GROUSE PROSPECTS IN NORTH WALES* From North Wales I have (says a "Daily Telegraph" correspondent) reliable information derived from pointer and setter work. The Ruabon Hills, that so long have held the re- cord, are well stocked, in spite of all forecasts to the contrary. These hills are low, they lie not far from the mouth of the Dee, and do not rise very high above the level of the river there. Consequently these may be treated as the low- est grouse moors in Wales, or nearly so. Evi- dently a good many birds must have been sit- ting at the time the snow enshrouded these hills, and the unwelcome influence did not last as lon<n nor could it have been accompanied by such severe frost, as 1000 feet higher up, at the head- waters of the Dee, where all the grouse ground is high. Sir Watkin Wynn has been out with his pointers there, and has very kindly given me results of work done. He found a very bad and gloomy state of things. Amongst them many barren birds, only a few well-grown young ones in the most sheltered oorners, some broods only three-parts grown, and other lots of oheepors only just able to fly. My view of these bad tid- ings is that on the great Highlands of Mid- Wales the grouse had begun to lay, but not to incubate, when the snow came, that some of them lost by frost most of their eggs, and most of them lost a large proportion. Those which lost all account for barren birds, and some that laid again for the cheeper broods.

WELSH REGATTA SEASON, EXCITING RACES ALONG THE MENAI STRAITS. INTERESTED SPECTATORS. The Welsh regatta season opened under most auspicious circumstances at Penmaenmawr, on Friday. On the following day the Llandudno regatta was held, and on Bank Holiday, Beau- maris was the rendezvous of all local yachtsmen, who, on Wednesday, were attracted to Carnarvon by the annual Sailing Club regatta and by the annual regatta of the Royal Welsh Yacht Club on the succeeding day. The entries were nume- rous at all the different places, and the commit- tees can congratulate themselves upon having provided capital regattas.

PENMAENMAWR REGATTA. This popular annual event should have taken place a fortnight ago, but the date was changed in consequence of the unfavourable conditions "then prevailing. On Friday the weather was delightful, and the regatta proved an unqualified success, this being due in a large measure to the zealous manner in, which the hon. secretary (Mr R. John Hughes) and the committee carried out their duties. The promenade had been very effectively deco- rated, and the scene along the foreshore was quite picturesque. It was deeply regretted that owing to the re- cent death of Mrs Kneeshaw, Mr Kneeahaw and Mr Wilfred Kneeshaw, who in the past spared neither time nor expense to promote the suc- cess of the regatta, were unable to take part. In Mr Kneeshaw's absence, Dr. J. R. Williams, J.P., R.W.Y.C., the vioe-commodore, acted as commodore, and placed at the committee's dis- posal his motor launch, the "Ardrfe." The s.s. "Trevor" waa the flagship. It was almost half-an-hour after the advertised time that the yachts taking part in the first event were started in favourable wind. This was the principal event of the day, being a handicap race for yachts belonging to any recognised yacht club. There were six entries, all well-known in the yachting world, and the result was a most interesting race. The course was one of about fourteen miles. The handicaps were ^"Armis- tice" (Mr P. Marsh), 7 minutes; "Cigfran" (Mr W. S. Kneeshaw), lOg minutes; "Irene II" (Mr Buckley Holmes), 10 minutes; "Eurynome" (Mr D. de Larrinaga), 14 minutes; "Myrtle" (Mr A. R, Ellison), 21 minutes; and "Wallaroo" (Mr W. J. Spurr), scratch. The "Wallaroo" led through- out, and crossed the winning post some minutes ahead of her opponents. The others followed in the following order:—2nd, "Irene II;" 3rd, "Cig- fran;" 4th, "Eurynome;" 5th, "Armistice;" and 6th, "Myrtle." When the handicap was worked out, the "Eurynome" was returned as winner in 1 hour 40 minutes 30 seconds; "Irene II. 2nd, in 1 hour 42 minutes 33 seconds; and the "Wal- laroo," 3rd, in 1 hour 45 minutes 30 seconds. In the race for yachts of the "Sea Bird Class," there were eight entries, and Mr W. D. Cod- dington's "Sea Snipe" was first, Mr J. C. H. Sandbach's "Skua" second, and Mr M. E. Nee's "Modryb" third. Mr Shem Jones, Conway, for the seoond year in succession, won the race for open sailing boats with "Eric," "Hope" (Mr W. R. Roberts) being second, and "Sally" (Mr W. Roberts) third. The in-shore events were all of muoh interest, and in several cases close finishes were witnessed. One competition, of which special mention should be made, was the 100 yards open swimming race. The gun had gone, and the competitors were all between thirty and forty yards ahead when A. Russell entered the water. Swimming at a. tre- mendous rate, using a powerful trudge stroke, he overhauled his men easily with the exception of Robert W. Williams, of Rhyl, who managed to get home a couple of yards to the good. Rus- sell s effort was most