————a——» mm'mwmiamwmm—————— LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. "THE HOME SECRETARY" AT CAR- DIFF THEATRE ROYAL. "Pobtxcal principles should be like chain armour—strong-, but flexible—a protection, tut not an impediment." This is erne of the many caustic, cynical remarks that abound in Mr. R. C. Carton's latest play, "The Home Seore- tary," produced at the Theatre Royai on Mon. day evening. The dialogue is sometimes brilliant, a.nd often contains an epigram that rsn inds one of an author who is now without the pale of society. But of dramatic situation there is surprisingly little in the play. "Dun- can Trendel," "the Home Secretary," is an advanced democrat, who, fortunately or un- fortunately, is married to a woman whose political principles are strongly compounded of honesty and! Socialism. This unique com- bination ultimately drives their marriage through three stages—"doubt, recrimination, estrangement." The husband and wife go their different ways; eventually they realise their folly, and re-unite. That is the plot, disen- cumbered of its pdlitical verbiage. To the man of the world and to the politkial partisan "The Home Secretary" affords a very pleasant evening's amusement, but, regarded1 as a dra-ma pure and simple, Mr. Carton has net repeated the suoeews of his "'Liberty Hall." Miss Hall Caine's "Rhoda Trendel" outrivals her recent famous portrayal of "Dulcie Larondie." She invests the character with » wealth of womanly charm, of subdued pathos, and artistic charac- terisa.tion. Mr. Harry iStia-nford is both manly and impressive in the part of "Duncan Trendel," and' three fine character studies are ocunt-nbutsd by Messrs. Charles G-oodhari. T. W. Dunsc.omhe, and Claude Agnew. Mrs. Henry Kitts, an old Cardiff favourite, renders a fine portrayal of "Lady Clotilda." The mounting and dressing are particularly worthy of-notice. Misi Hall Caine's dresses especially are "two lovely for words." THE GRAND THEATRE, Haidie and Von Leer's "The Plunger" was itaged at the Grand Theatre on Monday a veiling, and the popular old drama was produced by a well-seleoted company ,}f irtistes. The plot is well known, and its enthralling and sensational character was appre- ciated by a large audience. A feature of the piece which was productive of a deal of vpplause was the introduction into the third ict of a variety entertainment, which includes tfaraoter songs and dances, tableaux vivan ts, md cornet and posthorn solos. THE ~EMTTRES. CAPXHF?. As was orly to be expected, the Cardiff Empire was well filled on Monday night, and right royal receptions were accorded) Miss May Evans, who this week makes ,1, most (velcc-me irst. visit to Cardiff. fresit from her successful engagement for 26 weeks at the Palace Theatre, London. Mi?s Evans is a finished and most accomplished artiste, and her songs, pathetic or gay, were all rendered to perfection. Her most, successful "hit" was in the -ole of "The Shop Girl." ivtiss Eviins's jfioond song also brought down, the ho;ise. It ivaa descriptive of the bife of the "flavey. Mr. Stoll's enterprise in engaging MIPS May Evans is sure to be rewarded by bumper houses throughout the week. Among the artistes also appearing are Volti and Ray, a couple of very smart triple-bar comedians; J. H. Hnrst. who as a character comedian is one of the bvat"; the Stella Quartette of Vocalists and Dn.noers, four very clever girlfl, the Home Brothers Troupe, in » very merry sketch- ano Ada .Lonsdale, serio-comic vocalist Japa and Japo, wire per- formers; and Gaertner and Richards, musical eccentric clowac. NEWPORT. The bills at the Newport Empire are getting stranger and stronger. This week there is a great budget of talent. Spry and Austin, that r, n rusticating .couple who have so often made the house roar with laughter and applause with their tricka, are again in the programme, and met with a big reception on Monday night. Miss Daisy Wood, sister of Marie Lloyd, is in fact, as she is aptly doscrihed in mural literature, one of the bright light- of the variety stage. The fasci- nating Sisters Lena, wain relatives of Marie Lloyd (one a Rister, and another ft cousin), further exemplify t.be assumption that talent runs in families. They are very fetching dancers and duettists. The other turns inolude Pro- fessor Vox, a very clever ventriloquist; H. P. Wilson, tenor vocalist; Rosie CJpleman, come- dienne dancer Miss Daisy James, serio-comic and Denno, master of magic art. THE PANOPTICON, CARDIFF. The boards 1%.t. ihe Panopticon, Cardiff, left vacant by the departure of ihe Kentucky I\9instrels, are occupied ishis week by Htrr I'areczer's famous Prussian Choir, who bring with them a number of first-claas artistes, a r oet variedi ^eportoire. and an excellent repu- tation. The last-named was quite upheld at both peiformancee given on Monday, and. the audiences, vhich Slled Mr. Stoll's popular St. Alary-street house, were treated to p pro- gramme with which little fault could be found. The iad'ies in i\.ne choir, who possess very swtt voices, were teaHily applauded for their ren- derings of some well-selected songs and ballads, aad Herr Pareezer himself wuc most j;nteresiing in his description of scenes and views which were showp upon the screen. Turns were also given by a. troupe of speciality artistes, who contribute recitations, Tui-sical (selections, sketches, and magical illusions. ROYAL CLARENCE THEATRE, PONTY. PRIDD. Mr. Harry Bruce's company opened kere on Monday night in the farcical, musical drama A (K)night in Armour." The talented authors, Mr. Karry Bruce aDd Mr. Walter Burnot, state that the piece was written only to amuse and make yon laugh." That they have succeeded in their endeavour was demonstrated by the hearty lsngbter and applause of a numerous audience throughout the evening. An excellent cast is engaged for the production, including Mr. Harry Bruce, Mr. James Chippendale, Mr. Wilford Cheetham, Mr. Arthur Verne, and Mr. W. H. Liddy, Miss Louise Millward, Miss Norab Caronne, Miss Nellie Wallace, and Miss Lallah Davis. The candle chorus and dance by the Eden Quartette was much appreciated. W Tb> music by Mr. Peter Wilsor. and ¿,he gorgeous scenery by Mr. Nicholas Hinchy are both excel- lent, and well worthy of mention.

■nHnRMHHHMHHMMnbiMMHtannMBnHBMi NEW RAILWAY TO LONDON. IMPORTANT STATEMENT BY SIR J. J. JENKINS. It will be remembered that Sir John Jones Jenkins made one of a party of Swansea gentle- men. who visited Barry Docks one day last week. Sir John, in speaking to a "Cambria Dailv Leader" reporter of the visit, said: — "I was at Barry with the trustees and the local railway officials last week, and we saw the pier they are constructing for facilitating the Chamnel passenger traffic, which, as you know. has increased enormously of late. In this connection the Barry directors have hit upon an idea which is novel, and the carrying out of which will, I believe, be remunerative. Thev intend to issue circular tickets enabling Dassengers from the Rhondda and Cardiff, to land at any port in the Channel, and to return, if they choose, by a different route. They have chosen the Mumbles as one of their places of landing, a fiict that will materially increase the usefulness of our pier, and, of course, improve the prospect of its being a paying ':fiaceni. "Talking of Barry, Sir John, do you know if there is anything new to be said of the proposal to make a new trunk line from London to Swarsea?" "I don't know that anything 'new' can be said, but I am aware of this: that the proposal is being very seriously entertained in the eastern end of the county. Its promotion is be-ing conducted by men of position, some of whom are amongst the most astute and ener- getic capitalists in Glamorganshire." "And you really think t'here is a prospect of the scheme being carried through?" "I saw on my visit to Barry inany indi- cations of earnestness, many signs of deter- mination, and there m no doubt whatevei— not the slightest doubt—that application will shortly be made to Parliament for powers. The rpplication for powers will probably cost a 'large Mini, and a liberal proportion of that money is already in hand. "If I am not trenching too much on your affair,Sir John, would yem mand saying if you of .juty' other 8wansea. capitalists are emerestfed ii|rthe scheme?" ¡'WpH. up till quite recently my attitude has been that .,pt-.a. avmpathetio looker-on. Now, however, some other Swansea gentlemen and myself have been afked to join in the move- ment, and I shall probablv consent. I shall do so because I believe it would be greatjy to the advantage of Swansea—and^ not only of Svansea, but of the chief South Wales towns— to have another connection with London." "That will mean another big tight with the Great Wester,n Railway:" "That, doesn't trouble me inuch. Fights with them are nothing new to me. W*> have hud so many that I have become almost inured to them, and I really think they have grown to regard me as their natural enemy." "How would you foreshadow the effect of Blleh a line, Sir John?" "Well, the first. effect would, undoubtedly, be that which we have already seen since .