LOCAL FINANCE. [BY OUR FINANCIAL EDITOR.] CARDIFF, FRIDAY. Contrary to expectation, markets have heJn fairly active to-day, and prices ob- tained have been, in some cases, fractionally better. Rails are dull, but Coal shares keep firm, and London and Provincial Banks are b better than previous transactions. The changes which have been made in the list of quotations are as follow :—.Rise Midland Three per Cent. Debentures 1 to 104-106, London and Provincial Banks J to 19À-, Powell DufVryn Debentures 1 to 57-8 for £50 paid, and Bute Dry Docks J to 54—6. Vail: Brecon and Merthyr B Debentures J to 89-90, Inquiries have been made to-day for Pen. rikyber Colliery Shares, London and Provin- cial Banks, Cardiff Ice" B Shares at 8, Penrikyber Ordinary at 5, Barry Ordinary tock, Severn and Wye Ordinary, Bristol and South Wales Wagons, and Cardiff Gas I "D" Stock. New sellers offer North's Colliery Ordinary, Hancock's Preference, International Coals at 4ft, Alexandra" A" Preference, National Bank of Wales at ljj, Powell Duffryn De- bentures at 8 premium, Barry Ordinary at 206, Barry Three-and-a-Half Debenture Stock at 112J, Vaughan Steam Dyeing Shares, Great Western Colliery B Shares, Glamorgan Billposting (£2 10s. paid) Shares at XS 10s., and Albion Colliery Shares. The business done on the Stock Exchange is as follows Severn and Wye Ordinary, 10. Ta! Vale Ordinary, 76. Aibion Steam Coal, llj, J. W. Hancock Ordinary, 14,14, 14 1-16. The non-members of the Stock Exchauge report:— Brecon and Morthyr B Debentures, 90, 90. Penrikyhcr Ordinary, 5. Rhjmnoy Now. 13., 9d. Rhymney Old, 30.. South Wales Colliery A," 84, London Provincial Banks, 191,191A National Bank of Wales, 1. Penrikyber, 5. Albion Colliery Shares, 11J. Hancock Ordinary, 14 1-16, 14. Hancock Preference, £ 11 13s. 9d. Powell Duffryn Six per Cent, Debenture, 8 premium. In reference to the International Coal Company, we hear that tho" consultative 1. committee have met the board, and we have no doubt their report will be very gratifying to the shareholders. None of the charges made appaar to have much in them. The altered state of the trade has put the directors in a position to consider the payment of a dividend on the ordinary shares at no very distant date. The present good prices will unquestionably be the means of taking the shares back to their old figure. The Seven- and-a-Half per Cent. Debentures, of which there are only about R12,000 issued, are surely a cheap purchase at par. The statement of accounts of the steam- ship Deerhound, covering the period from June 24 to December 12, 1893, have been issued. According to the report, threight market is still unsatisfactory, but a dividend of 12s. 6d, per share has been declared. Messrs. Chitliam and Henry are the mana- ging directors. As a few people in Cardiff still hold Mysore Harnhalli Shares, the following ex- tract from the Financial News may be inte- resting:—The liquidator of the Mysore Harnhalli Gold Mining Company (Limited), in liquidation, referring to the re-construction scheme, states that the Bharcs in the now company will be iBsned with 17s. credited as paid-up thereon, instead of 15s., as authorised by the special resolu- tion, which variation the shareholders will be asked to approve, The Mysore Govern- ment has agreed to accept 7,000 fully-paid shares in exchange for the 7,000 shares in the transfer 1 old company, and in satisfaction of the

CARDIFF WAIFS IN A RAIL-I…
CARDIFF WAIFS IN A RAIL-I WAY CARRIAGE. CARRIED AWAY TO NEWNHAM I WHILST ASLEEP. An unusual incident was brought to light on Wednesday at Newnham Great Western Rail. way on the arrival of the 6.45 a.m. passenger train ex. Cardiff. It appears tbat a th d eHu;:rd;ggSt g:fP%S tea\birl.cl:: compartment of the train at Awre, -d on his way felt considerable alarm, as he imagined there fe?lats something alive under his seat. Apparently he was alone, and saw no reason to suppose he had company. Arriving at Newn. ham, Mr. Harding, stationmaster, was con- sulted, and the search-light from the station- master's lamp discovered three boys under the seat. They were between twelve and thirteen years of age, and gave the names of Edward Smith, 73, Carlisle-street, John Germain, 22, Habershon-street, and John Hobbs, 7, Ponty- pridd-street, East Moors, Cardiff. They were very mggiod, and belonged evidently to the parrow fraternity, The lad. .fF.IrIt?i rthe l explanation that they got into the ?.rri.g. at the East Moors to sleep the night, and hd not finished their nap when the train started. They were very glad to start back home without any.furtber unpleasant experience than a severe fright, and a no less severe reprimanding.
A WEDDING GIFT.
A WEDDING GIFT. HUSBAND AND WIFE QUARREL ABOUT IT AND GO TO LAW. At Crewe on Wednesday his honour Judge Hughes had before him a claim by Thomas Margiiwon for the recovery of a silver biscuit barrel from his wife, Ellen Marginson. The plaintiff said he married the defendant three- and-a-half years ago, and two daya after the marriage some of his fellcw-workinen from Urewe Railway Works waited upon him amI, presented him with a silver biscuit barrel as a wedding prudent. It was not presented to his wif", The defence waa that the barrel was presented to botb.-Ilis honour nailed for 'he article, and found on the lid an iiigeri?tion, !P:i:1 arod Mr. and Mrs. Majginson," &<? —The plaintiff's solicitor said that Mrs. Mar. tinson's name was put on about six weeks afterwards, and that it was done" out of cour- tesy." There was no name on at the time it was presented. The parties had had a quarrel and were now separated. The wife refused to give up the biscuit barrel on the ground that it waa as much her's as her hus- band's.—The Secretary of the Presentation Com- mittee said tha.t the biscuit barrel was presented to the plaintiff. lIe did not know anything about the inscription, which was put on after- wards.—The Judge said the inscription was evidence that it belonged to husband and wife jointly. He oould impound it until they came to an agreement, w one died and the other claimed it. But it was a useful present, and ho was unwilling to do that. As the wife had it and there was evidence that it belonged partly to her he gave a verdict in favour of her retaining it.

TRADE REPORTS.j
TRADE REPORTS. GLASGOW, Friday.— xhere has been a fair business this week in the Scotch iron trade. Some excitemont occurred in tho warrant market owing to extensive and influential selling of Scotch iron, which sent back prices 6d per ton. It was feared that the market was abont to collapse, more especially as prices are known to have been supported by operations of the bulls rather than by any additional demand on the part of consumers. For the present, how- ever, a o rtl* aI recovery has taken place in fCrB,a Tti?."gh co; deal t}e:ni; prevails to the immediate coursc of the market. Special brands of makers' iron are firm bccause of their scarcity, and on account of the approaching holi- day. the ironmasters are not pressing forward the lighting of the blast furnaces with such vigour as might otherwise be done. The demand for pig iron i8 quiet, both for home consumption and shipment. There are fair inquiries for steel, but the capacity of the works is so great that the orders are quickly absorbed, and prices are not more than maintained. The makers of malleable iron are in some -?. very b..y, much 1* that they will tp only ??ry h-t tihf: ta:dylpri rt6ih:nro: unchanged. Coal is becoming ,o. plentiful, but prices are firm.
