c? Cycling. ..
c? Cycling. In another week the two great cycle shows will be opened. The King of the Belgians was recently stopped for driving a motor car at cxccssivc speed. A frequent cause of serions accidents is side- slipping. The Dunlop-Welch tyre with its non- -dipping ti-catl is the most reliable preventive. Two Leith boys were recently summoned btfor the Edinburgh Sheriff Court for stoning a bieyrlt iiul selling it to a man for 5s. One was sen ttoa reformatory, and the other was given a taste of 'lie birch. The Shows are close upon us, and although there isi no reason to suppose that they will be anything but satisfactory, the fact remains that the exhibi tors in both ca~cs will fall considerably short of last year's record. There wiil be really no new introduction worth speaking about., to be seen. although a great deal of interest is bound to be evinced in the various new and improved free wheel devices which have recently been placed upon the market. Drakes, too, will also attract a good deal of attention. The brake is an accessory which has jumped into wonderful prominence during the last year or two, and more than ever since free wheels were introduced. There will also be some interest at- taching to the motor sections. Altogether the exhibitions should be interesting, and it is doobt- fwl whether they will suffer in any respect owing to the smaller number of the exhibits. In previous years there has been really more to see than the average cyclist could take in, and he will not suffer by a little decrease in this direction. A very striking proof is afforded of the prophecy which was made in the boom to the effect that park riding was only a transient phase of the pastime. At one time Battersea Park was crowded with fashionable recruits who used the park as a cycling ground to such an extent that the right to let out cycles was offered for tender amongst the local cycle agents. Recently the lessee of the park pleaded his inability to pay even the small fee of £ 10 per annum for the sole privilege of letting out bicycles, and in this is found the coraple te confir- mation referred to. It could not be otherwise than that park cycling should only be the beginning—the nursery so to speak, preceding the proper pursuance of the pas- time in a broader and in its more legitimate man- ner. The cycle was never meant for circling and ambing up and down an enclosed stretch of good surfaced road. It was meant as a vehicle of pleasure, to take the rider out into the highways and bveways, for excursions and pleasure trips into the country, which would not otherwise be en- joyed. The cycle as a park machine was entirely out of its sphere, as would be say, a good hunter in a circus. t C. Jarrott, the well known motorist, has succeeded in covering a distance of 42 miles, 235 yards in an hour upon the Canning Town track. This is the first time that over forty miles has been covered in an hour in this country. The distance, however, is still a good way behind the actual best on record, which is the wonderful distance of 44 miles, 510 yards by Demester, one of the be.-t Parisian motorists. Jarrott used an 8 h.p single cylinder racing tricycle, while Demester used a tricvcle to which were attached two motors each of 6 h.p. Apparently the performance of the Englishman on his machine is the better one. The discussion anent the respective values of the long crnnk and high gear combination as against short crank and normal gear combination is still with we, and week after week we are treated in the cycle press, to letters from all the men who care to write on the subject, and who generally state nothing more than that either they have found the one or the other combination good for them- selves; apart from this they give but very little argument indeed as to why those using short cranks or low gears should discard them for the other combination. The matter is entirely a per- sonal one. What suits one man is agony to anot her, aud the sooner those debating on this question realize that however much they write and however much they argue they will fail to teach, the better. It is a question in which each man must decide for himself. Alplionse Bauge, the famous French middle distance paced crack, is undoubtedly the king of record breakers. lie having beaten more classic records during the past season than any other rider. His latest performance on Dunlop tyres of beating the 100 kilometres, 50 and 100 miles, world's records at one essay, stamps him as a rider of the very first order. Batiges principle aim was to regain the hour record which is now held by Stinson at 40 miles 327 yards, but he hnd to change machines just before completing the sixty minutes when he was well inside previous bests and thus missed the record. Anyway he was not disheartened, and. sticking well to his pace, soon got well ahead of all previous records beyond one hour, covering the fifty miles in the good time of 1 hour 14 mins. 5-5 3-5 sees., which is nearly two minutes better than his own previous oest. lie reached the 100 kilometre marjc in 1 hour 32 mins. 53 4-o sees., ana covered the 100 miles m the remarkable time of 2 hours 33 mins. 40 4-5 sees., which is 24 minutes inside previous record. Cycle race followers must have by this time become very familiar with the words Grand Prix," which is the title of the most important sprint races decided abroad. Nearly every foreign city has its Grand Prix," the following being a list of the winners of the most important ones during the past season:—Grand Prix de Paris, •Jacquelin Grand Prix de Florence, Tommaselli; Gravid Prix d'ltaly, Meyers; Grand Prix de Han- over, Iluber; Grand Prix de Marseilles (paced) Bouhours", Grand Prix de Paques, Eros; Grand Prix de Amiens, Louvet; Grand Prix de Nantes, Jacquelin tandem Grand Prix de Paris, Iluber, andSeidi; Grand Prix de Paris (paced), Bauge; Grand Prix eFO.Y.F", Domain Grand Prix de Copenhagen.
