Notes from South Wales. (From our Special Correspondent.) Undoubtedly. It is undisputable that the bi-hngual LONDON WELSHMAN has a considerably larger circulation than had the purely Welsh Celt Llundain which it superseded."—Reynolds's Newspaper. A South Wales Suggestion. "The chief proprietor of Comic Cuts has been made a Baron. How would Baron Comic Cuts do ? "—Pontypridd Observer. Pathetic Tale of the Sea. A few days ago, fishermen arrived at New- port, Mon., Docks, with apathetic message from the sea. Off the Lizard they found a lifebuoy marked Aqua," and it supported the dead body of a sailor. The Aqua" is a steamer which has evidently foundered. Cosmopolitan Cardiff. A Chinese laundry was lately opened in a populous ward of Cardiff. The proprietor's name, which appears above the door, is Low Sang Lee. Mr. Evan Roberts' Photo. It is interesting to note that Mr. Evan Roberts, the Welsh Revivalist, has allowed his portrait to be taken for a charity-the Treborth Home for Friendless Girls at Cardiff-and, in order that the same may realise substantial results, Mr. Roberts has agreed to decline all future requests for sittings from professional photo- graphers. Sir William Preece. I notice that Sir William Preece, who is a Welshman, whilst distributing the prizes at the Northampton Institute, the other day, said Perhaps the Principal will take an example from the New Zealanders, and open a class for the study of football." Of course, that was before the Welshmen's victory over the Colonials, and I now wonder what Sir William thought of Gwalia's notable victory. British Rainfall. It is a curious fact that the Aberystwyth district seems to be the only exception, so far as the Principality is concerned, where there is no serious deficiency apparent in the rainfall, as there is in the great bulk of the British Isles. Up to the end of September, Aberystwyth's rainfall was 6 per cent. above the average, whilst Cardiff's was I9 per cent. below, Haverfordwest 10 per cent. ditto, and Llandudno 14 per cent. ditto. In September alone, there was a marked deficiency of rain throughout the Principality. Quaint. When I used to live in a small and ancient town in Mid-Wales, I remember the town crier proclaiming the advent of Christmastide with some Welsh lines. The custom is now obsolete, however. I was reminded of the fact when

SOUTH WALES BUSINESS NOTES. [117 this column it is our intention to bring before the notice of our numerous readers the features of various businesses calculated to prove of use and assistance to them. Proprietors of shops, hotels, &fc., desirous of such publicity should comnmnicate with us.] To MINISTERS, SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPERIN- TENDENTS, &c.—Magnificent Stock of Presenta- tion Books, &c., for sale.—Scholastic Trading Co., 37, St. Mary Street, Cardiff. RUPTURE.-The Steelless Easifit Truss is most comfortable. Send for particulars. Allen Pearce, Surgical Appliance Maker, 23, Charles Street, Cardiff. reading this week in an English journal, that at midnight on December ist last, the town crier at Colchester proclaimed winter by crying the following 0 Cold December has set in Poor men's coats are very thin. The trees are bare, the birds are cute; Hot pot and toast would well suit. Merthyr Ethical Society. The Christmas services of this Society on Sunday were taken by Mr. Philip Thomas, of Battersea, London. In the Merthyr Express Mr. Thomas is described as "always a favourite speaker, he being fluent, talented, and of deep and original thought." An Excellent Suggestion. At the recent distribution of prizes at the Swansea Grammar School the Mayor of the town suggested that the management of various industrial works should set a room apart where the men could meet and have lectures just for one hour daily. This, his worship rightly main- tained, would be productive of much good. In Wales they would have the finest mechanical engineers in the world if they were only helped a little in this direction. Evan Roberts's Englyn. Considerable interest has been aroused in Wales in reference to Mr. Evan Roberts's Englyn. Here it is :— Ar fyr yn bybyr y bo--cei cwnau, Y Cabinet fllamio A Lloyd-George," medd ei wlad o--cymeriad Heb ball I'W gariad—Pwy eill ei guro Welshmen in South Africa. Welshmen in Johannesburg evidently take keen intercst in everything that takes place in "Yr Hen Wlad." For instance, the flourishing Cambrian Society in the town sent the following telegram to Cardiff after the result of the Wales v. New Zealand match was known Llongy- farchiad calonog i'r chwareuwyr beldroed Cymreig ar y fuddugoliaeth ardderchog." Good Advice. Avoid vice in every form and shape, and you will never know what misery is. Be practicable, and you will always earn your bread and cheese. Bend your will to that of your masters, or parents, or friends, and you will always live in peace. Be good citizens. That is, learn to act with other men. Strive to learn what are the needs of the age in which you live, and be useful in your generation."—Rev. D. Edwards, of Llangeitho, at the Tregaron County School Prize Distribution. The Coming Election. Interest in the forthcoming Parliamentary election is growing, and tons of election litera- ture, &c., will soon be flooding the land. Here is rather a good song with a swinging chorus :— "D'YE KEN BOB PEEL?" Oh, we ken Bob Peel of the good old day, And we ken J. C. with his pay, pay, pay, For we find ourselves in the Free Trade fray With a tax on the loaf in the morning. Chorus. He'll tax us in meat. and he'll tax us in bread, And he says that he'll give us a pension instead, But pension will come when we're all of us dead From the tax on the loaf in the morning Welsh in Cardiff Schools. The Cardiff Education Committee have now decided to appoint a number of peripatetic teachers of Welsh at the elementary schools of the city. Great care will be taken in appointing experts. As the Lord Mayor very appropriately remarked at the Education Committee meeting They did not want to appoint any Die Shon Dafyddion." This experiment of teaching Welsh, which, by the way, will not affect certain arrangements already in vogue for teaching the ZD language at some of the schools, will be watched with much interest. Tregaron. I believe there are dozens of Tregaron people resident in London, and I am sure that they will peruse with keen interest the following topical lines, which were sung by one of the students in the recent Christmas Holiday entertainment at the local county school. I think they are capitally written Mae'r pantydd a'r dolydd o amgylch Pont Eynon, A'r hen gorsydd duon yn anwyl i mi, Ac nid oes 'run cartref o eiddo plant dynion Na ph'lasau claerwynion mor uchel eu bri. Os estron y crwydraf yn mhell o Dregaron Dychwela fy nghalon at Bren;g o hyd, 'Does bryn bach, mi fentra, yn well 11a Pen Picca, Na'r un parc mi goelia yn decach ei fryd. Mae'r pysgod yn pesgu yn ngwaelod hen Deifi, A'r hwyaid yn nythu yn mron y Gors Goch Mae'n well gen i glywed y petrus yn canu Na chorau y trefi sy'n gwaeddu yn groch. Tra chwyddir y stori am 'rhen Dwm Shon Catti, Tra saif Pant-y-beudy yn union 'run man, Mi gofiaf am Brenig a'i phont yn arbenig A'r pentref bach unig a saif ar ei glan.
