MACHYNLLETH. THE WATER SUPPLY.—In consequence of the complaints regarding the water, the reservoir has been cleaner! out and provi-ion has bC"D made to prevent leaves, &c., eiit, ritig. Since this has been done the water is quite ch ar. There is now a good and wholesome supply of w ater. A TRIP To BORTH -Me Dd. Evans, solicitor, on Thursday, treated the aged inmates of the Work- house to a trip to Borth, where they were supplied with tea and other refreshments. The whole party was photographed and Mr Evans promised a copy to each inmate. A NIGGER TROUPE —A committee has been formed with the 1 bj-ct of forming a nigger troupe, to be made up of local ctlent. The intention is to hold entertainmfu 's, the proceeds of which would be given towards %ri it- g,ic)d causes in the town. A similar troupe a few y ar- ago did very well, being the means of handing "ver between JE60 and jE70 to the hospital and other funds. THE COUNTY SCHOOL.—The County School re- sumed work after th- urnm: r holidays on ruesday. Twenty-four new pupils have entered, bringing the total number up to,g.ii,y ag aith seventy last year. HARVEST FESTIVAL.—The annual Bangor Dio- cesan Conference opened at Machynlleth on Wed- nesday when the local ban est festival was cele- brated in the Parish Church. The sacred edifice had been beautifully decorated throughout with plants and flowers by Mr Gribble, gardener at the Plas. In the morning holy communion was cele- brated, the service beng fully choral. The cele- brant was the Rev Canon Trevor, rector, who was assisted by the Rev R. H Williams, Llanfaethliw, Rev Peter Jones, Llanddona, Rev James Wil- liams, Dolgelley, and the Rev D. T. Hughes, curate, the precentor for the day. At eleven a.m., the Church was crowded when the Lord Bishop of the Diocese preached. The anthem "The Lord is God" was sung by the choir, the solos being taken by Mr David Williams, Master Willie Williams, and Mr J, Evans and the double quartette was taken by Messrs W. Evans, J. Hamer, W. E. Evans, W. James, A. Lewis, W. Williams, J. Evans-, and Miss Agnes Jones. At noon the Marchioness (D.) of Londonderry entertained a large party at the Plas. The afternoon service was in Welsh, when the Rev Llewelyn Hughes of Portmadoc officiated and in the evening the Rev David Jones, B. A., Abererch, preached. The services were well attended throughout. REGISTRATION COURT.-On Wednesday morning Mr C. Elphinstone Lloyd, barrister at-law, held a registration court at the Town Hall, Machynlleth. Mr Shuker, Welshphol, assist d by Mr John Lewis, appeared in the Conservative interest, and Mr John Rowlands represented the Liberals. In the morning the county parishes were revised. There were f"w claims or objections. Among those objected to was Henry Thomas, schoolmaster, Penegoes. The Liberals were the objectors, alleging that his name was on the wrong list, being on the franchise list iostead of on Division 1. The objection was not sustained.—Mr Shuker objected to the claim of the Rev. W. S. Jones, stating that the property was the joint purchase of three, the father and two sons, and sub- mitted that not more than one was qualified in respect to the property. The Rev. W. S. Jones gave evidence stating that he was joint owner of the property, but Mr Shnker's objection was held to be good.- In the afternoon the town lists were revised. Mr J. Pugh, Newtown, represented the Conservatives and Mr Rowlands the Liberals. The Conservatives objected to John Pugh and John Pugh, jun., Maen- gwyn-street.—Mr Pugh stated that the father was down on the list as sole tenant and now both claimed votes as joint tenants.—It transpired that the rent was not enough to qualify two voters and both names were struck OU t. The Liberals claimed a lodger's vote on behalf of D. Lloyd Jones, N. and P. Bank.—Mr Jones gave evidence stating that he occupied a sitting-room and bedroom.—In reply to Mr Pugh, he said another man claimed a vote in respect of two rooms in the Bame house.—Mr Pugh submitted that as the rent was under f20 it would not admit of two lodger votes.—The Barrister observed that the other person mentioned did not appear to claim the vote and he did not kjow that I his name had not been wrongly put down. He therefore granted the claim.-Thcre were no other objections or claims of interest.