loudly and deservedly cheered. to get home a couple of yards to the good. LLANDUDNO REGATTA. The oonditions which prevailed at Liandudno on Saturday would have gladdened the heart of even the most capricious yaohtsman. There was a fine sailing breeze, perhaps not as strong1 as some of the larger craft would have liked, but enough to satisfy all concerned in the races, and the entries were good. Llandudno, always prettv. looked orettier than, ever on Saturday, and the town wore quite a festive appearanco, the public and private decorations on the pier and promenade being very tasty. Owing to the untiring efforia of Mr W. D. Longshaw, the en- tries this year were far in excess of previous occasions, a.nd greater public interest centred in the event. Lord Mostyn was the commodore, with Mr R. S. Chamberlain as vice-commodore. The officers of the dav included Messrs John Roberts, R. T. Owen, Frank Edge, and Eliap Jones, whilst Messrs W. S. Jones, R.W.Y.C., and C. Wvnne-Griffitih, R.W.Y.C., acted as time- keepers. Mr J. F. Jellioo was the hand'oappor, and Councillor Hugih Edwards the starter. Mr W. H. Jones war, the ohairinan and treasur- er. and Mr W D. Longshaw the painstaking secretary The racing was witnessed from the pier by large crowds, who, if they understood not the technicalities of yaohting, were yet able to ap- preciate the charming marine picture which was brought to their vision as the yachta, with every stitch of canvas unfurled sped graoefully through the water in friendly rivalry. The principal event was the handicap for cruisers, and it was somewhat of a surprise to see the small "restricted" Ikinoo taking her place amongst the competitors, and a greater surprise still whan she was declared winner on her time allowanoe. She finished with her pro- test flag flying, and Wallaroo had hooted a similar emblem of complaint. Each claimed a foul against the other, but, it is understood, obiections wore not proceeded with. It was a great race throughout, and the result was a tri- bute to Mr J. F. Jellico's handicapping., which was as follows:—Almida scratch, Wallaroo (sailed by Mr A. E. Sannie) 7 mins.. Irene 15 mins.. Armii-tioe 17 mins., Eurynome 20 mins., Sthoreen 25 mins.. and Ddrroo 35 mins. The results were as follow:—. THE CHIEF EVENT. ROYAL ANGLESEY YACHT CLUB. In almost perfect weather the annual re- gatta of the Royal Anglesey Yacht Club took place at Beaumaris on Bank Holiday. The entries were more numerous than usual, and some capital racing was witnessed. There was a nioe breeze from the westward, which favour- ed the smaller rather than the larger boats, the latter being divided into two classes, the one under and the other over fifteen tons. There were several new comers, including the "Bene- mona," which was built by Messrs Rowlands, of Garth, Bangor, for Mr Turner, of Belmont, Bangor, and the "Mermaid," which is owned by Mr Dean, of Blackburn. (The oommodoro was Sir R. H. Williams- Bulkelev, Bart., and in his absence the rear- commodore of the club, Mr J. H. Burton, acted as officer of the day, and his ..no auxiliary schooner "Dwynwen" served as flagship. Mr Barton was assisted in the starting and tim- ing arrangements by Captain F. S. Langdon, the honorary secretary of the club, Mr W. Thornton Jones, and ftr William Griffith, the assistant-secretary. In the chief raoe the winning flag went to the Manchester boat "Wallaroo" which had an allowance of seven minutes. Here it might be interesting to state that "Wallaroo" has this year taken part in 14 races, bemg first on five occasions, second on six. and third on one. "Almida" same second, ^'Mayflo ^r," who did not put in an appearance last year, was third, with the new "Benemora" last. In the next division "Irene, scratch, was first, with "Eurynome," allowed five minutes, second. Then followed "Punctilio," "Mer- maid," and "Roulette." Although not in the same raco "Mermaid" protested a ainst "Wal- laroo," and late in the evening the Committee decided to refer the matter to the Royal Yacht Association so that a definite ruling can be had on a point which really ought to be settled. In the Royal Mersey Class "Myfanwy" was first, and "Ilcinoo" second, while Cyane'' took.! the Royal Anglesey one-rater prize. TUSSLE FOR THE HALF-RATER TROPHY Finally there came the usual tremendous tus- sle for the little half-rater trophy, and once in a way Mr Coddington was beaten. "Menna," sailed by tho adroit Messrs Newton, of Car- narvon, was seoond, "Dulys" third, "Seasnipe" fo-jrth, and "Mair," whom little Miss Hall sailed, fifth. Mr Hall had his fine yacht "Capri" anchored off the pier, and the whole front was gaily decorabed, and never before had so many: spectators witnessed a Royal Anglesey regatta. DETAILS. Handicap Matoh, yaohts exceeding fifteen tons.—1st £ 10, 2nd £ 5. All carried spinnakers to port as far as the Sound, then had a reach to the ten-feet bank buoy and back. The "Al- mida" was just leading through the Sound. Turning to windward she was leaving tho "Wal- laroo," but the latter was always within her time.
