CYCLING NEWS & GOSSIP. II
CYCLING NEWS & GOSSIP. II It lias been decided that the life ol a bicycle de- pends almost entirely upon the rider, an exper- ienced whi'clmaii inflicting far less wear and tear upon a machine than an inexperienced one would do. An instance of this has been given by the Irish Cyclist \ho had a remarkable case of longevity in a cycle brought under their notice. The machine in question was bought four seasons ago for grass track work, and scaled in racing trim nIbs. and for road work 2411bs. The owner found after pur- chasing the machine that he could not devote the necessary time to training, so housed the machine entirely on the road, covering well over 0000 miles per annum. This high annual mileage made over rough roads in winter and summer and extending over a space of four years, conclusively shows that with due care a machine will last very much longer than is generally supposed, for in this in- stance the machine has just been sold for XS, and is good for a lot more work. It is difficnlt to believe that anyone would be so void of sense as to ride a free wheel bicycle with- out a brake, but quite recently two cases have been reported wherein cyclists riding such machines have come to grief, one at Cardiff and the other at Abcrdare, the latter accident proving fatal. The victim was a novice, having only commenced cyc- ling this year, and yet he purchased a bicycle fitted with a free wheel and minus a brake. Within a week of the purchase, when riding out of Aberdare Park at a good rate of speed, he failed to take the curve, and not being able to stay the progress of the machine ran into a wall with such force as to cause almost instantaneous death. It is little short of madness to ride a machine so inadequate- ly equipped, while much blame rests with the seller for allowing such to go out of his hands. One of the most fashionable sports gatherings during the year is the annual race meeting at Chelmsford, which is usually attended by all the local notabilities of the country. The Lord Mayor of London and the Lady Mayoress in full state graced this year's meeting with their presence to- gether with Lord and Lady Rookwood, Lord Bishop of Colchester, Sir Walter Gilbey, and many others. Indeed the meeting is quite unlike the general run of athletic meetings as regards the class of spectators, everyone who considers himself anyone in Essex making a point of attending. The one mile cham- pionship of Essex was the moat important of the cycling events, and this was won by J. H. Bishop, A. Gregory being second and G. W. Bishop (holder) third. During the past few seasons A. S. Ingram and R. Janson have stood head and shoulders above the other tandem cracks, and on their Dunlop- tyred mount won every important contest in which they have competed, including championship events. They are now out with a challenge to any amateur combination in Great Britain. They have just recently broken the one mile unpaced tandem record made from a standing start, cover- ing the mile in lmin. 54 3-5secs. A creditable performance. One cannot help expressing surprise when hear- ing of the number of cycle dealers who have their machines stolen, that they do not exercise more precaution when letting cycles out on hire. There are many ways in which cycle stealing from agents could be prevented. Alany cycle makers, "especially those relying upon a local reputation, make a serious mistake in not looking after their customers after the actual transaction is completed. How many dealers consider their duty done when once they have sold a customer a bicycle ? The purchaser is bound to have one or two little things go wrong, and if he should be new to the pastime, would appreciate any attention or advice. Slight repairs should be done expeditiously and for one or two weeks after the purchase the machine should be brought in occasionally and well overhauled. In this way the agent will gain the confidence of his customer, and his attention and curtesy will be rewarded by introductions, and an increase in the sale of sundries and the number of repairs. The cycle agents of Vienna are complaining against the municipal pawn shops competing with them in the sale of second-hand machines, a branch of their business which is very considerable. Pawning cycles is very general on the Continent, so much so, that special rooms have had to be built in many instances to store the machines, and as many of the pledges are never reclaimed, the pawnbrokers have been obliged to sell them at the best price they can get. The machines are first thoroughly overhauled and repaired by experienced workmen before being offered for sale. Naturally the public, wishing to purchase a second hand cycle, favour the pawnbrokers, where they can get a serviceable mount at a much I lower price than cycle dealers would charge. We fully believe that the puncture demon conies in for much unmerited abuse, and provok- ing as his visitations arc, they are not so frequent as one iH led to imagine from the woeful tales told by some wheelmen. Punctures occur, of that there is no possible doubt, but they are not numerous considering the many thousands of I cyclists