PENRHYNDEUDRAKTH. DEUDRAETH RURAL COUNCIL. The monthly meeting was held on Tuesday, Mr E. Bowen Jones ¡ presiding.—It was reported that the Lleyn and Eifionydd Building Society had undertaken to re- pair the hous-s complained of at Penrhyndeu- draeth.—Mr Casson, Portmadoc, wrote stating that he was willing to sell land at Harlech for the purposes of a drainage scheme. He wished to know what the Council were prepared to ofF r. The Council appointed a comfnitte" consisting of Messrs R. Richards, John Lloyd, Richard Davies, A. Griffith, and the Surveyor to visit the site with a view of fixing upon a sum to be offered Mr C tsson. -Tr,e Local Government Board wrote recommending the Council to authorise the Sur- veyor to keep the order book at the Clerk's office and not at his own "ffiee and the recommendation was adopted. -Mr M. E. M rris, Harlech, wrote stating that he ha i purchased land for building purposes at Minff-irdd, but that he was unable to proceed owing to hick of a drainage system.—It was agreed to ask Mr Morris to lay the master h fore the Parish Council. Rowlands pre- sented the report of the Attendance Committee, and it was resolved to take proceedings against defaulting parents unless the attendance of the children at school improves to the satisfaction of the officer.-The Attendance Committee recom- m"nded that representation be made to the Towyn Urban District Council to do all in their "power to get the sanitary condition of Pennal village im- proved.—It was resolved that the recommendation be acted upon and that attention be called to the fac- that much illuess of a serious nature prevails in the village, which acts detrimentally upon the school. Finance Committee.—Mr H Evans was elected to fill the vacancy on the Committee cius-d by the resignation of the Rev J. O. Thomas. Deputatioli.-A deputation consisting of Mr ADwvl, Dr Kershaw, Mr Filgate, Captain Bill, R- v W. M. Roberts, Captain E. Lewis, and Capt. Ed w ardsatt-n ied the meeting anrl protested against the proposed enlargement of the Aberdovey School and the erection of a school at Pantperthig. Mr Filgate, Dr Kernlnw, Mr Anwyl. Rev W. M. Rob rts and Captain E. Lewii spoke. Precepts to Rating Authorities. —An est'mat-e of the liabilities rif the Board for the half year, ending 25th March, 1900. was read and it was resolved that prpcepts be is°ued for an amount equal to 6d in the pound to the Towyn parish overseers for L385 5s and to the Pennal overseers for £ 57 5s 6d. The same was ordered to be paid to the Treasurer on or before 1st January, 1900. Additional School Accommodation at Alerdove. —The Rev J. Rowlands proposed and the Rev R. Davies seconded that the resolution of the Board in regard to the need of enlargement of the Aberdovey Board School b- rescinded.—Mr E. Rowland moved and Mr E. L. Ro vlands seconded that the Board proceed with the consideration of the plans for en- larging the school. There voted for this motion the proposer, seconder, Rev R. Jones, and Mr Wm. Jones, which was therefore carried. The plans were referred to the managers to report upon at the next meeting, M'.seellane-o-ti.,z. -The resignation of Mr William Roberts, asistant teacher, Bryncrug School, was accepted and the Clerk was directed to advertise for a successor in the Cambrian News and other papers.—The Master of Bryncrug School was given leave to close the school on the 9:h and 10th Oct., as suggested in his let-,er.-It was decided to ex- tend the apprenticeship of Miss Mary Davies, pupil teaher, Pennal, for a year.—The Medal Committee were authorised to order the medals submitted and ts have the suggested inscription engraved thereon. Evening Schools.—It was decided that the Managers of all the schools be requested to open evering schoo's, it considered desirable, upon the same terms a" in previous years and that they be asked to take every means in their power to ensure the success of the evening schools. Contract at Pennal School.-— It was resolved to call the attention "f Mr Richard P. Morgan to the necessity of completing his contract. Books for PtlJ11f Teacher,,?. -The headmasters were directed to submit a list of books required for pupil teachers previous to their being ordered. Examination of Pennal Pupil Teachers.-The re- port of the exsnvnation was read and it was re. solved in conseqo nee of the Master's remarks to impress upon the pupil teachers the importance of attending reaularlv and systematically to their home lessons during the winter.

At Clerkenwe'l, on Saturday, Charles Giles and Charles Att-weil, were each fined £100 and costs fnr keeping a common betting house in Murray- street, eirnd, D T.:wn. Ten thousand betting telegrams wre found on the premises, and Giles's commission betting for the twelve months showed a profit of 912,000 on a turnover of £ 55,000.
