. Dr Evans (the Medico 1 Officer of Health) told the fcwansea Health Committee en Tuesday tlvit the figures for diphtheria simwed that the disease was more preva- lent this year than ten years ago. He could not attribute this to anything, and the cases at present reported were scat- tered ..o'nr the area, and not confined to one particular district. 3fr J. J. Jones asked if milk taken out of cold storage had anything to do with it. Dr. Evans said that sour milk could be seized in the cold stores, but so far as the diphtheria germ was concerned he did not think any purpose would be .served by a bacteriological examination of tt. The matter then drop:>ed.
::r. MARLEY SArSON.I
::r. MARLEY SArSON. Vice-Chairman of Pembroke-; shire Sessions. Pembrokeshire Midsummer Quarter Ses- sions were held at Haverfordwest on Tuesday, Viscount St. David's presiding m the absence of the chairman (Sir Charles E. G. Philipps, Bart.). A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs. Pugh- Evans, of Carmarthen, the sister of the late Dr. Henry Owen, of Poyston, Haver- fordwest, vice-chairman of the Quarter Sessions. Mr. Mariay Samson was ap- pointed vice-chairman of the court in succession to Dr. Owen. In returning thanks, Mr. Mariay Sam- son that by a strange coincidence it vas, 25 years ago that day at that court he held his first brief. Mr. Henry Allen vrn then chairman, and he liked to look back on the encouragement that nlQt gonial and kindly man gave him. Mr. W, Clark Williams, barrister, Swan- sea, on behalf of the bar, tendered con- gr-atulations to Mr. Mariay Samson on his appointment.
DONKEY'S BREAKFAST
DONKEY'S BREAKFAST Sailors' Home and Sale of Straw Beds. An interesting discussion took place at the Swansea Health Committee, Coun- cillor David Williams presiding, on Tues- day, arising out of a report from the com- mittee's officials to the effect that the Swansea Sailors' Home was infringing one of the bye-laws by supplying sea going sailors with what was known as don- keys' breakfast," i.e., beds of straw. The bye-law referred to enacted that no boarding honse keeper could trade as a seller of clothing, liquor, or any other goods tc, sailors. Mr. Brunt, tho superintendent of the Swansea; Sailors' Home, appeared before the committee, and admitted that don- keys' breakfasts were sold to seagoing sailors, a profit of 2d. being made on each sale, this profit going to the co-IT-ers of the Home. He personally made no profit. He contended that when a sailor went to sea. ou a Sunday or when shops were closed he (the sailor) could only have a bed from the jailors' Home. The Home only supplied the beds. The Chairman explained to Mr. Brunt that the law was definitely laid down to t.he effect that a licen should not be granted to boarding house keepers who were also traders. If the committee were going to allow it in one case, they would have to allow it in the other cases. Mr. Brunt said that this was only in effect a ca>Ð of someone beinjj so unkind as to report him. The Chairman said that the matter was reported by the inspectors, and not by a tradesman. After further discussion, it was decided to enforce the bye-law and to write to the Secretary of the Sailors' Home drawing his attention to the fact.

IAPPEAL TO THE COUNCILI
I APPEAL TO THE COUNCIL I I To the Editor. I Sir,—While there are eo many appeals made to-day in your most valuable paper, may I appeal through it also OIl behalt of the inhabitants of Pentreehwyth and Bonyinaen and CWlU that the Council will awake to the great need of the bridge across the river. and the flams. Wo shall bo having the same old song in the coming election again. Like the cuckoo, the same song every year. I think it is full time for us to have that promise fulfilled. They perhaps we should be able to have the King or the Prince of to make a visit up to see the sights of Bonymaen; but of course, as it is now, you do not want to show him how we are neglected up here. If there is nothing done shortly, we shall be rising steam, and driving into the Council for all we are worth; and goodness knows what will happen.— Yours, etc.. I Looking for a Move.. I
