From the Editor's Chair.
From the Editor's Chair. These are stirring days! 'Mid turmoil and stress we are living, and an optimis- tic disposition is the best of armour. Strange and wondrous things are da.lJ" happening and to the student of history, particularly political history, it is 3: reason of high good t.me. We have just gone through the hottest of fires in that of the war. We won that, and won it tri- umphantly, but winning of the peace is st.11 in the melting pot. Though victors, we have a big account to settle before we can declare iurselves solvnb and respect- able. Our brains are worked over much with the imag, inat.on of reconstruction. Short cuts and long circuits to th^desired state are crowding upon us in competitive order. In the past week's events things not- able as marking periods have come about. The first woman M.P. has arrived and has arrived in style, triumphant and vic- torious. Even Labour has had to bow to the glamour in the train of the woman's march to the "Mother of Parliaments"— the Br ti;-h House of Commons. L berals and Unionists outside the Coalition are no more of much count-" their number is up." A plague on political parties who tail to realise that patriotism is moie. than partizanship and must remain until the wheels of the nation's chnriot is once again travelling with the more surety of safe journeys. Astor has gone to the House of Commons as a Coal.tionist, and it is the tangible evidence that the women of the country are going to be patriots before partizans and that whatever the Wee Frees" and the rest of the bread and. cheese" politicians may dream, they must. .not forget the women are going to upset lie fond calculations of some of them. There is no doubt that the country is sound on one point-and, will not budge, therefore that Mr Lloyd George—the man who had done the most to shatter Kaiser- ism, to save democracy, to win victory beyond dreaming, and to raise Brita.n to the greatest height on which she ever stood, must be entrusted with the man-, date to wind up the war, to establish, peace in concert with the Allies, and to undertake domestic reconstruction. The victory gained by the first woman M.P. is another proof that the mandate g'ven to the Prime Minister is jiot yet, withdrawn and for the while, the country is plainly determined to trust him to do it. He must go on, and should be nllowed to go on without this interminable cavill- ing of smaller men. We are glad to find, that the "Premium Bonds" suggestion to pay our debts has had its knock-out, and the "Income Tax" ballot has been so un- decisive as to result in shelving. We must pay our way and the folks who have the mortey should stump up and not fuss about it in the obviously selfish way ':1 wlr'ch young bachelors have done in this last ballot. There is no "playing the gnme" spirit in such doings. The extrem- ist are waning, and sound, steady pro-i gresnver are winning.
IHERE AND THERE.I
I HERE AND THERE. I Mr C. H. Collett, 189 East rd., Tylors-. town, late of the Welsh Regiment, has written a "Hymn to the Fallen," to the tune of "Aurelia" (Church Hymnal), a copy of which he sent to the King. In reply Mr Collett has received a warm note of acknowledgment from his Majesty's pri- •vate secretary. Mr David Richards, F.A.I., of Pentre. has been secretary of the Rhondda Grocers' Association since it was formed 22 years ago. He has now been appointed to that position for the ensuing year. A considerable portion of Rhondda tele- graph and telephone wires have now been 1a;d underground. While the authorities are on this work they could with advan- tage add a few extra telephone lines to the existing supply and thus a lleviate the I exasperation suffered by through inordinate delay in securing con- nection. THE ART OF CAMOUFLAGE.
THE ART OF CAMOUFLAGE. Much of our success during the recent war was due to the effective use of camouflage- both on land and sea. It appears that the Viithors of the idea were Mr. Abbott H. fhayer, an artist, and Captain Wilkinson, d the Navy, and the plan was based cargely on Mr. Thayer's researches on the subject of concealing colouration in the ani- mal kingdom. The camouflaging scheme was a huge success up to a certain period. when some shrewd Germans made discoveriea which led to a general disbelief in all the eyes, or the eyes plus instrumental aids, saw at sea. MT. Thayer has pursued his studies eince the armistice, and accomplished striking things; in fact, he has developed quite a new art which bears promise of great pos- sibilities. Mr. Thayer has produced a replica of a Himalayan landscape done in the feathers of the Monal pheasant alone. The finished picture is a convincing bit of artis- try, depicting foliage, snow-clad mountains, dark thickets, and sunlight. Then, to sliow how the colour scheme of the surroundings actually conceals the bird, Mr. Thayer painted a pheasant in a similar landscape so artfully that a copper stencil, outlined to fit the bird, was neccssary before the ob- server could distinguish the pheasant!
