The Annual Meeting of the C.M. Sunday Schools of North Cardiganshire. The annual meeting of the Sunday School was held this year at Libanus Chapel, Borth, on Wednesday May 23rd. The Chairman was the Rev. W. Morgan, Fwllglas, Penygarn, the treasurer, Mr Daniel Thomas, Draper, Aberystwyth, and the secretaries, Messrs Thos. Owens, County School, Aberystwyth, and J. Barclay Jenkins. Great Darkgate-street. The morning meeting at 10. a.m. was opened with prayer by the Rev. D. R. Williams, Salem, Aberystwyth, and a large number of representatives were present from the various schools in the district. Messrs A. T. Joseph, Cwmystwyth, and J. Morris, Penllwyn were appointed auditors for the ensuing year. and contributions towards the expenses of the meeting were received by the treasurer from various districts. The following scheme of examination for the next year was then discussed and approved of. The annual written examination is to be held on Wednesday April 3rd, 1901. The first eight chapters of John's Gospel were chosen as the portion of Scripture to be studied by the senior classes during the current year. Senior division for those over 21 years of age. John I-VIII generally, and a silver medal to be awarded to the first, and prizes in books of 10s., 4s., and 2s. 6d., for those coming next on the list. Second division, those between 16 and 21 years of age John I-VIII, historically, with questions on geography and the meaning of words occurring in the history, a silver medal for the first, here also, and prizes in books to the value of 10s., 8s., 6s., 4s. and 2s. for the next in order on the list. Third section, those between 13 and 16 years of age, John I-VI, treated historically, with questions on geography, and the meaning of words occurring in the history, and a silver medal to be awarded to the first in this division also, and prizes in books to the value of 7s., 6s., 5s., 4s., 3s. and 2s for those coming next in order on the list. Fourth Division, for those between 10 and 13 years of age. the History of Jesus Christ, lessons 41-50 (both inclusive), in the '4th standard syllabus published by the S.S. Union, and prepared by the Rev. T. Levi, and a bronze medal to be awarded to the first and prizes in books to the value of 6s., 5s., 4s., 3s., 2s. and Is., to the next in order on the list. Fifth division, for those under 10 years of age, easy question on the same lessons as the fourth division, with a bronze medal to the first, and prizes in books to the val^ 4s., 3s., 2s., and Is., to those coming next in oflfe on the W The following gentlemen were appointed examiners for the various divisions next year, to serve as usual for South Cardiganshire should the arrangements continue. Senior division: Rev. D. K. Williams, Salem. Aberystwyth: Second division, Rev T. M. Jones, Ysbytty. Third division, Rev Isaac Joel, Gosen, Rhydyfelin; fourth and fifth divisions, Mr Joseph Morgan C.M Aberffrwd. The usual arrangements were made in regard to the examinations, in respect to questions, centres, superintendents, and other points relating to the conduct of the examination. The following portions of Scripture were chosen to be learnt by heart, and certificates will be awarded to those learning them as follows. First class, John I-YIII, and Proverbs, XI-XV. Second class, John I-VIII. Third class, John I-IV. The following teachers were appointed to examine the children in the Catechisms, in the various districts. Aberystwyth district Messrs Ll. The Executive Committee is to consist as usual of the Chairman and Secretaries of the various districts, with two other representatives from each district, together with the officers of the annual meeting. Candidates who have passed the highest division of the county examination were urged to prepare for the Connexional Examination next April, for which a gold, silver and bronze medals are given by the General Assembly, the subjects being, (1) John I-VIII., and (2) the Christian Instructor, Chapter X, and prizes in books to the value of 15s 10s and 5s will be awarded to those from North Cardigan who come highest on the list of success- ful candidates?, unless they gain the medals, when these "ill be given to the next in order of merit. The portion of scripture chosen to be studied in the following year was John IX-XXI, and this will also be one of the portions to learnt by heart for that year, viz 1901-2. The names of the successful candidates in the examinations in music in the various districts are to be incorporated with the general report, but the lists must be "ent to the secretaries on or before June 30th.. and the various districts were urged to continue to unite in bringing out a uniform pro- gramme for the ensuing year, and the hope was expressed that the districts which have not yet united will do so this year at any rate, especially in view of the General Assembly which will be held in Aberystwyth in May next year. The secretaries were authorised to get the usual cards containing the work for the ensuing year, printed and sent to the schools as soon as possible. The second conference began at 115 p.m. when the reports of those who had visited and examined the schools in the various districts were given. Aberystwyth District: Messrs J. Thomas, Gosen, and Superintendent Phillips, Shiloh, Aberystwyth; Tabor District: Messrs E. Davies, Rhydlwyd, Lledrod, and John Ellis, Bethel; Penllwyn District: Messrs J. Parry. Tyllwyd, Penllwyn, and T. Jones, Llwyn, Cwmerfin Garn District: Mr Davies, Graig, and Mr Beynon, Soar,-Borth. The various district* were urged to see that the visitation to the schools should combine, an inspection of the general work and organization, as well as catechising the schools in the prepared questions set for the upper sections. The General Superintendent, Rev D. Morgan, Penllwyn, was asked to combine the reports given, and prepare them for publication in one geneial report. The annual statistics were read by Mr J. Barclay Jenkins, which showed that the number of schools was 82, teachers 736, scholars 