I mere !? a tendency on the part of eomo people ? o look upon Aberavon as a. second- rate side, flow auch an impression existti is ii-it easily undex-stood in the light of recent results. Abe-avon have drawn with Neath, and have run Cardiif to a trv on their own ground; in addition to which they have beaten Leicester pretty badly. Without the shadow of a doubt they are the nicst im- proved te,-tm in Wales, judged on the basis of their play during the last two or three months. To-morrow they will have a supreme teat, for Swanoea will be fighting for invincibility. That it is gding to be a very na.rd game I am convinced. Some of ui expect to see the All Whites get one of their nardcet tests of the season, but I fail to see how Aberavon can beat the team who gave the Springboks their quietus. If the record goes it will surprise all of us. j 7h ale:'tr}%¿i'J1f\8et{)aVS f hard forward struggle, with Swansea winning by a small margin by virtue of their greater I cleverness. I ABERAVON POINT OF VIEW. I there a solid feeling in Abei-avon ana j in Mid-Glamorg&n and eastern football ) circles generally, that on Saturday next the aU-cuiujufenng All Whites will experi- ence their most severe trial of the season U) rataiii their unbi"oken record, when they meet Aberavon on the Port Talbot Athletic Ground for the. first time this season (writes Lucifor.") People may be oceptieal of the remotest chance of such a possibility a8 a defeat of Swansea, after the run of great victories they have achieved against the finest fcotbail talent cf the world, but those sceptics are among those who kave not Geen Aberavon perform this year nt their beet. Oue thing i6 certain—ihat Swansea will have to eKt-and themselves to the ut- l1208t to maintain their predominance. I Whenever a meeting tekes place between 1 tiez,) old rivals and firm foot ball friends, •xtendiug over a. period of half a century, one realises that in thi", long period of conflict Aberavon have on several occasions experienced hard lines in not winning by running Swansea to a liarit draw, as they did last season at Aberavon, and only lost on St. Helen's last season by 5 points to 6; that it is only on 1.111:5 occasion that Aber- avon has succeeded in registering a defeat I against Swansea. That occasion is worthy of especial notice. \G -9 ACKWA IRD. I I It was oil March lot b, 1897—that day still i green in the memory ol Aberavon football-- when they made the All Whites bite the. dust on the old Aberavon Football Ground hy a dropped p<val to nil. The player who dropped the goal was Will R, The team hicti achieved this was a magnificent one, and probably contained the finest paut ) which ha* ever played for a club team in Walas. Thi* was the teamBack, Rees TiOwia; three-quarters, Charlie Cookings. Evan Jones, D. H. James and Will Rees; half-baeki;, Danny Jenea and fiellaway; for- wards, Jvor Griffiths, Charlie Banaey, Tim iladden, Jack Jones, Dai Rowlands, W. iiva.rio, W, Kenefick, and Bill Jonu, i SATURDAY'S TEAM. For Saturday s game the Aberavon Com- mittee hRV made an important change in the composition of the hacks, Guthrie Mor- gan going from centre to outside-half in place of Fred Potter. Thw should be a strengthening factor, u Morgan i61 an ex- tremely dangerous stand-off half, as Neath last season learnt to their sorrow and de- feat. The thrc<Ktuarter position will be filled by that brilliant, youngster of the Willie Davi&s school—W. J1, Ualliver. 'The team will therefore be able to held ito strongest possible side, ever; player being detormine-d to make a bold bid for victory. Aberavon.-Baek, Johnny Davies; three Quav&ara, Jimmy Donovan (capt.), E. B. Rae.>, G. H. (ialliver and Ivor Hopkins; half-backs, Willie Jones and Guthrie Mor gan forwards (from). ltaes Richards, Willie iiopkiii*. Torn iJonsford, Charlie Jones, B. Gould, Boh Randall, Dai Randall, M. Rawiings and Ralph Williams. I SCARLETS' BIG TEST. Stimulated by the victories they achieved in their Christmas holiday matches, and by 1lie fact that they gave Cardiff a most anxious time of it rceeutly at Cardiff. Llan- eUy (writes "WaAl"y") aro awaiting tho return match at Stradey wiin feverish excitement. They mean business, aad if Cardili want to escape defeat they shouiu beware! Lianeily, when in the humour at any rate, can play football. Those who are inclined to doubt this can consult the Springboks, or better still, let them turn up at Stradey to-morrow, and unless I am grievously mistaken, they will find Cardiff. if not a beaten team, having a warm time of it. The Scarlets, unless anything uti- toward happens, are almost certain to make a bold bd for victory, and they