¡1:Je opening of the Rhondda and Swansea Bay— the reduction of rates, and consequent benefit to th traders. Since our line opened, the G*eat Western fares from Briton Ferry and Port- Talbot to Swansea have been reduced, and manufacturers have had greatly improved fieight terms." "Ha.s the rcute for the proposed new line been seitled 1" I "Not yet. There are two routes suggested, and the promoters will select the better of these." "You think that the matter is one that should Clall for the coidial co-operation of all Swansea people?" "I most certainly do. The advantages of a competing line are obvious. You just in- stitute a comparison between the fares charged- by the Great Western from London to the North and from London to Swansea, and you will see what the public have to gain by this scheme." Do you consider the line would pay?" Becic'edh. In thø first place the cc.st of obtaining an Act of I'.iiiiaineivt is very much Stss now than formerly, and by the use of modern machinery and. latest applUrices rail- way* can be constructed chea.per than nhs-n the Great Western made their line. That t-ama: so we should Dot require to earn ns much as they in order to pay dividend. I think it would pay handsomely." "What do you think would be the attitude of Parliament to the project?" From my experience of Parliament, I have very little doubt that when we can show them the injustices which South Wales towns suffer, and the undeniable advantages which would accrue from this new undertaking, they would willingly grant powers." WELSH LADIES' CHOIR
WELSH LADIES' CHOIR FORTY-ONE PIECES SUNG AT ONE CONCERT. If the Royal Welsh Ladies' Choir continue all through their tour through America as they began in New York, they will make a record for hard work. They were re-called so often in one concert that ,hey sang 41 different pieces in chorus, duets, and FOIOP. This is the "New York Recorder" account of it — FroRi the mountains of old WaJes, from Cardiff, Builth, Pontypool. Llandudno, Pont- lottyn, and Rhvmney there came such glorious harmonies last night that Chickering-hali rang with applause till close upon the hour of mid- night. It was the first concert of the Royal Welsh Ladies' Choir, under the auepioea of St. David's Society. The choir sang and sang, and whether it was an old Welch tune or some olresio song from opera or concerto, or "Annie Laurie." rendered with exquisite harmony, or "Home, Sweet Home," the song eung round the world and adopted by all nations, ihe lis- teners couid not get enough, and encored again and again. It is not necessary to introduce this splendid organisation. Are not the annals of the Columbian Fair bright with its musical accomplishments and the prizes it won? The prize song, "The Spanish Gipsy," was sung last night, and the prize singer, Miss Bessie Evans, was heard, but she was only one of many worthy of generous mention, for nearly half of the choir are eisteddfodio prize-winners, and all were in good voice, and) perfect training. Madame Clara Novelln Davies conducted with her usual spirit, and solos were sung by the Misses Kathleen Evans, Annie Jenkins, Nellie Grif- fiths, Dot Prosser. Nellie Asher, Bessie Evans, Gertrude Drinkwater. Beatrice Edwards, Annie Davies, and Edith Edwards. The concert closed with "God Save the Queen." in Welsh, and thnn it was that the audience showed what it oovld do with Taffy's tongue-
PRAISE FOR CARDIFF
PRAISE FOR CARDIFF- A CASE OF SUC ESSFUL TRADE SPECIALISATION. The current number of the "Liverpool Jourral of Commerce" contains an interesting article on "Cardiff," together with a plan of the port. "The name and fame of Cardiff as a coal exporting centre," says our contem- porary, "have spread all over the civilised -world, and if ever there was a case of success- ful trade specialisation it exists in this go-ahead and energetic town, which has at length actually achieved the distinction of being about, if rot the first, port in the world for the volume of its coal export's. It is to Cardiff, then, that we must go if we wish to learn all that is to be known about the loading of coal, and so vtry important an item has this branch of our export tiade become, and, in consequence, so keen is the competition, that -t is absolutely necessary for every port which possesses faci- lities for coal loading and discharging to keep right up to data with the thousand-ajid-one time and labour saving appliances which '4 re now been brought into the business. To Car- diff, then, our representative jourqeyed, and the result of his visit was to fully confirm the most favourable anticipations." Ooular demonstration was soon given of the '•.marvellous order, quietness, and rapidity''with which the coal is transferred1 from the pit's mouth to the "hurrying" steamer. "In the great Bute system the work of coal loadting has been reduced to a science, both in the way of expedition and of freedom from breakage. The machinery and appliances It the Bute Docks p;*t every other p-rt almoet completely in the shade." After