6,525, total 7,892. Average attendance 4.533, number of verses learnt 60,4736. Penllwyn, gave his annual report as general superintendent, and was afterwards re-elected for another year. Resolutions were passed urging the schools to be faithful to the temperance cause, and especially to patronize the temperance festival in Aberystwyth, June 6th. Also resolutions were agreed to, to send petitions to the House of Commons asking the Government to give facilities for the following three bills, which have already passed their second reading, to become law: (1) Mr Souttar's Bill forbidding the sale of intoxicating liquors to children under the age of 16 years; (2) Mr Spicer's Bill extending the provisions of the Welsh Sunday Closing Act to the county of Monmouth, and (3) Mr Herbert Roberts' Bill, amending the Welsh Sunday Closing Act. At three o'clock the conference adjourned to Soar Cuapel as the children were catechised in Libanus Chapel in lesson 30 to 40 of the 4th standard book by John Edwards, Penllwyn, and an address .vas given to them afterwards by the Rev. H. Davies, Penuerdd Maelor. In Soar Chapel a very lucid and interesting paper was read by Mr John Morgan, Bont, Penterwyd, on How to get a revival in connection with Sunday School work," and an able end practical address on the same subject was delivered by the Rev. D. R. Williams, Salem. Both gentlemen were cordially thanked for their addresses, and after some discussion the following resolution was unanimously agreed to, That we urge the various schools in the district to make strenuous efforts to get all the members of the churches and congregations to be faithful and constant members of the schools, and that special arrangements be made to visit absentees and en- deavour to bring new members into the schools in each place." It was also decided in order to lay special stress on the work of the Sunday school in the new century that a special conference be held in con- nection wiih the annual meeting next year, and that each district was urged to hold a similar con- ference, as was done in 1885, at the time of the centenary celebration of the Welsh Sunday Schools. The arrangements for these conferences were left to the Executive. The churches were asked to arrange for special references to the work of the Sunday schools on the two Sundays appointed for that purpose, viz., September 30th, 1900, and April 25th, 1901. The results of the annual examination and the reports of the examiners were then read as pub- lished below, and cordial votes of thanks were accorded to the examiners for their arduous and faithful services, as well as to the friends at Lib- anus for their kindness and hospitality to the large number ot representatives entertained by them. It was decided to send reports of the meetings to the papers as usual, and announce that the next annual meeting will be held in the Aberyst- wyth district, the time and place to be made known again. Thus a very successful meeting was brought to a close, and the representatives departed full of zeal and enthusiasm for another year's work. In the evening the adults were catechised by Mr Evan Evans, solicitor, Aberystwyth, in the first chapter of the General Epistle of James, and the meeting was greatly enjoyed, The silver medals given this year were given by Mr Evan Evans, solicitor, Aberystwyth, and Mr D. Samuel, M.A., County School, Aberystwyth, and the bronze medal by the Rev William Morgan, Garn. The gold medal is given by joint subscrip- tions collected by the Secretary, Mr T. Owens, Aberystwyth. Dolgelley Sunday School Festival. MORNING MEETING. The annual Sunday school festival of the Calvin- istic Methodists^f the district was held at Dol- gelley on Mond.4". The large number that attend- ed from the various schools testified that the Sunday schools of the district are still enthusiastic in their zeal for the Gymanfa." In the morning two meetings were held at the same hour. At Bethel, in the absence of Mr John Evans, Llwyngwril, through illness, the Rev. E. Vaughan Humphreys! Llwyngwril, presided. Four young ladies from Rehoboth school recited the first chapter of the epistle to St. James in an excellent manner, and Mr W. G. Jones, Goleuad office, catechised the two middle classes in the contents of 1 Samuel 1-10, and the answers were far excelling anything heard from this class for many years. The names of those who had committed St. James' epistle to memory were then called by the Secretary (Mr D. Caradog Evans), and distributed by the Rev. John Williams. EVENING MEETING. The evening meeting was devoted almost entirely to music. J. Meyrick Jones, Esq., presided in his usual able manner. The meeting was commenced with reciting the Ten Commandments by the whole congregation, and Mr. John Jones, Rhiwspardyn, offered prayer. The Chairman then in a brief address referred to the great losses Wales had during the year by deaths, and then called upon the musical conductor, Mr. Robert Davies, Dol- gelley, to take charge of the meeting. The follow- ing tunes were then sungLudwig, Ascalon, Tre- lalas, Y Wlad Well, Tydvil, Glancerri, Ystwyth, Trecastell, Llanddowror, Adgyfodiad, Eirinwg, Balducci, and Regent's Square; and the part-song, "Enaid Cu." The singing was worthy of great praise, Mr. Davies conducting in his usual fine and artistic manner, devoid of all pompness, and we felt that we were at a festival where the training work had been done beforehand, and not a rehearsal festival. The conductor and the musicians seemed to have had the secrets of the hymns and tunes revealed to them. During the meeting the Rev John Williams, B.A., proposed a resolution in favour of the Temper- ance bills now before Parliament and the Rev E. Jones Edwards seconded, and it was passed unanimously. The Chairman expressed his sorrow that Mr D. Caradog Evans, the secretary, was going to leave the district, and referred to the great work done by him during the past, and said that the great loss they suffered would be a great gain to the district he was leaving for.
