A MONTH FOIl ASSAULTING THE POLICE AT CADOXTON. On Monday last, at Penarth Police-court—before Mr J. S. Bachelor and Major Thornley—William Gibson, a burly sailor, was charged on remand with being drunk and assaulting the police at Cadoxton-Barry on Thursday evening last. P.C. Griffith Williams (58) said he was called to No. 11, Holmes-street, Cadoxton, to remove the prisoner, who was behaving like a madman. Prisoner sprang at him and struck and kicked him repeatedly. He (the officer) had been much injured about the leg, which had since been bandaged. — Edward Stringer, lodging-house- keeper, gave evidence in support of the police, and the prisoner, who said his back was black and tIue" with bruises, the result of kicks received during the scuffle, was sentenced to a month's hard labour without the option of a fine.

original goetrB- APRIL. Smiling, frowning, often weeping, And by heavy rain-tears steeping Open plain, and sheltered hollow, Verdant pasture, fecund fallow. Oft in shining mist enshrouded, Rarely 'neatii a sky unclouded, ) But with rain and sunshine mingled, Both with vital fervour kindled. Oft with angry gusts attending, Which from leaf and flower buds rending Bonds placental, they the way Open thus for flower and spray. So doth April come and bring, On her pathway, charming Spring. Spring, which comes to re-imbue Wasted vigour, and renew Dreary Nature's frame and face, Winter's aspect to efface Clothe with verdure tree and field, Flowers to ope-and fragrance yield- Fill with song the wood and grove, Burdened with domestic love, Bringing, in her train along, Light and love and hope and song. Conscious of her coming on, Birds their brightest plumage don, And in loudest notes express Their absorbing happiness. April brings the callow brood Of the rookery in the wood. Of the throstle, blackbird, thrush, Deftly hid in tree and bush. April bids the swallows come, From their distant second home And the cuckoo, fond of fame, Ever shouting his own name Heralding his safe return, From his wintery sojourn, Now the gorgeous humble-bee Gains his dashing liberty: Lays his tribute on the flowers. And their nectar quick devours. May be, that with him to vie, Comes an early butterfly Earnest of a race to be Chief in Nature's galaxy. Hovering o'er the lake and stream, Insects in their myriads team. Tempt the wary trout to leap, Make the darting swallows sweep Up and down the watery way, Capturing their tiny prey. Now the hedgehog, dormouse, snake. From their hybernation wake. And the lizard, field-mouse, shrew, Their domestic life renew. Nature through her humblest ranks, In the hedgerows, in the banks, In the limpid brooks and lakes, To the call of April wakes. At her coming, lo the frog Croaks his welcome from the bog. Raindrops, falling in the pond, Make the water newts respond— Things which leap, or crawl, or creep. Or, like chrysalises, sleep. Wake. and rise. and live again In sweet April's genial reign. Hail! sweet April, mild and good, Though thou be of fickle mood, Which MAKES captious cynics say— Doubtful as an April day." Well we know thy genial power, Both of sunshine and of shower Know thy cominsr is to bless With new life and happiness, And that when thou goest away, Thou wilt leave us pleasant May. T.S.S.
, I THE "BARRY" COWL AND .J....L.L".…
THE "BARRY" COWL AND .J.L.L .1. VENTILATOR. USEFUL INVENTION BY AN ENTERPRISING CADOXTON TRADESMAN. I Mr J. Phillips (Messrs Phillips and Cornp a ironmongers, of Cadoxton and Barry Dock), has again been successtul in exercising his inventive powers in useful mechanism, the contrivance this time taking the form of an ingeniously constructed chimney cowl and ventilator happily named after the Barry district. The Barry cowl and ve&TI? lator has been brought to a state of efficiency tfnd usefulness after much care and painstaking, and is calculated to eclipse kindred inventions now in use. Referring to the Barry, Ilardwarcman, a prominent trade paper, says numerous chimney cowls and ventilators are on the market, some of which are fairly successful in achieving the objects for which they are constructed. Messrs J. Phillips and Company, of Cadoxton-Barry, have however, after lengthened experiments, introduced an improvement in a cowl and ventilator, known as the Barry," which they claim to have triumphed where all others have failed. By reference to the sectional illustration, it will be seen that in the centre of the cowl a specially-constructed trough, with vertical louvres, is placed, and this, coupled with the side draught chambers, creites a very strong up-draught, by which not cn!y are fierce winds resisted, but also the egress of the smoke is assisted. The" Barry" is a powerful exhaust ventilator, accelerating, as it does. an up-current, which is so requisite in sluggish chimneys. Messrs Phillips and Company's B;.rry cowl has also the advantage of being easy to sweep, there 1 being no obstruction to the free use of the sweep's brush. Made of sheet steel, riveted and galvanized, it is a strong and durable cowl; a>id, judging theoretically upon the novel constructive design, we should say that it is admirab y suited to its purpose. The invention is provisioually protected, and a patent has been applied for.