a brief description of the axtpnt of the docks, the writer continues:—"All of these things! tell well in favour of the South Wales port. as ro. poaling centre, but Cardiff is ambitious. She wishes 00 have an import trade in some w> v commensurate with her tXport, traffic, and not remaining as aft present, in something like vbe proporbion of one to ten." .A visit to Cardiff would be anything but complete (the writer goes on) without calling ar. the Dowlais Iron- works, which he spevks of m highly appre- ciative terms. Proceeding, he says that amongst the sights of Cardiff w-ere the magni- ficent flour mills of Menssre. Spillern I¡.fld Bakers (Limited) and the Cardiff Milling Com- pany (Limited*, whose mills were amongst the fin<?«t establishments of the kind in the king- dom. The handsome buildings of the latter were most advacftageorsly placed, the large deep-wa.t-.ir fronltage right on the dock giving this establishment "both importing and ax- porting facilities which are certa/inly not im- proved upon by any in the counitrf." "We left CWdiff," concludes the writer, "impressed with the sa.me idea thait we erterpd :t. a feel- ing of wonder that such an enormous coal ex- port trade can be coped with so quietly and so admirably, and so free from hftcb or trouble of any kind. In large businesses a great deal,. of course, depends on system, but just as much is dine to the personal influence and power of those at the lyod of affairs, and no one can go to Cardiff without feeling ihtllt this la.tto factor is mainly responsible for the remarkably successful administration of the port."

Says He is Cailingfor Her AN EXTRAORDINARY OCCUR- RENCE IN AMERICA Girl Goes Into a Trance at a Wake Over the Body of Her Uncle. While Miss Bemadette Demarais was attend- ing a wake over the Ixxty of her ancle, Moise St. Deiii.s, at their home in Lowell, Massar chusetts, she gave a slight cry aad fell forward with her arms outstretched over the coffin. She was then hysterical, but when one of the girls went to her assistance she threw her arms about the iatter's neck and immediately went into a cataleptic state. As her condi- tion was unchanged in the morning, she was taken heme. At this time the muscles of the limbs were so rigid that the knees could not be beni, and the arms, hanging at the sides, could not be bent at the elbows. The hands were dlinched, and not even the little lingers could be straightened, and the eyes were open wider than usual, but the eyeballs newer moved. For an hour in the afternoon the girl was conscious. Her arms and limbs sud- denly relaxed, and she began to toss about and utter wild exclamations. She saad that her uncle was calling to her from purgatory, and kept repeating the statement until she went into another trance. Her pulse is strong, though the girl has not swallowed any food since.. Mrs. Demarais is in a terrible sitate of fright. She says that before St. Denis died he warned her that something terrible would happen to the family.
DEVELOPMENT OF CARDIFF.
DEVELOPMENT OF CARDIFF. ACTIVITY OF THE BUT-B AUTHORITIES. We are enabled to state that important pro- posals having in view the development of the trade of Cardiff, both sea.wards and landwards, will be made on the part of the Bute authorities in the forthcoming session of Parliament. These proposals will embrace railway communi- cations calculated to assist materially to increase the shipments at the docks, while one of the features of the scheme, of far greater importance, will be a project for the utilisation of the West Mud in order to increase the dock accommodation, and for the extension of the low water pier, so as to make it available to three-quarter tide, and giving the greatest possible facilities: *$§ both for passenger boats and general shipping trade and the greatest-possible time for vessels entering and leaving the docks. Of course-, at present these schemes are necessarily in an unfinished state, and it is possible they may i be modified or extended as the time for deposits. inpr Bills arrives. We are enabled to state upon, < authority that the above information gives a i general outline of the proposals of the Bute. A « In connection with this matter Lord Bute spent j a busy day at Cardiff Castle on Monday. William Thomas Lewis and a number of ofchet^ ^officials connected with the estate arrived Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, and they were.) closeted with Lord Bute throughout Monday,^ and we understand the special business under. consideration appertained to the measures which! j j are about to be brought forward. It may be M mentioned in this connection that two expert |ijj engineers were present and assisted in the :1 deliberations.
