I AGRICULTURAL NOTES.
I AGRICULTURAL NOTES. I (From the 11 Waekiv .114.& I Writtsk Expekbslt bt F/klat Don, Fim. I THE HOLKBR bALE OF SHORTHORNS. t nothing has contribnted so grsatly to the prosperity of British sgrioultnrs aa the ekilllODd attention bestowed upon the breeding of the animals of the farm. In no country in the world is the live stock so uniformly good. Foreign countries and our own colonies for many years bave been extensive purchasers of our most valuable breeding animals. So many hundreds of the best mares, aliks for hunting purposee and for heavy draught, are exported that dealers now fail to find sufficient supplies in Yorkshire, Ireland, er Wales, and havs to draw lsrgely from Germany, Bussis, and even from America. In cattle Great Brits in maintains equal if not greater pre-eminence. Mr. M'Combie's Polled Angus secured the premier priio at this year's Pans International Exhibition for the best cattle group. But in improving the general cattle stock of the oountry, shorthorns have exerted the most important and extendsd influence. They have developed that early matu- rity and rapid growth of first-class beef, eoono- ImÙlinr food, and enabling the breeder and feeder more rapidly to turn their money. With proper seleo tion they have produced those big} bountiful milk '"u" nwuu uii IDe Dell aamø8. uney nave sno- oessfnlly mated with almost every home and foreign breed. These shorthorns, so called to die. tinguish them from the longhorns, which in the early part of the century prevailed throughout the Midland and southern counties of England, were early cultivated in Durham, hence one of their names; whilat some of the earliest, coming from ths valley of the Tees, give one of the synonymous titles of Teeswater. The breed, which has been so advantageous to farmers, and afforded so much pleasure to so many amateurs, bad it. foundatima upwards of a hundred years Ago, when the brothers CoUings collected the best Teeawater cattle, mated them with care and jadg. ment, leCured shapely style, oompaotncu, and uniform character, with such suoctss that at Charles Collings's sale in 1810, the bull Comet realised 1,000 guineas, and two cows upwards of 400 guineas each, From the earlier stocks different families were derived on which partioular breedors impressed something of their own type and stylo. Hence bayearimen the deBtruotivo tribes of Bates, U j;th and Knightley. Still steadily increased the tiste for the red, whits, and roan;" in Groat Britain and Ireland there are now upwards ef are hundred head in which the pedigree of the animals is duly re- corded. Her Majesty the Queen and the Prince of Wales are breeders and sxhibitors of shorthorns. For superintending the collection and publication of the pedigrees of the cittle and otherwise forwarding the interests of breeders, the Shorthorn Society was a few years ago founded, and numbers upwvds of a thousand members. By private sale or publio aution, two or three thousand pedigreed shorthorns are annually disposed of, sometimes attaining an average of several hundred pounds. America, years ago, took bulls of Duohess blood at 1,000 guineas, and some of their deeoendants have been reimported at more thaa twioe that amount, Australia imported Master Butterfly for 1,200 guineas, and more reoently has bought good specimens of the best families at high figures; and still larger consignments will be sent to the island continent, whenever the parts, which have been closed for four years, from the groundless fear of introducing disease, are again reopened. Wednesday, the lith of September, will long be regarded as a shorthorn red-letter day. An aristo- cratic company, nearly" thousand strong, 18. sembled that morning at the Duke of Devonshire's pleasant retreat at Holker in Moreoambe Bay, when Mr. Stafford sold 18 cows and heifers, and 12 bulls, bred by his Grace's able manager, Mr. Drewry. Four sales had previously been held at Holker; the first, twenty.one year, ago, the last in lbTl, when forty-three animal8 made a hand- some average of M 13m. 5d. But, notwithstand- ing the dulness of trade, and scarcity of money, the present dispersion brought still more enoouraging results.' N ine of Wedneaday's Iota belonged to that renowned Oxford tribe, shown by lIt. Batee at the first royal meeting at Oxford in 1839, cultivated by various celebrated breeders, notably Lord Ducie, who, at his Tortworth sale in 1853, msde an avenge of £ 238 for five Oxfords. Bnt their value has steadily advanced, and at Holker last week six onws and heifers made an average of JB1,767 12s. 6d., and three young bulls, one a six montha. oalf, brought C4,0k)a. Pro. minent amongst theee bovine aristocrats was the three-year-cld Baroness, Oxford 5th, bought by Mr. M'lntosh, of Havering Park, Essex, for 2,660 guineas, the highset figure of the day, and the highest price ever given for a shorthorn at a publio sals. Mr. M'Cullocb, of Australia, who, during the last few months, has been culling some of the choicest specimens of the crack sales, gave 2,100 guineas for a six-year old Grand Duchess of Oxford. CHORAL Thanksgiving FES-I…
CHORAL Thanksgiving FES-I TIVAL AT NSATH. t i Or Thursday one of ths most snoesssful musical r .stivals, perhapsever held at Neath, took place at St. David's Cnurch, the sacred edifies bstug densely crowded by nearly 2,000 persons, bundrsds also bsing unabls to obtain admisaion even at all early hour before the evening festival commenced. The usual harvest thanksgiving servioee, annually held at this church, havs during the past four years been 01 a spc-cial character, the principal choirs of the district, with representatives from other choir, in the deanery, uniting, and thus giving the urvima a choral festival feature. The feetival on Tbureday waa a thanksgiving in acknowledgment of the oleasings of harvest and peace, the choirs taking part in the servioe being St. David's, Neath, St. Mary's, Aberavon, St. Clement's, Briton Ferry, Baglan Church, Melyn- crytban, Episcopal, and Cwmavoo Church, with sections from St. Thomas'?, Llauthit, Tonna, and other placee, tbe number of voicee forming tbe united cboir being nearly 4W. The maoii had been "ciay arranged and printed for the ocoa- licn; Gou' hament anthem, "I will magnify sicn; being malsew for the evening service, which was, it .hould be mentioned, the prim. cipal choir gathering of the festival. The execution of the musio reflected the highest credit upon the respective choir-masters of each body of vocalists, the general precision, time, and eicellent rendering of the servioe throughout being remarkably correct and free from unsteadiness, oonaidsring the large boiy of voices and their widely ssparatsd situations in regard to the organ and ths chancel choristers. Ths Bev. J. P.Hn?het. cupied the pulpit in the morning, and the Bev. J. C. Llewellyn, vicar of Pontypool, in the even- ing. The Bev. Canon Fishbourms, of r-Un^ir Cathsdral, intoned the servioe, Jti. A. U. Strove presiding at the organ. Collections were made on behalf ot the Ll&ndaff Church Extension Society, but as the thsnks- giving services will be continued throughout the week at the vsrious churches in the parish, the amount of the general sollsotions is not knows. The Great Western Bailway Company obligingly ran special trains, and the tramway lssses sleo kindly made every possible aooommodatioo for the oee"l" b ft trm?-. Our brief notice .Id be brllietetra;W:t ':í'= to the costly, elaborate, and unique dsoorations of the interior of the churoh, which was literally a "Pitradies of God's bright flowers and fruits." Apart from the artistio eubsllishments which earnest hands, though few, had scattered broadcast over every 'nut. poiD\' Hood the chancel extended a broad band of gold trellised blno work, bearing the wOlds, Thou omwuest theyeM with Thy )foodneM; Thou vwittat the t':dMi;:¿lar:d;t: worked in mimbou ohMch text.