IREV. HUGH PRICE HUGHES IAT…
I REV. HUGH PRICE HUGHES I AT BARRY. On Sunday evening last divine service was con- ducted at the Market Hall, Barry, by the Rev Hugh Price Hughes, of Lendon, the popular Wesleyan preacher. The hall was filled to its utmost capacity, there being over eight hundred persons present. The rev. gentleman, who said it was with much pain and difficulty that he fulfilled that appointment, as he was suffering from extreme nervous exhaustion, delivered an eloquent and im- pressive discourse, his remarks being listened to with profound attention. The Rev Hugh Price Hughes was supported by the Rev H. Graham Payn, pastor of the Wesleyan Church, Barry; Mr John Cory, J.P., Porthkerry Mr J. Lowdon, J.P., Barry Mr D. T. Alexander, Bryneithen; Mrs Hugh Price Hughes, Mrs Inglis, Dr Lloyd Edwards, Mr B. Lewis, Cadoxton, &c. A collection was taken in aid of the trust fund of Barry Wesleyan Chapel, there remaining a debt of A 150.
AN ALLEGED MEAN THEFT AT BARRY…
AN ALLEGED MEAN THEFT AT BARRY DOCK. At Penarth Police-court on Monday last—before Mr J. S. Bachelor (chairman) and Major Thornley -Alexander Morgan, a young man employed as rigger at Barry Dock, was placed in the dock charged with stealing a half-sovereign, belonging to a mate named George Cole, at Culley's Hotel on Saturday evening. The theft was a mean one. Prosecutor and the accused, who were mates, were drinking together, Morgan paying for the half-pints and during their stay in the vaults Morgan was alleged to have deliberately stolen the coin, and in going he ran away in the direction of the docks, but was pursued by what was described as a mob," and arrested by Dock- constable C. Gill, who, with Barman Soveridge, gave corroborative evidence. Police-constable Wm. Smith, who received prisoner into custody, was also examined, and prisoner said it was all a drunken spree.-The Bench dismissed the case, giving the accused the benefit of a doubt.
"IT TOUCHES THE SPOT."
"IT TOUCHES THE SPOT." Aye, that is what HOMOCEA" does. And doe* it quickly, too-whether it's a toothache or neuralgia., with all their shooting pains, or ECZEMA; with its painful and distressing irritation—or pRes, that make thousands of lives wretched. Rheuma- tism in the joints or muscles has been cured even of rears' standing—while for cuts, burns, and bruises it's far, very far, ahead of any ointment that has ever been put before the public. LORD CARRICK says HOMOCEA cured him of bleeding piles, when all else failed that he gave some to a labourer who was lamed by a stone falling upon him, whom it cured. A woman had a pain I in the elbow and could not bend it for a year, and I it cured her, and another used it for scurvy on her leg, and it was doing her good—one letter oloses from him with the words, It is the most wonderful stuff that I ever came across." LORD COMBERMERE says HOMOCEA. did him more good than any embrocation he had ever used for rheumatism. TESTIMONIAL I FROM THE GREAT AFRICAN EXPLORER, HENRY M. STANLEY. Whitehall, London. "Dear Rir,-Your oint- ment, called HOMOCEA, was found to be the most sooth- ing and efficacious unguent that I could possibly have for my fractured limb, as it seems to retain longer than 'any other, that oleaginous- ness so requisite for perfect and efficient massage. The fault of embrocations, gene- rally, IS that they harden and require warmth, where- as yours, besides being particularly aromatic. is as soft AS oil, and almost instaiit;Y mollifying in the case of severe inflammation.— iours faithfully, HENRY M. STANLEY." Remember that HCOMOCEA. subdues inflammation, and allays irritation almost SS soon as uppJieci. All wholesale houses stoc;, HOIICSEA. It MM be obtained from Chemists and others at Is.
