The School Children's Christmas,
The School Children's Christmas, [T.W.B.] Amidst the sombre surroundings in- separable from a strike, and rendered more disheartening by comparison with the brightness one sees around or which one associates with the festive season from past experience, how hollow under such circumstances would be the joyous message of the Gospel for one and all at this time, when glad tidings should per- vade the air and goodwill exist between man and man. And what more perfect manifestation of this goodwill than the bright, cheery face of the happy child expectant of Santa Claus, and looking forward with rapturous joy to the jolly round of Christmas gaieties. Of course, midst time of stress, disputes, and indus- trial dislocations, domestic felicities go. What was, is not; things are not what they were, and, however anxious the mother may be to brighten her children's holiday, she is powerless with an empty cupboard and a useless purse. Thanks to the humane feelings of- those, who might well spend their Yuletide in peace and plenty at their own firesides, but who prefer to follow the Divine injunction. Feed My lambs." In Rhondda, such kindly disposed persons have not been wanting, nor have their labours been few or unappreciated. Christmas dinner of the good old type has been provided; not out of the rates, but as the outcome of the beneficent feelings of those who could and did what was necessary. On Boxing Day I had the happy privilege, of visiting some of the schools, where the sights were worth the trouble and such as to gladden one's heart, and to give a taste of the real Christmas marked by kindly actions, accompanied by honest smiles. I first visited Alaw School, where some 200 infants were busy at work on a repast of roast beef and plum pudding, to which tremendous justice was done. Here Coun- cillor J. D. Williams, J.P., of Clydach Court, the genial organiser and treasurer of the Mid-Rhondda Schools Canteen Committee, was smartly carving a huge piece of prime cut English beef. The work was heavy: the joy was great. He was assisted by Mr. Morgan, of Maesyr- haf. Mr. W. P. Nicholas, the busy Clerk and serious lawyer, had assumed a fit- ting role. he was a jolly dispenser of good things amongst the little ones, doing in his own thorough and kind- hearted way all that could be done to make the little ones right happy jguests at this regal repast. Mrs. Nicholas, who has daily administered to the wants of the children at Alaw, and Miss Nicholas, and a host of willing helpers-all of whose names I do not remember, but whose faces showed the delight they ex- perienced-were busy attending to the ,endless wants of these youngsters. At Trealaw some 600 children had a similar feast. Here Councillor D. O. Evans, who for the past few weeks has simply lived at the Trealaw School since the .feeding of the children began, was at work, coat off and sleeves up, carving until his arms ached, but his big heart never tired. He was assisted by two other gentlemen, whose names I forget. Mrs. J. D. Wil- liams, Clydach Court; Mrs. D. C. Evans Bryn Miskin; Mrs. T. P. John, and Mrs. Davies were hard at work, sup- ported by a bevy of willing workers— teachers, members of the Canteen Com- mittee, and other ladies. The cost of the Trealaw and Alaw food as. borne by Mr. Rhvs Williams, of MisMn Manor, who contributes t25 a week for the chil- dien. Mr. Wllliams, ever generous like his worthy father, is anxious that the children on his estate should not want. At Penygraig Infant School a grand Christmas treat was provided by Dr. and Mrs. Weichert, who entertained between 300 and 400 children to a Christmas dinner of the usual style, to which the children did appreciative justice. After dinner was over, the little ones gave 9 three cheers to the donors an response to the Rev. Mr. Jones, and then repaired to another room, marching in double file. Here was a gorgeous Christmas tree with over 400 gifts thereon. Each child was presented with a gift taken from the tree, and handed to the receiver by a real Father Christmas, with his red cloak, snowflakes, long beard, and the usual accessories to this popular make- up. Mr. Edwards (solicitor) played this role, and did it well. A large number of ladies and gentlemen, and Miss Harries (headmistress) and her staff assisted Mrs. Weichert in making this n red-letter day for the infants. As it was now four o'clock, it was impossible to visit other schools. Meeting Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Jones (headmaster) returning from Tony- pandy School, I learned that the Christ- mas dinner had been given at that school on the Saturday, when guts of poultry enabled them to provide a. special treat. At Dinas Mrs. Llewellyn, or Grovefield, superintended the arrangements, aided by Mrs. Saunders, and Mr. T. D. John and others. Dinners were provided at Penygraig Girls' School, Pontrhondda, Blaenclydach, Cwmclydach, Bodringallt, Gelli, and Pentre. Some 3,000 children participated of the Christmas cheer. The efficiency with which the arrangements have been carried out: the help of the Canteen Committee and of Councillors and their wives the beneficence of those in a position to give: the arduous work of those who have cooked the viands; the geneious relinquishing of their holi- days by the majority of teachers; and the readiness with which the little ones partook of the good things provided, all helped to make what would otherwise have been a sad holiday, a jolly, merry Christmas in spite of and in defiance of the gloomy conditions unavoidably per- taining at the homes.
I ) j Porth Harmonic Society.…
I j Porth Harmonic Society. I Magnificent Renderings of I If Messiah." Two fine performances of Handel's Messiah were given at Salem Chapel by the Porth Harmonic Society, under the conductorship of Mr. Rhyr, Evans, on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Both concerts were exceedingly well patronised, and the singing of the choir evoked the keenest enthusiasm. The majestic choruses, in which we are all familiar, were treated in a manner worthy of the occasion, and there was ample evidence that Mr. Evans' training had been an intelligent as well as a painstaking one. He had his reward, moreover, as it was generally admitted that the performances exceeded in quality anything approached in previous years. The artistes were Miss Alice Baxter, London (soprano); Miss Elsie Chambers, London (contralto); Mr. Gwilym Wigley, London (tenor); and Mr. Ben Evans, London (bass). Miss Baxter's singing quite captivated her Rhondda audience, and she greatly dis- tinguished herself in I know that my Redeemer liveth." Miss Chambers pos- sesses a voice of singular richness and charm, and she gave a highly-finished rendering of the parts allotted to her, particularly He was despise< Mr. Gwilym Wigley maintained his reputa- tion by artistic renderings of Comfort ye and Thou shalt break them." Mr. Ben Evans, a. Rhondda native, acquitted himself well. Mr. Arthur Angle's orches- tra and Prof. T. D. Edwards, A.R.C.M., at the organ, helped materially in making the concerts a pronounced success. The secretarial duties wer6 efficiently carried out by Councillor Wm. Evans and Mr. W. Owen Griffiths.
