BY A POWERFUL WRITER. THE JgROKEN JpETTSU, BY JOHN K. LEYS. Lovers of thrilling and sensational fiction will be delighted to learn that we have secured the right to publish an absorbing new work of singular interest from the pen of JOHN K. LEYS, Author of The Lindsays." U In the Toils,' "TheMyatery ot Lowdon Oastta," "Oo the Track of the Iron Horse," Guilty ot Not Guilty," A Bird of Prey," THE jgROKEN JpETTER possesses an unusual plot and an abundance of incident, and moreover, written in a tfryle to please the most fastidious reader. The author of our new story, Mr John E. Leys, is wet! known as a writer of skilfully con- structed stories. His works, whilst quite within the domain of probability, nevertheless derive muoh of their interest on account of the fertility of their author's imagination. Tbey are esentially stories of action, rapid in movement, and are written in a vigorous style. Mr Leys has few compeers in the art of con- structing a story so as to sustain and increase the intereit with each succeeding chapter. He lurea the reader on from scene to scene, and holds him spellbound to the end of the story. In a serial competition instituted by one of the great weeklies, Mr Leys obtained the first prize of sor bis sensational story In the Toite," THE JgROKEN JgtRTTER IS NOW APPKABINA IN THE CARTIFF rgllMBft ANn SOUTH ALES -^EEKLY JjpWS OUTLINE OF OPENING CHAPTERS. Dr. Stanford is summoned to attend a younpr Russian lady who seems to be dying ÚOJD All inexplicable cause. On examination be itwrMea that she musk have inhaled some poisonous gas from a scant-bottle placed by someone on the table. The doctor manifests an unusual interest in his patient. When he re-visits the girl he discovers the incriminating scent-bottle bas been removed by Madame Fabrini, who is ostensibly the housekeeper. On being closely questioned be reluctantly produoee a bottle^ which is recog- nised by Ursula Beritza, the patient, as the identical bottle. Dr. Stanford's suspicions at Madame Fabrini are temporarily allayed, but in leaving the bouse his eye is caught by a sparkle of glass in the gravel, which proves to be a fragment of a similar scent-bottle. The doctor returns, but finds that Madame Fabrini has disappeared be is informed that Ursula also has gonet. but is sceptical about the latter information, He casually sees her ab a window, whilst he is going through the gardens, and goes back, when she confides in him, inform- ing him of the plot to destroy her life. Her story is a sad and exciting one. The foregoing oonveya but a faint idea of the opening incidents of a very exciting serial. The story itself is largely concerned with the affaire of the Nihilist) Society, one of whose members is a traitor, and the evil genius of the story. He plots and counterplots, bis chief design being to obtain possession of the Beritza estates. To further his purpose nothing is too diabofoal for his scheming brain, He causes Ursula's brother to be arrested, thereby hastening her father's death, and matures plans by which he hopes to get rid of Ursula herself. Attempting far too muoh, he defeats his own ends. A strong love element runs through the story, which is ode of extraordinary power and sensation. MONK FOSTER. who has achieved great popularity as a writer of stories depicting the life of the tail- ing masses in large centres of industry aril commerce..«>■ Ói The Opening Chapters of this New StOiy Appeared in the CARDIFF TIMES AND SOUTHWALE8 WEEKLY NE -"I i Oil SATURDAY, SEPT. 26TH. To those who have read his previous works our author needs no introduction or praiq. His vivid pictures of industrial life live in the memory. For the benefit of those unac- quainted with The Queen of the Factory," Slaves of Fate," Children of Darkness," "Through Flood and Flame," or any other of the many successful stories from his facile pen, we give a few particulars of his career, THE MINE ]yjASTB-Rf JQAUGHTER OUTLINE OF THE STORY. The Mine Master's Daughter deals with the varying fortunes of Annie Lynn, tbe charming daughter of a miserly colliery pro- prietor. Father and daughter have widely different temperaments Abraham Lynn is avaricious, unfeeling, vindictive whilst his daughter is generous and sympathetic, and endears herself to all with whom she comes in contact. Across the paths of these two Irvea there comes John Ulvarston, clever and shrewd, but manly in character. He comes as the new manager for Abraham Lyna, and soon makes drastic changes in the conditions of labour. Ho deals firmly with the old man. pomting out to the latter the consequence* of his niggardly policy. The miser yields reluctantly and suspiciously to the irresistible arguments and infectious enthusiasm of his new manager, with the result that his mine develops into a very valuable property. Meanwhile Ulvarston is captivated by Annie Lynn, but honourably refrains from expressing his feelings to his divinity, who is engaged to the sou of a local banker named Cunningham. The bero plunges into work. hoping to find therein an anodyne for his disappointment, and succeeds in amassing for himself a considerable fortune from an old mine his employer has refused to work. Fortune's wheel turns slowly bat surely* and Abraham Lynn finds himself on the verge of bankruptcy. His daughter's ftaaœ, Cunningham, refuses- to help him, but the ÐQble instincts of Ulvarston prompt the latter to assist the old man in his distress. Gradually Annie Lynn learns the true character of Cunninghnm, and marries Ulvarston. There are exciting incidents in the coal mines, including the entombment of ccveral miners by a large fall. Ulvarston is over- powered by gas in a daring attempt at rescue, and is injured by a falling rock. The reader becomes interested in the hero and heroine from the first chapter, and follows them with increasing interest through all the vicissitudes whioh lead to their union.