on the road, and if only more care were i further considerably reduced. We ftrD speaJoJl from our own experience of a pair of Dunlop- Welch roadster tyres. These tyres have been i" constant use for over two years, ridden in all weathers over every class of road and yet not once punctured. We have periodically overhauled them, extracted any flints which had become embedded in the rubber, and filling in the cuts with solution and cotton wool. A contributor to one of the London dailies has solved the vexed question of housing the London poor, and instead of the municipal authoritie spending thousands of pounds on the erection cl model dwellings, they are to devote the money to the purchase of cycles which are to be let out to working men at a low weekly charge. Under this scheme the city toiler will not only be able to live farther afield but the daily cycle journeys will improve his health and physique. Such is the proposal, attractive in its simplicity, but W are afraid, impracticable. From all quarters reports are coming in of policy activity in stopping the practice of scorching and it is very clear that a decisive movement is being made to put an end to speed riding once and for all. Heavy fines are being imposed on captured offenders and in the case of the Llendaff district, where miners have been giving a deal of trouble, the magistrate when imposing a fine of il spoke very strongly on the subject. He told them tho.t if the offence was repeated they would be imprison- ed, We are one with the police in exterminating the scorcher who disrespect the rights af pedest- rians, but we are afraid in many cases the police summon cyclists for fast riding when the roads are deserted and no one is about to be endangered- The Irish cycling press are-and apparently with good reason, too-very sore on the suspension of C. Pease, the holder of the One and Five miles N.C.U. Championships, and Robert Reynolds, the Twenty-five miles N.C.U. Champion. Seeing tlJat the actual charges made against the riders were not proven, it does seem hard that they should be de- barred from racing just in the middle of the season' when they have got themselves into thorough con- dition. It appears that the English representative argued that English sports promoters are known to offer expenses to prominent riders to compete at their meetings, and that because Pease and Re)" nolds had competed in England, they received expenses. Then the Irish representative said' give us the proof, or tell us the names of the clubs that you have suspended for offering expenses to Irish riders. No proof was offered, hence the very unsatisfactory decision in the matter. The influence of pneumatic tyres on the relative speeds of a bicycle has been shown to be very great, in fact, much greater than would be thought by those who have not investigated the matter bV actual measurements. The whole question is course one of resilience, and by experimenting with three different brands of tyres, that eminent authority, Professor Carpenter, once showed that at a pace of fourteen miles an hour the driving power Irequired by the different types of tyre5 varied as much as 18 per cent. Cyclists will thua see what an important feature resilience is in ft tyre, and when ordering should select a tyre knoWJl for this quality such as the Dunlop, which is at the top of the tree in Professor Carpenter's compu- tation. The desire for touring at holiday times a.p' parently grows stronger every year, and many of those people who used to go in for day rides, now penetrate further afield, naturally see more of the country in their extended trip. The result of this so far as hotels, waysid' inns, or even country cottages are concerned, is ver>' marked. To many hotels especially those situated on the old coach roads, cyclists have given quite s. fillip, and any way restored the fortunes of the old days. Wayside inns too which merely relied for custom upon the local inhabitants and the ordinal passers-by, have received a fillip from the touring cyclist, whilst it is most noticeable how many conn- try cottages now display to the effect that teas and refreshments are supplied. No doubt many a country working man's wife adds quite an appre" ciable increase to the weekly earnings in this Whenever possible cyclists seem naturally so t° like to take their teas at these wayside country cottages. The rush in the cycle factories is slackening down, and will shortly be over. Nearly everyoe who has thought of purchasing a, cycle for tbl season having already made up their minds one or another. The attention of the trade is now beillg turned to the matter of balance sheets. On tba whole it is generally agreed that the year has been a much more satisfactory one than its Predecessor I Bankrupts stocks have been practically cleareC out of the way, and although many very ebeal) machines have been sold, the general demand geeog to be for a cycle which is retailed at a fair The five-pound bicycle has apparently had its and this is a mutual congratulation both to ,,Ajell and the public—to the makers xvho have the est of the trade at heart, and to the public have a due regard for their own safety..
