SOUTH WALES FINANCE jCardiff account days, October 15th and 29th). TUBSDAY, October 6th, 1896. The market has been very quiet to-day, irith a drooping tendency. No doubt the wretched weather we are experiencing just aow is mainly responsible for this altered condition of things. At the close of the day most of the heavy lines show fractional falls, but locals remain practically unaltered. There was one small transaction in Taff Ordinary at 84%, a price which shows a fall of ys on yesterday's business. Metropolitan Districts, after being dealt in at 33 and 35%, were turned over at the close of the day at 32%. There is very little business in coal shares just now in face of the depres- sion which reigns in the coal trade. D. Davis and Sons' Ordinary are marked down to 10%, to-day. If the high freight rates continue to rule for any length of time the outlook will become extremely serious for a large number of people engaged in the coal trade. Meantime shipowners are having a real good time in both outward and homeward rates. They claim that they deserve it after the long period of depression they have passed through. However that may be it is an undisputed fact that many steamers are now making profits varying from 30 per cent. to 40 per cent. on the voyage. One instance was brought to notice to-day wherein a steamer, which was named, usually earns 91,500 to £1,600 on a certain homeward voyage in freight, but on the voyage she is now making the value of the freight is over 23,000. That is an in- creased earning with a vengeance, and one calculated to revive the drooping spirits of steamship shareholders as much as it is likely to depress colliery shareholders. Spillers' and Bakers' Ordinary are lower to-day at 14%, and the Preference higher at 14%, No business is reported in the Mining Market. The following changes in value are noted in the official list of the Cardiff Stock Exchange:— Rise-Bristol Water Works (£20 paid) to 44% Spillers' and Bakers' 6 per Cent.
