COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. LONDON, SATURDAY EVENING. In the discount market to-day, the demand for discount has been limited, but the supply of money in the open market being large, rates are easier. Subject to arrangement, the prices quoted ;o-day were as follows Bank Bills—3 months, 3i per cent; 4 months, It per cent; 6 months, 3t per cent. Trade Bills—3 months, 3§ per cent; 4 months, I per cent; 6 months, 4 to 4t per cent. On the Stock Exchange, business continues in- ictive, and the tone has been steady throughout. Although consols were weaker at the close, the price touched was not below 94^ to 94 for the iccoant, and 94k to 94.g for delivery, a fall of 1-16 in the latter. New and Reduced 3 per cents were at 92^ to 92, a fall of k. India 5 per cents were marked at 106 to 106, and the 4 per cents, 1021 to 1031 There has been a cessation of the excitement in the Foreign Stock market to-day, with reference to the all-absorbing topic, Egypt. Although dealers have been exceedingly irate at the conduct of the Government with reference to the report of Mr Cave, it is now believed that its publication will shortly be authorised. Very little reli- ance is placed in the various rumours which have been circulated, with reference to the contents of that report, but the suspension of the issue has caused considerable uneasiness, which will take some time to subside. To-day, however, there has been a fractional advance on the price of the issues of 1868 and 1873, the former rising j, and the latter J. The Khedive, the Viceroy, and the Guaranteed Loan, have not moved since last night. The demand for Turkish Securities has been limited, and values are generally quoted as last night. The 6 per cents of 1873 receded and the General Debt With the exception of a rise of 1 per cent in Russian 5 per cent of 1862 no change has occurred in the securities of the Muscovite Empire. In French, the 5 percent Rentes rose Italian 5 per cent, g; Peruvian 5 per cent, g whilst Mexican receded § and Spanish J. Argen- tine Bonds were also lower, and the securities of the other South American Republics showed a ten- dency to decrease in price. The movements in Home Railway stocks con- tinue to be favourable, but business in this department has been remarkably restricted, and very few changes have occurred. The favourable movements were an advance of in Metropolitan, J in Great Northern, A |- in Manchester, Sheffield, and L'ncoln ordinary, and J in Great Western, London and North Western, North Eastern, and South-Eastern Deferred; and a fall of in North British, and i in Caledonian, and Metropolitan District. There has been no change in United States; bonds, but Erie shares have advanced, the ordi- nary stocks rising î, and the preference. Cana- dian Railway shares continue to be dealt in at previous prices Grand Trunk 3rd preference are, however, k below the quotation of Friday night, and Great Western of Canada are also £ lower. Bank shares have met with a fair enquiry. There has been a fair demand for Anglo-Egyptian, which have been done at 21, and close at 20^ to 21! sellers, a rise of Bank of Alexandria rose to 8f Bank of Egypt closed at 35 to 37. In home banking securities, City felli-121: to 13 London and Westminster were at 63 to 64; Mid- land, Limited, 6 to 7 premium National, 74 to J7; Union of Australia, 55 to 57. Foreign mines are flat, Flagstaff falling 1, and Richmond Consolidated and Almada and Tinto Frontino and Bolivia Gold were k better, at li to 2k. As regards telegraph shares, Anglo American rose i and Direct United States, t. In reference to Egyptian Finance, the latest despatches received from Cairo state that the Khedive will authorise the publication of Mr Cave's report next week. fhe Messager de Paris states that Messrs Roths- childs, at the suggestion of Mr Disraeli, are about to interest themselves in the question of Egyp- tian Finance. With reference to Spain, according to a tele- aram from Paris, the Semaine Financier says the Spanish Minister of Finance will not even be able to pay one-third of the interest to the creditors of Spain.

THE P»)WEIL OF NAMES.
THE P»)WEIL OF NAMES. And this is the real power of names over men, says the Spectator, that when applied to conscious beings, they tend, as a rule, to make the character gravitate in the direction of the name. Names often act as promissory notes, which the bearer does all in his power to redeem at maturity. A man of science will think he is bound to shew the <3ifference between himself and a man who does not profess to be a man of science; and, not infrequently, in justifying his title to be a man or sciefice, ho will do something to render his title to other human or humane qualities which are still more important, ambiguous. A man of the world, in the same way, is very careful not to do an>thinsr that will diminish his right to be called a man of the world, and in that anxiety he may render his right to be called a man of scrupulous equity and sincerity rither doubtful. An acknowledged statesman is apt to merge private in public duties, and an acknowledged thinker to make all life subservient to the effectiveness of his thoughts. We are swayed-by pleasant names at all events-toicarcl, the qualities which those names denote, too often to the exclusion of others quite as important, so that the name tends to verify itself, and sometimes even to absorb the man into the characteristic which gives him him name. This, even more than the tendency to mislead those who do not bear, but who only use the name, is the rea- son why we ought to be so slow to give a new name con- taining definite moral associations of its own, like Em- press" or "Emperor"—which may, in the first instance mislead those who apply, and finally more or less 14 edu- cate those who bear it.
