j" KILWCH AND OL^EN." I An Old Welsh LOlle Story at the Cymrodorioa. 1 A very instructive and interesting lecture was delivered on Tuesday even- 1 ing before the Swansea Cynmxlarion Society by the Rev. Eurof Waiiers, M.A., B.D.. on "An Old Welsh Love Story." The chair was taken by the | Weish veteran, Mr. Charles Davies. I It boon transpired that, the old Welsh love story was none other than the Welsh romantic fairy taio "Kilwch and Olwen," pronounced by authorities to be the finest of its kind outside the "Arabian Nights." The lectui-er pro- ceeded to discuss its place in Ancient j Welsh literature, and selections were read as examples of the tine prose. Quoting from Renan, he said, "It repre- j sents for us the Cymric conception in all its purity, before it had been modi- tied bv tho introdetioQ of any foreign lied by In closing the lecturer of clement. medteval Welsh literature were brought out in "Kilwch and Olwen." Mr. Dan Morgan favoured the audi- ence with a topical song, and at the close a vote of thanks to the lecturer was passed.

She was stooping down to pick up a costume when 4ollicuilia came be- hind her and kissed her. This person she identified as the deiendant; fc she saw him leaving the .stage as quickly as lie could. Her husband was not near at the time. On Christmas Day com- J piamant went to Haggar's living van in search of her husband. She knocked at the door, which the defendant opne¿- He asked her to come inside, but ene re- pikxi, 'No, will not.' She had not told her husband of the kissing incident. De- rendaat then caught her arms pulled her inside and locked the door. Her husband was in the van at thc- tii-ne. A! considerable amount of horseplay fol-! lowed, the complainant being pushed into a couch by the defendant and the < operator. An attempt was iiso ma-de to force her to drink some brandy. The husband, sa.id Mr. Hayes, treated this as horseplay. In the Dressing Room. Speaking of the alleged assault, Mr. ) X ayes said the complainant on Boxing Day went down to the Palace to get a tin of salmon from her baske She j went into the dressing-room, and as slic 1 was opening tho basket the defendant j eaiue behind her, and half-an-hour's struggle ensued. She screamed, but railed to make herself heard. The fol- i lowing Saturday she left Pontardulais with her husband, and on the following Saturday told him of what had taken place. The prosecutor gave evidence to this affect, adding that after the alleged as- sault. Mr. Haggar had said he would put things right on Saturday. Cross-examined by Mr. Harris, the witness said she was not aware that there was anyone else on the stage when the defendant had kissed her on the 24th. Mr. Harris: Have you ever been kissed in this way before?—No. Were you annoyed?—I should think I was. Then why did you not tell ydur hus- band?—Do you think I would cast away piv best friend because a man kissed meP iour engagement was only for a week?—Yes, but I did not want my husband to cause trouble. Nothing occurred on Xmas Day that you can complain of?—No. What did your husband say when Mr. Haggar tried to force you on the couch? —Nothing. Did he see him trying to force you to take brandy?—Yes, but my husband, .v. )-)tit riv Jiusbaii d like myself, thought there was nothing wrong. I put it to you that you were not in the van on this date?—I was. Was it not a Saturday morning that this brandy incident took place?—No, it was Thursday. Complainant in Tears. At this juncture the complainant burst into tears, and left the court ac- companied by Sister Spencer. The husband was then called. Thomas Heustock confirmed his wife's story as to the brandy incident, and said it was not until they reached Pon- tardulais that his wife. iiiade a com- plaint to him about the defendant. Answering Mr. Harris, the witness said he had sent a. postcard to the de- fendant telling him he was no gentle- man. This was when he heard that Mr. Haggar had kissed her on the stage. With regard to the fact that Mr. Ha-ggar had forced your wife to drink brandy, did you thought there was no bad meaning in it. T,tc, witness further questioned said the brandy was neat, and he did not do anything. His memory was failing on account of the fact that lie was per- forming tricks which were unbearable. The complainant returned to court, and her cross-examination was re- sumed The Brandy Incident. f Further questions were put beaming on the interview which took place in the van when the brandy incident: oeurred. The witness ap]>earod a. little confused and Mr. Harris said It is no good you getting angry Mrs. Hen- stock. You must answer my ques- tions. Do you suggest that Mr. Haw.ir re- moved these lamps while vou struggled with him? — Yes, I struggled IIntil I became weak- He was stronger than me and mastered me. His left arm was around me. Thomas: When you Ray this silegcd assault took place, could your hear the yiolin. the children's voices, and the piano?—Yes. Mr. Harris. Could you bear the violin ?-Yes, it was placing its hardest. Mr. Harris: There was no violin in the hall at the time in question. Mr. Jenkin Jones: You can prove that directly. Mr. Harris: Did the audience enter the hall in the locality of the dressing- room?—No. You have already told us your hus- band was angry when you had romped and played with Haggar in the van.P- Yes, he spoke to me about it. When you returned after the dress- illiz room incident, what did you say to your husband?.—He said: "Y ou are late?" and I ivplied that there had been a crowd at the hall. I went up stairs, and told him nothing of what had occurred. What did yon think Mr. Haggar meivnt whefci heta-id he would see [ljni2.S ri¡.hr I,ll Saturday ?—I did not know, and I don't care, hut if he had offered me anything 1 would not have it. Did you see him C.L, Saturday ?—N o, I did not. There was no reason why you should not have told your husband of what • had occurred. I did not tell him bc- cause he was the- only friend I had in the world. The court adjourned for lunch, and 2 o'clock the hearing was resumed. Defendant's UctiiaL "J am not guilty," said the defen- dam, when charged by the court. Mr. Harris said his client was a youug man at the threshold of his career. His father was a wealthy man, and important as is an unblemish character to every man, it was specially import-ant that the defendant should have one in order that he could hold the licences of places of amusement. Henry Haggar was then called. He denied that he "a.s the proprietor of the picture hall mentioned. He was tlu3 manager, but the license of the hail was in his name. He had not. kissed tha complainant as hrd been alleged. To get on the stage, lie explained, 11 j was necessary to pass a man named j Davies, and when the pictures were showing there v.as a strong light on the stage. On Xmas Day there was an afternoon performance, at which the complainant and her husband appeared. Be had told them ihey would not be re- quired for the night perfornianc» There were three girls in the room at the j tim. "forcing t-)i,an( i v The witness admitted "forcing brandy do?n her throat by the content of her husband." On the Saturday morning -N-ir, Henstock came into his van and j had some whisky. "We offered Mrs, i Henstock some brandy. She refused, and her husband said, Make her take it He then applied the bottle to her mouth. Some she drank and some went (illwill her neck. He had no wrong in-j tention, and he had done it in a jocular manner. There were three of his friends in the room at the time. Mr. Harris: Is the charge which has been made against, you true ?-Ahso- lutel; false. By Mr. Xoves: Do you mean to tell j the magistrates that even in the pre- senCe of her husband you forced neat brandy down a young girl's throat ?—I did it as a joke in a jocular manner. Do you consider, after saying that, that you are a fit person to manage a 'picture hall?—Yes, 1 do. "Not Usuaí¡ bui-" I I I Jn this your usuat kind ot conduct ] when a girl comes to perform at your theatre ?—It is not usual, but it some- j times happens. j Have you ever seen the complainant crossing the stage to get to her dress- ing room ?—No. Has she ever tried to get anything out of yon F- Xo. i Can you suggest any motive to ex- j plain the story of this girl?—Blackmail; with the intention of obtaining money under false pretences.