ha?e a quiet oon&dcnce that they will d.,v ) the trick on this occasion. If Lianeily bring about that which they are aiming for, then tjieir match with Swansea at St. Helen's on tJ¡j3 following Saturday will be invested with additional interest. In any case, the match with Cardiff to-morrow ought to be well worth seeing, provided, of course, that the game is not spoilt by rain; and inasmuch as the Lianeily Soccer tm will be at Luton, there ought to be a huge crowd at Stradey NEATH GOING TO PENARTH. The visit of Neath to Penarth to-morrow recalls memories of last year's visit. Evet the rain wo have experienced over the holi- days just passed was nothing to the deluge that swept the Penarth field upon that oc- casion. The All Blacks" were rather weakly represented, and with the deluge of rain falling there were fervent hopes ex- pressed that. the matoli would be cancelled. Alas, no! We had to stick it. The field was in an unspeakable condition, and the huge crowd of spectators, five men and three boys, were in a miserable condition. Neath won that game, but the Penarth forwards gave an unexpectedly good display. Neath should be strongly represented to-morrow, and should win with comparative ease; in fact, if tihe backs play as they did in the second half of last Saturday's game against Swansea, they should win by a respectable score. But 'start in earnest at once" should be the motto, not wait for half time before getting to full swing CHOSEN OF DANYGRAIG. Ammanford will be the visitors to-morrow at Danygraig, and a good game will be seen. Ammanford have been doing well, and earlier in the season beat Danygraig, j and thus are bringing their strongest team down. Danygraig have selected a strong fifteen, and as both Swansea, first teams of 1 both codes are away, Danygraig should re- ccive a good "gate," as ihey badly need financial help. Back, J. Ward; three-Quar- ters, W. Morris, P. Shefford, W. Leopold, and A. N. Other half-backs, Johnny Grif-! 6ths and Ray SheSord; forwards (fromj. J. Davies, G. Moi?an, S. Davies, J. Hanson, F. Amos, J. Beard, 1. Erazell, i-t,dcliffe, Myers, and B. Jones. THE JOHN DAVIES CUP. Bay cliff e and Mansel will meet again to- morrow in the first round for the John Davie? Challcnga Cup. Thi? match, which i aIousing great interest in Rugby league circle* will be played at the Manselton > Racecourse, Bot teams have excellent records, and as Swansea are playing away there should be a good attendance. The usual battle royal between the half-backs will not be ea keen, as both" Dodger" Owen and Johnny (jrihiths, these old rivals, are playing for Swansea 1L and Danygraig respectively, this season. Baycliffe, who are considered the smartest junior oombinar tion in Wales, will be represented by:- Ba-ek, Budge; threequarters, Ashford (cap- tain). (Jroker, Kneath, Morris and Richards; half-backs. Mason and A. N. Other: for- warcte (from) Parker. Chielet, Bone, Evans, Condrey, Smith, Williams, lIuut, Kneatvj and kidd. OFF TO WREXHAM. j i Swansea Town left to-day for vv rexham, where they will meet the local team to-mor- row in a WeWi Cup round. The Swans' team will, with the exception that Fisher takes die place of Whittaker in goal, and Pamilton that of Jepp at centre-half, be the same as played such a magnificent game against AOerdare last Saturday. Wrexham is the home of Association football in Wales, and the Wrexha.m team is, perhaps, the best in the Principality, and, as usual, is this season playing well. The team stands high in the Birmingham League table. I Wrexham are old cup-tie fighters, and have frequently won the trophy. Consequently, the Swans may expect a stiff fight on Satur- day, but if they play as well as they did against Aberdare they bhould do tho trick. MEMENTOES FOR SWANSEA PLATERS. Shepherd (Mountain Ash). I MR. BAXTER'S TRIBUTE. The incidents which occurred at the Pare des Princes did not detract in any way from the frank cordiality of the hanquet over which Sena, tor Raymond presided in the evening, and which was attended by the players and officials of both sides. After the secretary of the Rugby Union and the capt^iu of the French team had spoken, All- Baxter, the referee, said that lie should forget the unfortunate incident, and only recall the warm welcome which he received from the French officials. He especially thanked the noted French players. Faillioa and Monniot, who protected him from the crowd. The receipts from the match amounted to 41.000 francs, and constitute a rccord in France. HOCKEY. Briton ferry v. Ivy (Swansea,).—Played at Rritonf^rry on Thursday afternoon— FinaJ ocore: hy (Swansea). 5 goals; Britonl'erry, 2 goals.
